Abstract

FRACTIONATION OR CRYSTALLIZATION OF PALM FATTY ACID DISTILLATE (PFAD) IN SUITABLE SOLVENTS ALLOW FOR A PRE-CONCENTRATION OF VITAMIN E IN A LIQUID PFAD FRACTION WHILE ABOUT 40-70% OF FATTY ACIDS (MAINLY PALMITIC ACID) COULD BE CRYSTALLIZED OUT. THE LIQUID PFAD FRACTION COULD BE PROCESSED FOR THE RECOVERY OF VITAMIN E CONCENTRATE VIA ABSORPTION SUCH AS ON REVERSED PHASE C18 BONDED SILICA GEL ADSORBENT. BY USING SUITABLE SOLVENT COMBINATIONS, E.G. MEOH; H2O; ACOH (90; 10; 0.25) POLAR IMPURITIES AND MORE FATTY ACIDS COULD BE REMOVED LEAVING MOST OF THE VITAMIN E TRAPPED IN THE ADSORBENT. A VITAMIN E CONCENTRATE OF ABOUT 16% PURITY COULD THEN BE RECOVERED FROM THE ADSORBENT BY EXTRACTING WITH SUITABLE SOLVENTS OR SOLVENT MIXTURES (E.G. ETOH, MEOH). THE OVERALL VITAMIN E RECOVERY FROM PFAD WAS FOUND TO BE ABOUT 75% BY-PRODUCTS OF THE PROCESS INCLUDE SQUALENE CONCENTRATE (56% PURITY) AND PURIFIED FATTY ACID FRACTIONS.
