Abstract

IN RECORDING AND/OR PLAYBACK EQUIPMENT THAT READS DATA FROM AN OPTICAL RECORDED MEDIUM, A DISK FOR EXAMPLE, BY THE SINGLE-BEAM METHOD, THE WHOLE OPTICAL PICK-UP IS SHIFTED IN ORDER TO POSITION THE BEAM OF LIGHT ALONG THE DISK''S DATA-STORAGE TRACKS. FINE ADJUSTMENT BY SIMPLY MOVING THE PARALLEL RADIALLY AS IN THE THREE-BEAM METHOD IS IMPOSSIBLE BECAUSE THE SPOT OF LIGHT ON TWO-PART PHOTODETECTOR IMITATES THE MOTION, CAUSING AN OFFSET IN THE TRACKING-ERROR SIGNAL TE. TO ALLOW FINE ADJUSTMENT WITH THE OBJECTIVE LENS, THE BEAM (L) OF LIGHT THAT SCANS THE DATA IS MOVED BY A FINE-ADJUSTMENT MECHANISM ALONG A DIRECTION (W) AT AN ANGLE (ALPHA) TO THE NORMAL ( ) TO THE DATA-STORAGE TRACK. THE DISK REFLECTS THE BEAM ONTO A PHOTODETECTOR COMPRISING SEVERAL PHOTODIODES (A, B, C & D). THE TRACKING-ERROR SIGNAL TE IS OBTAINED FROM THE SIGNALS (AS, BS, CS & DS) EMITTED BY THE DIODES BY WEIGHTED CONSTRUCTION OF SUMS AND DIFFERENCES. COMPACT-DISK PLAYERS, MAGNETO-OPTICAL RECORDING AND PLAYBACK EQUIPMENT, VIDEODISC PLAYERS, AND DRAW-DISK PLAYERS.(FIG. 7)
