A METHOD (100) FOR ALLOWING A TRANSMITTING MOBILE STATION TO INITIATE A DIRECT MODE OPERATION TO A RECEIVING MOBILE STATION OVER WIMAX UTILIZING CONFIGURATION OF A MEDIUM ACCESS CONTROL (MAC), THE METHOD COMPRISING THE STEPS OF ENABLING THE DIRECT MODE OPERATION ON THE TRANSMITTING MOBILE STATION AND THE RECEIVING MOBILE STATION WITHIN THE WIRELESS NETWORK (102), SYNCHRONIZING THE MOBILE STATION IN THE DIRECT MODE OPERATION (104), INITIATING A TRANSMISSION SESSION FOR AN INDIVIDUAL CALL TRANSMISSION OR A GROUP CALL TRANSMISSION IN THE DIRECT MODE OPERATION (106) AND EXECUTING DIRECT MODE TRANSMISSION ON THE INDIVIDUAL CALL TRANSMISSION OR THE GROUP CALL TRANSMISSION (108).
