Abstract

A METHOD AND KIT FOR ASSAYING HEAVY METALS FOR A SAMPLE SOLUTION SUSPECTED OF CONTAINING HEAVY METALS IS DISCLOSED. THE METHOD COMPRISES THE STEPS OF INCUBATING THE SAMPLE WITH ENZYME PAPAIN FOR A PREDETERMINED PERIOD OF TIME AT ROOM TEMPERATURE. THIS IS FOLLOWED BY ADDING THE SUBSTRATE, CASEIN, WHEREIN THE MIXTURE IS INCUBATED FOR A PREDETERMINED PERIOD OF TIME AT A PREDETERMINED TEMPERATURE. THIS REACTION IS STOPPED BY ADDING REAGENT COOMASSIE BRILLIANT BLUE G-250 WHICH ALSO ACTS AS A CHROMOPHORE AND THE EXTENT OF THE CHROMOPHORE FORMATION IS THEN PHOTOMETRICALLY DETERMINED. THE ABSORBANCE OF THE RESULTING CHROMOPHORE REFLECTS THE CONCENTRATION OF HEAVY METALS IN THE SAMPLE.
