Abstract

The present invention relates to an improved method for producing microcrystalline cellulose from oil palm stalk fibres (OPSF). The method preferably comprises the steps of subjecting the OPSF to a treatment with pressurized steam of an increasing flow rate (100); hydrolyzing the steam- treated OPSF using a mixture of food grade acetic acid and nitric acid by heating the steam-treated OPSF with the mixture in an oil bath at a predetermined temperature to remove lignin and hemicelluloses from the steam-treated OPSF to produce cellulose fibres (200); subjecting the cellulose fibres to a purification treatment with an alkaline solution to produce alpha cellulose fibres (300); and hydrolyzing and dissolving amorphous regions of the alpha cellulose fibres using sulfuric acid to produce MCC (400).
