IN A SHELF MAIN BODY (2) OF A REAR PARCEL SHELF (1) OF A MOTOR VEHICLE COMPARTMENT, THERE ARE FORMED A PLURALITY OF DENTED PORTIONS (41-45) WHICH EXTEND IN THE LONGITUDINAL DIRECTION OF THE MOTOR VEHICLE. THE RIGIDITY IN THE LONGITUDINAL DIRECTION OF THE REAR PARCEL SHELF IS THUS SECURED. IN THE FRONT EDGE OF THE SHELF MAIN BODY (2) THERE IS FORMED A STEPPED PORTION (5) HAVING A STEPPED CROSS SECTION WITH ITS FRONT SIDE LOWERED IN ELEVATION. PART (41, 42, 44) OF THE DENTED PORTIONS ARE EXTENDED DOWN TO AND THROUGHOUT THE LOWER STEP PART (5A) OF THE STEPPED PORTION (5). THE RIGIDITY OF THE STEPPED PORTION (5) IS THUS SECURED. BY THE STEPPED PORTION (5) THE BENDING RIGIDITY OF THE FRONT EDGE PORTION IN THE LATERAL DIRECTION IS SECURED. IN THIS MANNER, A FRONT STIFFENER AND A CENTRAL STIFFENER THAT ARE CONVENTIONALLY COUPLED TO THE BOTTOM SURFACE OF THE SHELF MAIN BODY HAVE BEEN OMITTED, RESULTING IN REDUCTION IN WEIGHT AND COST OF THE REAR PARCEL SHELF.
