THE INVENTION RELATES TO A CATALYST COMPRISING A POROUS SUPPORT WHICH HAS VOIDS OPEN ON AT LEAST ONE SIDE, WITH THE OPENING HAVING A DIAMETER OF FROM ABOUT 0.7 TO ABOUT 20 NM ALONG AT LEAST ONE DIMENSION, AND HAS A SPECIFIC SURFACE AREA OF AT LEAST 500 M²/G, AND HAVING A LOADING WITH AT LEAST ONE CATALYTICALLY ACTIVE METAL COMPONENT OF AT LEAST 2.5 M² PER GRAM OF CATALYST. THE INVENTION FURTHER RELATES TO A PROCESS FOR PREPARING SUCH A CATALYST AND ITS USE IN THE SYNTHESIS OF METHANOL OR AS REFORMER IN FUEL CELL TECHNOLOGY.
