Abstract

A biological wastewater treatment system for ammonia removal which comprises at least one microbial reactor having a mixture of bacteria, characterized in that the mixture of bacteria comprises at least one first bacterium selected from the genus Ochrobactrum; and at least one second bacterium selected from the genus Bacillus, such that the bacteria act synergistically to utilise ammonia through nitrification. The present invention also provides a method of treating wastewater biologically for ammonia removal characterized in that the wastewater is subjected to microbial processing by the mixture of bacteria, comprising the steps of introducing the mixture of bacteria to a microbial reactor; passing through the wastewater to allow bacteria growth; treating wastewater by the mixture of bacteria utilising ammonia through nitrification; and controlling retention time to achieve a desired percentage of ammonia removal.
