Abstract
ARTIFICIAL SEEDS OF CACTUS (ECHINOCEREUS SP) WAS DEVELOPED FROM VARIOUS VEGETATIVE OR SOMATIC TISSUES OF THIS SPECIES. SMALL PIECES OF TISSUES WERE INOCULATED ONTO TISSUE CULTURE MEDIA TO INITIATE CULTURES. DUE TO MANIPULATION OF SPECIFIC HORMONES AND THEIR PRECISE CONCENTRATIONS, EMBRYOGENIC CALLUS WILL FORM WHICH WILL GIVE RISE TO DIFFERENT STAGES OF SOMATIC EMBRYOS, SUCH AS GLOBULAR, HEART SHAPED, TORPEDO AND COTYLEDONARY STAGE. THESE SOMATIC EMBRYOS WILL THEN BE ENCAPSULATED IN SODIUM ALGINATE, CALCIUM CHLORIDE, MS MEDIA AND OTHER SUBSTANCES WHICH WILL RESULT IN BEAD FORMATION CONSISTING OF PROPAGULES AND ARTIFICIAL ENDOSPERMS. APART FROM SOMATIC EMBRYOS, MICROSHOOTS CAN ALSO BE ALTERNATIVE PROPAGULES FOR SYNTHETIC SEEDS PRODUCTION.
