(AREA)
Abstract
THE PRESENT INVENTION RELATES TO THE USE OF A COMPOSITION COMPRISING AN OIL WITH A HIGH CONTENT OF ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS OF OMEGA3 AND OMEGA6 TYPE, PREFERABLY FROM HYLOCEREUS UNDATUS AND HYLOCEREUS P0LYRHIZUS. THESE ARE TWO VARIETIES WHICH ARE COMMONLY KNOWN AS PITAVA OR DRAGON FRUIT. ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS, NAMELY, LINOLEIC AND LINOLENIC FORM THE SIGNIFICANT PERCENTAGE OF THE UNSATURATED FATTY ACIDS OF THE SEED OIL EXTRACT. ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS ARE IMPORTANT ACIDS THAT ARE NECESSARY SUBSTRATES IN ANIMAL METABOLISM AND CANNOT BE INSITU-SYNTHESISED. BOTH PITAYA VARIETIES CONTAIN ABOUT 50% ESSENTIAL (C18:2 (48%) AND C18:3 (1.5%)) FATTY ACIDS. FURTHERMORE, THE FATTY ACIDS OBTAINED HAVING THE MEANS TO BE FUNCTIONAL IN A FOOD, BEVERAGE OR PHARMACEUTICAL COMPOSITION.
