Abstract

Disclosed are systems and methods for monitoring drilling fluids in real time. One method includes circulating a drilling fluid (422) into and out of a borehole (416), generating a first output signal (444a) with a first optical computing device (440a) arranged near an outlet of the borehole (416), the first optical computing device (440a) having a first integrated computational element configured to optically interact with the drilling fluid (422), receiving the first output signal ( 444a) with a signal processor (234, 442) communicably coupled to the first optical computing device (440a), determining the concentration of a gas present in the drilling fluid (422) at the outlet of the borehole (416) with the signal processor (234, 442) and generating a resulting output signal (234, 442), conveying the resulting output signal (234, 442) to one or more peripheral devices (448), and adjusting one or more drilling or completion parameters in response to the concentration of the gas present in the drilling fluid (442).
