AN OPTICAL DEMULTIPLEXER (20) HAVING AN INPUT PORT (22) CONNECTED TO THE TRANSMIT PATH (12) FOR RECEIVING THE OPTICAL SIGNALS TO ENABLE THE OPTICAL DEMULTIPLEXER (20) TO SEGREGATE THE OPTICAL SIGNALS INTO DATA SIGNALS OUTPUT FROM AN FIRST OUTPUT PORT (24) AND OSC SIGNALS OUTPUT FROM AN SECOND OUTPUT PORT (26). AN ERBIUM DOPED FIBER AMPLIFIER (EDFA) (30) CONNECTED TO THE FIRST OUTPUT PORT (24) OF THE OPTICAL DEMULTIPLEXER (20) FOR AMPLIFYING THE DATA SIGNALS. A SEMICONDUCTOR OPTICAL AMPLIFIER (40) CONNECTED TO THE SECOND OUTPUT PORT (26) OF THE OPTICAL DEMULTIPLEXER (20) FOR AMPLIFYING THE OSC SIGNALS. AN OPTICAL MULTIPLEXER (50) HAVING A FIRST INPUT PORT (52) CONNECTED TO THE EDFA (30) FOR RECEIVING THE AMPLIFIED DATA SIGNALS AND A SECOND INPUT PORT (54) CONNECTED TO THE SEMICONDUCTOR OPTICAL AMPLIFIER (40) FOR RECEIVING THE AMPLIFIED OSP SIGNALS TO ENABLE THE OPTICAL MULTIPLEXER (50) TO COMBINE THE AMPLIFIED DATA SIGNALS AND THE AMPLIFIED OSC SIGNALS INTO AMPLIFIED OPTICAL SIGNALS OUTPUT FROM AN OUTPUT PORT (56) TO A RECEIVE PATH (58).
