THE ALUMINUM ALLOY SUBSTRATE FOR MAGNETIC DISKS IS PRODUCED BY CASTING A MELT OF AN ALUMINUM ALLOY CONTAINING 3.5 TO 15BY MASS OF MG, 0.01 TO 0.1BY MASS OF SI AND FE, RESPECTIVELY, 10 0.02 TO 0.35BY MASS OF CR, AND FURTHER AT LEAST ONE KIND OF CU AND ZN IN A PRESCRIBED CONTENT INTO A PLATE MATERIAL BY A THIN PLATE CONTINUOUS CASTING METHOD; PUNCHING THE PLATE MATERIAL INTO A CIRCULAR SHAPE; PRESSURE ANNEALING THE PUNCHED PLATE MATERIAL AT THE HIGHER TEMPERATURE OR MORE BETWEEN 3000C 15 AND (14.7 X (MG] + 204) OC ( [MG) : THE CONTENT OF MG (BY MASS) IN THE ALUMINUM ALLOY) ; AND THEREAFTER COOLING AT A PRESCRIBED RATE OR HIGHER TO PLANARIZE, WHEREIN A MAXIMUM LENGTH OF AN AL-FG BASED INTERMETALLIC COMPOUND ON THE SURFACE IS 7 PM OR SHORTER; A MAXIMUM LENGTH OF A MG-SI BASED INTERMETALLIC COMPOUND ON THE 20 SURFACE IS 4 PM OR SHORTER; AND THE SURFACE AREA RATIO OF A13M92 PHASE IS 1OR LOWER.
