Description

BOTTLE CLOSURE CONTAINING A PRIZE This invention relates to promotional closures for containers, and more particularly, to promotional closures that have a removable internal compartment, to store promotional advertisements, and a promotional game system therein. Various types of container closures are known in the art, such as those used to seal soft drink bottles. One such commonly used closure is formed of plastic and includes a circular upper wall portion and an internally threaded hanging skirt portion which is threaded into an associated container. For an improved seal, many such closures may include a liner placed on the inner surface of the top wall. Examples of such closures and methods for manufacturing such closures are described in U.S. Patent Nos. 5,205,426 to McBride et al. and 4,497,765 to Wilde et al., incorporated herein by reference. Manufacturers and bottlers of soft drinks, currently use closures and linings for closures for promotional campaigns. Closures and linings for containers have been used as reimbursement pieces for price reduction or rebates, and as "bets or cocks", or REF .: 30257 pieces with a prize of a game, in many known promotional campaigns. In a typical promotional application, a logo or other representation for the reimbursement of a prize, such as a reward amount or prize item, is printed or transferred into a liner or closure lid. Such prize-winning pieces, however, must be reimbursed through the retail seller or directly through the manufacturer or bottler of the soft drink. Although this type of promotional campaign, for the most part, is effective and is well accepted by the consuming public, it does not provide the consumer with the excitement of being a winner in the place, immediately. In many promotional campaigns, it is desirable to provide the player, that is, the buyer of the soft drink, with instant gratification. As such, the promotional or gaming piece, by itself, must have a value, preferably in cash, or otherwise, be reimbursable immediately. In such a promotional campaign, it is more preferable to provide a lid for closure, which may contain or store the promotional piece within the lid. The promotional piece, however, should be protected against theft, and should also be insulated from the contents of the container. Where, for example, as part of the promotion, cash incentives are packaged at closing, the incentives must be packaged • within the closure to prevent theft, when the containers are stored on a shelf of a grocery market . Cash or other incentives should also be isolated from the contents of the container, that is, the soft drink, for sanitary reasons. In addition, such a closure should also be configured so that the promotional piece can be removed from the closure, without adversely affecting the ability of the closure to retain a seal with the container. In such a promotional campaign, it may also be desirable to provide a promotional piece without an incentive of cash, prompting the buyer to "please try again." Thus, a need continues for a promotional closure and a gaming system that provides the buyer immediate gratification, while allowing easy access and removal of the promotional advertisement before the associated recipient empties. It is also desirable that such a promotional closure be configured so that the removal of the game piece does not adversely affect the sealing capabilities of the closure. A removable, internal compartment promotional closure includes a plastic closure cap, which has an upper, circular wall portion, and a portion of annular skirt, hanging, hanging from the upper wall portion. A circular, elastic liner is placed on the lid, and has a first side adjacent the upper wall portion and a second side having a retention element extending therefrom. A removable compartment member is placed in the closure cap, which extends from, and adjacent to, the second side of the liner. The compartment member defines an interior compartment adapted to receive promotional advertisements therein. The compartment member includes a flange extending therefrom, which is configured to coact with the liner retainer, to retain the compartment member in place, in the lid, when the lid is coupled with a container associated. The compartment member is adapted to be released from the lid, after the lid is removed from the container. In a preferred embodiment, a sealed cover element extends over and closes the compartment member, to isolate the contents of the compartment from the contents of the container. The cover element may include an unsealed peripheral region, to facilitate removal and to provide access to the compartment. Alternatively, the compartment may be configured to separate or open, with the provision of one or, more preferably, more weakened regions. In one embodiment, the rim includes a circumferentially extending bifurcated region, which defines internal and external annular walls. The retention member includes a retention cord extending circumferentially from the liner, which is configured to be received between inner and outer annular walls. With the closure in place in the container, the container pushes the outer wall inward to engage the retaining cord to hold the compartment member in place in the lid. In another embodiment, the retaining element comprises at least one deformable projection hanging from the lining. The deformable projection is configured to be urged over the edge of the rim to hold the compartment member in place in the lid, when the lid is engaged with the container. In yet another embodiment of the invention, the liner includes a portion of annular bead, in a hanging skirt joint and upper wall portion. The retaining element is defined by a deformable portion of the annular bead, placed on a periphery of the rim, when the lid is coupled with the container.
The removable compartments can each include fastening members, such as wall extensions, pull rings, flanges and the like, to facilitate the removal of the respective compartments of the closures. The promotional closure can be used in conjunction with a simulated promotional closure, which includes a closure cap essentially identical to, and indistinguishable from the cap for promotional closure. The simulated closure includes a molded liner in place, positioned on the lid, having a first side adjacent to the upper wall portion. The liner includes a sealing ring portion, annular, to provide a seal between the closure and the container when the closure is engaged therein. The liner also includes a simulated, pendant promotional bag that does not seal, which has a shape similar to a sleeve. The bag opens to the container and is configured to simulate a promotional compartment. The bag can be provided with ads such as "please try again." A plurality of closures containing a simulated promotion and promotional closures in the respective containers will be provided. The closures are substantially indistinguishable from one another, when coupled with their respective containers, and when the containers are filled with a soft drink. Thus, buyers of the soft drink with the promotional closure, will be rewarded immediately, opening the container and the compartment, receiving the promotional piece (which can be a cash incentive), "on the spot". Those who buy the soft drink with the simulated promotional closure, will undoubtedly be disappointed, however, can be comforted by an announcement, such as "please try again", which appears in the closing. Other features and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following detailed description, the accompanying drawings and the appended claims. FIGURE 1 is a cross-sectional view of an exemplary closure, having a closure with a removable, internal promotional compartment embodying the principles of the present invention, the closure being illustrated with a portion of a container coupled thereto; FIGURE 2 is a cross-sectional view of an exemplary closure, having an alternate embodiment of the removable, internal promotional compartment; FIGURE 3 is an enlarged, cross-sectional view of the closure of FIGURE 2, illustrating the coupling of the removable internal compartment and the closure cap; FIGURE 3a is a fragmentary, cross-sectional view illustrating an alternative embodiment of the closure illustrated in FIGURE 3; FIGURE 4 is a cross-sectional view of an exemplary closure having another alternate embodiment of the removable, internal promotional compartment; FIGURE 5 is a cross-sectional view of an exemplary closure having a simulated promotional bag, in accordance with one aspect of the present invention; FIGURE 6 is a cross-sectional view of an exemplary closure having an internal, removable promotional compartment, similar to that illustrated in FIGURE 4, having an alternate configuration for a fastener to facilitate removal of the closure's promotional compartment; and FIGURE 7 is a cross-sectional view of the exemplary closure, and the removable, internal promotional compartment of FIGURE 6, with the promotional compartment having a dollar bill therein, and with the promotional compartment partially removed. of the closing. Although the present invention is susceptible to various forms of modalities, the presently preferred embodiments are shown and will be described herein, with the understanding that the present description should be considered as an exemplification of the invention, and is not intended to limit the invention to the specific embodiments illustrated. With reference now to FIGURE 1, an exemplary closure 10 is shown, having a modality of the internal, removable promotional compartment 12, placed therein. As illustrated, the closure 10 is generally cup-shaped, and includes a closure cap 14, an upper, circular wall portion 16, and a hanging annular skirt portion 18, which hangs from the upper wall portion 16. skirt portion 18 has an internal threaded formation 20, on the inner surface thereof, for threadably coupling a cooperative container C, to which the closure 10 is fitted. The ventilation slots 22, which extend axially to the along the interior of the skirt portion 18, they pass through the threaded formation 20. The ventilation slots 22, facilitate the release and ventilation of the gas, which can pressurize the container, when the container is used to store, for example, carbonated drinks. In a preferred embodiment, the closure 10 is formed with an anti-theft band 24, to provide discernible, visible evidence that the closure 10 has been partially or totally removed from the container C. The anti-theft band 24 is connected to the portion of skirt 18, by a plurality of brittle, fragile-like bridges 26, which extend between the inner surfaces of the skirt portion 18 and the anti-theft band 24. The anti-theft band 24 is, in other way, separate and it is distinguished from the skirt portion 18 by a circumferential cut line marked 28, which extends through the side wall of the closure 10 and partially into the fragile strips 26. The anti-theft band can be configured in accordance with the teachings US Pat. No. 4,938, 370 by McBride, and formed in conjunction with the compression molding of the closure, in accordance with the teachings of U.S. Patent No. 4,497,765 to Wilde et al., both patents which are commonly granted herein, and both patents which are incorporated herein by reference. In the exemplary closure 10, the anti-theft band 24 has a plurality of inwardly extending tabs 30. With the initial coupling of the closure 10 to the container C, the tabs 30 rotate in an upward fashion and pass over a security ring annular (not shown), of the container. The theft indication is provided in that, with the first removal of the closure 10 from the container C, the tabs 30 engage the security ring and provide sufficient strength, so that the anti-theft band 24 is separated from the skirt portion 18 in the line marked with cuts 28. In a current embodiment, as best seen in FIGURE 1, the closure 10 has a lip 32 extending up and inward of the closure 10, generally at the junction of the upper wall portion 16 and the skirt portion 18. The lip 32 extends circumferentially of the closure 10, and may be formed as a continuous element, or may be formed of discrete segments. A depression 34 may be formed between the lip 32 and the upper wall portion 16. A liner 36 may be formed in the closure 10, using an on-site molding process, such as that described in the aforementioned US Patent No. 4,497,765. , by ilde et al. Alternatively, the liner 36 may be of the insertable type, which is placed in the closure 10 after the lining 36 is formed. The liner 36 has a first side 38, which is placed adjacent to the upper wall portion 16. , and a second side 40, which extends into the closure 10. The liner 36 is preferably formed of a substantially opaque material, to prevent detection of the promotional compartment 12 and / or its contents. The liner 36 can be formed of a polyethylene material, of ethylvinyl acetate (EVA). However, other moldable, elastic, food grade plastic materials can be used. Such materials and their properties, are described in U.S. Patent No. 4,658,976 to Pohlenz. In the embodiment of closure 10 illustrated in FIGURE 1, the removable, internal promotional compartment 12, includes a generally cup-shaped body 42, which has a flange portion 50. The flange 50 is configured to engage a retaining element 44, which is defined by a portion of the liner 36. In the illustrated embodiment, the retention element 44 is defined by a cord-like portion 46 of the liner 36, which extends, in part, within "the recess 34 of the lid 14. When the closure 10 is mounted, the flange portion 50 is adjacent to, and in contact with the second side 40 of the liner 36. A cylindrical hanging wall 52, hangs from the rim portion 50 and defines the compartment 12. An end cap, circular 54, extends through the hanging wall 52, to enclose the compartment 12. The compartment 12 may also include, a wall extension 56, which provides a holding region to facilitate the removal of the compartment 12 d the closure 10. The compartment 12 preferably includes a sealed cover element 58, which extends through at least a portion of the flange 50, and seals the open end of the compartment 12 of the closure 10, and the contents of the container. C. The cover element 58 may be formed of a non-porous material, such as aluminum, an aluminum-polymer laminate structure or the like. The cover member may be sealed to the flange 50 by methods such as hot sealing, hot melt gluing and the like, such methods are recognized by those skilled in the art. The sealed area between the cover element 58 and the flange 50, may extend across the width of the flange 50, or through only a portion thereof, circumferentially sealing the compartment 12, and defining an unsealed peripheral region or removal region. 60, for securing and removing the cover element 58 from the compartment 12. In a preferred embodiment, the cover element 58 has a smaller diameter than the flange 50, so that the element 58 does not extend to the end of the flange, to avoid the contact between the cover element 58 and the contents of the container. Thus, the cover member 58, is encapsulated in the food grade liner 36, and the materials of the compartment 12. When the closure 10 is coupled with the container C, the flange 50 is positioned between the upper surface T of the finish of the container F and the liner 36. The rim 50 is of sufficient diameter to extend through the opening of the container C and butt-up with the retaining element 44. Since the closure 10 is tightly coupled with the container C, the retaining member 44 deforms to engage the rim 50, and retain the compartment 12 in place in the closure 10. With the compartment 12 in place in the closure, a small gap 62 is defined between the liner 36 and the sealed cover element 58. An alternate embodiment of the compartment 102 is illustrated in FIGURES 2 and 3. In this embodiment, the retaining element 104 of the closure liner 36, includes a deformable projection 106, which extends from the second side 40 of the liner 36. The deformable projection is placed inwardly of the cord portion of the liner 46. As in the embodiment of the compartment 12 of the FIGURE 1, the embodiment 102 of FIGURES 2 and 3, includes a rim portion 108, a cylindrical hanging wall 110 and an end cap 112. The rim portion extends through a portion of the top surface T of the finish of the container. The deformable projection 106 is configured to coact with the upper surface T, when the closure 10 is engaged with the container C and to deform inward to engage at least a portion of the edge or periphery 114 of the flange. Thus, since the closure 10 is tightly threaded into the container C, the deformable projection 106 is driven over the edge of the rim 114., and retains the compartment 102 in place at the closure 10. The projection 106 may be circumferentially continuous. Alternatively, the projection 106 may be formed of discrete, circumferentially spaced elements. The compartment 102 may include a sealed cover element 116, for isolating the contents of the compartment 102 from the contents of the container C. With the compartment 102 in place in the closure 10, a small gap 118 is defined between the cover element 116 and the liner 36. The compartment optionally includes an extended wall portion 120, to provide a fastening region to facilitate clamping and removal of the compartment 102 of the closure 10. In the modified embodiment illustrated in FIGURE 3a, the deformable projection of the liner , designated 106 ', is generally positioned adjacent to, and just inward of, tip 32 of the closure. By this arrangement, the projection 106 'is engageable with a surface generally facing outwardly from the associated container, together with creation of a so-called top / side seal on the cord 46. As in the previous embodiment, the projection 106' cooperates advantageously with the container to retain the wall 110 of the associated compartment. Another embodiment of the compartment 202 is illustrated in FIGURES 4, 6 and 7. In order to retain the compartment 210 in place in the closure 10, the liner 36 has a retaining element 204 formed therein. In a preferred embodiment, the retaining element 204 includes a hook-like portion 206, at one end thereof. The compartment 202 includes a flange portion 208, which, when the closure 10 is mounted, is positioned adjacent to and in contact with the second side 40 of the liner 36. A cylindrical hanging wall 210 hangs from the flange portion 208. An end cap 212 extends through the end of the hanging wall 210 and encloses the compartment 202. The flange portion 208 includes a circumferentially extending bifurcated region 214, and at a proximal end of the liner 36. The region bifurcated 214 defines inner and outer annular walls 216 and 218, which are configured to receive the retainer 204 therein. In a preferred embodiment, the outer wall 218 is configured with a portion that receives a hook 220, which is adapted to coact with, and engage the hook-like portion of the retaining element 206, to retain the compartment 202 in place. in the closure 10, when the closure is coupled with the container C. As illustrated in FIGURE 4, when the closure 10 is threaded in the container C, the upper surface T of the finish, engages at least a portion of the flange 208 for keep compartment 202 in place. In addition, the internal surface I of the container finish F, urges the outer wall 218 and the portion receiving a hook 220, in engagement with the hook-like portion 206 formed in the liner 36. The compartment 202 optionally includes a member 20 fastening, such as the illustrated rim 222, to facilitate removal of the compartment 202 from the closure. Alternatively, as illustrated in FIGURE 6, the fastening member may include a pull ring 226, formed as a part of the compartment 202. Those skilled in the art will recognize that other configurations may be used for the fastening members, for to facilitate the removal of the compartment 202 from the closure 10, other configurations which are considered within the scope of the present invention. The compartment 202 may also include a sealed cover element 228, for isolating the contents of the compartment 202 from the contents of the container C. In the embodiment illustrated in FIGURE 4, the cover member 228 includes a removal tab 230, which may pull upward, relative to the compartment, to remove the cover element 228, after the compartment 202 is removed from the closure 10. It will be readily recognized that the removal tab 230 may be provided in any of the embodiments of the compartment 12, 102 , 202 described herein. With the compartment 202 in place at the closure 10, a small gap 232 is defined between the cover element 228 and the liner 36. It is currently contemplated that the promotional closure which includes the removable compartment member 12, 102, 202, will be used in a promotional game system. The promotional game system will include a plurality of closures 10, which include the removable compartment 12, 102, 202, and a plurality of closures containing a simulated promotion 302, an example of which is illustrated in FIGURE 5. simulated closure 302 includes a plastic closure cap 304, which is similar to the lid 14. The cap 304 includes a circular upper wall portion 306, a hanging annular skirt portion 308, which hangs from the upper wall portion 16. The skirt portion 308 has an internal threaded formation 310, on the inner surface thereof, for threadably coupling a cooperative vessel C, to which the closure 302 is adjusted. The ventilation slots 312, which extend axially along the interior of the skirt portion 308, pass through the threaded formation 310. The ventilation slots 312, facilitate the release and ventilation of the air. gas, which can pressurize the container when the container is used to store, for example, carbonated drinks. Similar to closure 10, closure 302 may be formed with a burglary band 314, to provide discernible, visible evidence that closure 302 has been partially or totally removed from the container. The anti-theft band may be configured in accordance with the teachings of the aforementioned US Patent No. 4,938,370 to McBride, and formed in accordance with the teachings of the aforementioned US Patent No. 4,497,765 to Wilde et al. The closure 302 has a lip 316 extending up and inward thereof, generally at the junction of the upper wall portion 306 and the skirt portion 308. The lip 316 extends circumferentially of the closure 302, and can be formed as A continuous element, or can be formed by discrete segments. A depression 318 is formed between the lip 316 and the upper wall portion 306.
A liner 320 can be formed in the closure 302, using an appropriate molding process in place. The liner 320 has a first side 322, which is formed adjacent the upper wall portion 306, and a second side 324, which extends into the closure 302. The liner 320 is retained in place in the closure 302 by a retaining bead 326, which extends circumferentially around the liner 320, within the depression 318, and engages the lip 316, and / or attaching the liner to the closure. The retaining cord 326, defines, in part, a portion of the sealing cord 328. A mock-up, unsealed, open promotional pouch 330, hangs from the second side 324 of the liner 320. The pouch 330 extends downwardly, in relation to the liner 320, and is open to the contents of the container C. The bag 330 is configured so that the outer wall 332 thereof, does not form a seal with the internal surface of the container finish (not shown). The simulated promotional closure 302 is configured to look and be indistinguishable from the promotional closure 10, when the closures 10, 302 are placed on, and coupled with, the respective containers C. The containers and contents will, of course, be identical, thus increasing the inability to distinguish between closures 10, 302.
The game system includes a plurality of promotional locks 10, which have promotional pieces P, such as a dollar bill, therein, and a plurality of simulated promotional locks 302. All closures 10, 302 will be coupled with a container, in a commonly recognized way. As provided above, the promotional seals 10 and the simulated promotional seals 302, will be indistinguishable from one another, when placed in a container, which is filled with a soft drink. Buyers of soft drink with promotional closure, will be rewarded immediately, opening the recipient and the compartment, receiving the promotional piece, "in place". Those who buy the soft drink with the simulated promotional closure 302, will certainly be disappointed, however, can be comforted by an announcement 334, such as "please try again", which appears in the closing. In this regard, it is within the scope of the present invention to provide at least one of the promotional seals 302 with the announcement means thereon, which may be printed, molded, or otherwise provided. Such advertisement means may be associated with an additional reward of the present game system, thereby providing a "game within a game", a plural mode by which consumers may receive promotions from the game system. Thus, even system closures that do not contain promotional items within a compartment can, however, be used for potential rewards. It is recognized by those skilled in the art that a benefit of the promotional closure with an internal, removable compartment 10 is that the promotional compartment 12, 102, 202 can be removed from the closure 10, and the closure 10 will maintain its ability to seal the container C, so that the compartment 12, 102, 202 can be immediately removed from closure 10, without adversely affecting the ability of the closure to seal container C. From the foregoing, it will be noted that numerous modifications and variations can be made, without departing from the true spirit and scope of the novel concepts of the present invention. It should be understood that no limitation is intended, nor should be inferred, from the specific embodiments illustrated. It is intended that the description cover, by the appended claims, all modifications, since they fall within the scope of the claims. It is noted that in relation to this date, the best method known by the applicant to carry out the aforementioned invention, is the conventional one for the manufacture of the objects to which it relates.
