A MEROZOITE SURFACE ANTIGEN OF PLASMODIUM FALCIPARUM SELECTED FROM THE CLASS CHARACTERISED BY:(I) HAVING A RELATIVE MOLECULAR MASS, MR, (DETERMINED BY SDS-POLYAERYLAMIDE GEL ELECTROPHORESIS)IN THE RANGE OF APPROXIMATELY 41,000 TO 53,000: AND (II) COMPRISING MULTIPLE ALLELIC FORMS OF MSA2, HAVING CONSERVED N-TERMINAL AND C-TERMINAL SEQUENCES:OR AN ANTIGENIC FRAGMENT THEREOF. PARTICULAR ANTIGENIC FRAGMENTS INCLUDE SEQUENCE CORRESPONDING TO REPEAT SEQUENCES AND SEQUENCES FROM CONSERVED N-TERMINAL AND C-TERMINAL REGIONS. PRODUCTION OF ANTIGENS BY RECOMBINANT DNA TECHNIQUES-AS FUSION AND NON-FUSION PROTEINS, AND USE IN VACCINE COMPOSITIONS IS ALSO DISCLOSED.
