Abstract

THE PRESENT INVENTION RELATES TO METHODS OF MEASURING TRANSPARENCY OR CLARITY OF MATERIALS AND APPARATUS THEREFOR. A LIGHT SOURCE (1) WHICH PRODUCES A COLLIMATED BEAM OF LIGHT (3) CAN BE REDUCED IN INTENSITY USING AN OPTIONAL ATTENUATION MEANS (2), THIS BEING NECESSARY IF THE SPECIMENS ALLOW ENOUGH LIGHT THROUGH TO OVERLOAD THE PHOTO-DETECTOR (9). THE COLLIMATED BEAM (3) IMPINGES UPON A SPECIMEN (7) SUBSTANTIALLY AT RIGHT ANGLES TO THE BEAM (3), AND IN PASSING THROUGH IT, DIVERGES INTO A WIDER BEAM (4) THE LIGHT EMERGING FROM THE SPECIMEN IS ARRANGED TO FALL ONTO A PHOTO-DETECTOR (9) AFTER PASSING THROUGH AN APERTURE (8). THIS APERTURE (8) CAN BE MADE SMALL TO MEASURE THE MAXIMUM LIGHT INTENSITY AT THE OF THE AXIS OF THE BEAM (3) AND LARGER TO MEASURE THE TOTAL OR SEMI-TOTAL LIGHT INTENSITY OF THE LIGHT (6) EMERGING FROM THE SPECIMEN (7).
