Abstract

DISCLOSED IS AN ALUMINUM ALLOY SUBSTRATE FOR MAGNETIC DISKS WHICH CONTAINS MG IN A CONTENT OF 3.5 PERCENT BY MASS OR MORE AND 6 PERCENT BY MASS OR LESS, WITH THE REMAINDER INCLUDING AL AND INEVITABLE IMPURITIES AND HAS A CHANGE IN FLATNESS OF 5 µM OR LESS AND A CHANGE IN AVERAGE GRAIN SIZE OF 10 µM OR LESS EACH BETWEEN BEFORE AND AFTER BEING HEATED AT 500°C FOR 10 SECONDS. THE ALUMINUM ALLOY SUBSTRATE FOR MAGNETIC DISKS MAY BE MANUFACTURED BY PERFORMING STACK ANNEALING OF AN ALUMINUM ALLOY SUBSTRATE HAVING THE ABOVE-SPECIFIED COMPOSITION BY HEATING TO A TEMPERATURE OF 350° C OR HIGHER AT A RATE OF TEMPERATURE RISE OF 2°C/MIN OR LESS, HOLDING AT A TEMPERATURE OF 350°C OR HIGHER FOR 2 HOURS OR LONGER, AND COOLING AT A RATE OF TEMPERATURE FALL OF 2°C/MIN OR LESS.
