Abstract

A MOBILE RADIO CAPABLE OF AUTOMATICALLY SELECTING THE BEST FREQUENCY TO RECEIVE A BROADCAST RADIO SIGNAL. THE RADIO HAS A PAIR OF TUNERS (3, 4), MEANS FOR TUNING A FIRST OF THE TUNERS (THE ACTIVE TUNER) TO A SELECTED SIGNAL, AND SWITCHING MEANS (5) CONNECTING THE ACTIVE TUNER TO AN AUDIO OUTPUT. THERE IS MEANS (1, 2) FOR MONITORING THE STRENGTH OF THE RADIO SIGNAL RECEIVED BY THE ACTIVE TUNER, AND MEANS (2) FOR ACTIVATING THE IDLE TUNER WHEN THE STRENGTH OF THE RADIO SIGNAL RECEIVED BY THE FIRST TUNER DROPS BELOW A PREDETERMINED THRESHOLD VALUE. THE SECOND TUNER HAS MEANS FOR AUTOMATICALLY SCANNING RADIO FREQUENCIES FOR THE SAME SIGNAL BROADCAST AT A DIFFERENT FREQUENCY. THE RADIO FURTHER INCLUDES MEANS FOR MONITORING THE STRENGTH OF THE SIGNAL DETECTED BY THE SECOND TUNER AND MEANS (2) FOR CONTROLLING SAID SWITCHING MEANS (5) SO THAT IT RECEIVES A SIGNAL FROM SAID SECOND TUNER IN PLACE OF A SIGNAL FROM SAID FIRST TUNER IF THE SIGNAL RECEIVED BY THE SECOND TUNER HAS A SIGNAL STRENGTH GREATER THAN THE PREDETERMINED THRESHOLD.
