Abstract

The present invention discloses a method for beneficiating raw bentonite to improve its rheological and filtration properties for well applications, particularly as a drilling fluid. Said beneficiation method comprising the steps of: drying the raw bentonite to moisture content less than 10%; providing the dried raw bentonite in a powder form; removing gauge minerals from said bentonite powder; and treating said substantially gauge minerals-free bentonite powder with a predetermined amount of hydroxide of monovalent cation solution having a pH value ranging from 8 to 9, wherein said gauge minerals-free bentonite powder in the form of aqueous suspension.
