Abstract

The present invention relates to a Pica that allows the user to attach a roll using said load elevator. The load elevator can then lift the roll and move it on a platform. Once on the platform, the cutting assembly that has a cutting tower, a cutting arm and a saw can be placed at the desired cutting level. A saw can then be used to cut the roll until the desired width is reached. A fixing sheet can be used to polish the edge of the roll

Description

ROLLER CUTTER Field of the Invention The present invention relates generally to a machine for rolls of paper and, more particularly, to a device for cutting a roll of paper.
Background of the Invention It will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that rolls of paper tend to be very large, heavy and bulky. These rolls, such as rolls of paper, are not very easy to maneuver and handle. It will be further appreciated by those skilled in the art that often these rolls of paper may be damaged in the end. At other times, such rolls of paper may be too wide to be fed to a press to create the desired product and size. For example, the user may wish to have a sheet with a width of 32 inches when only the available roll is 36 inches. As a result of this, at the end of many runs, the paper is wasted because it can not be used in any other way.
Currently, the only known method for cutting paper is to drag the paper roll over a band saw and allow the band saw to work slowly and advance through the entire paper roll. Unfortunately, this causes the roll to be placed on its side for a prolonged period of time thus allowing possible twisting of the roll out of the circle.
What is required, then, is a system for cutting rolls of materials such as paper. This required device must be able to cut rolls very efficiently and easily. This device should be able to easily handle bulky and heavy paper rolls. This device must be able to convert wide rolls into narrower rolls. The required device must also be able to sand on the edge of a roll. This device does not currently exist in the state of the art.
Objects of the Invention The present invention describes a roll cutter. The roll cutter has a frame. A base, a cutting assembly and, possibly, a winch assembly are attached to the frame. The optional winch assembly is a telescopic tower that allows the user to attach a roll using a winch. The winch can then lift the roll and move it on the platform. Otherwise, the roll can be placed in position using external movement devices such as forklifts. Once it is on the platform, the cutting assembly that has a cutting tower, a cutting arm and a saw can be placed at the desired cutting level. A saw can then be used to cut the roll until the desired width is reached. The blade of the saw can have a sander face, or a setter wheel can replace the saw blade to sand the surface of the roll.
What is required, then, is a system for cutting a roll such as paper.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a cutter having a platform that can easily receive the roll.
Another object of the invention is to provide a system for moving the roll and handling it.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a device that can be adjusted to cut the roll to the desired width.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a system that is economical, easy to use and easy to manufacture.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a system for sanding the edge of a roll.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Figure 1 is a perspective view of the roll cutter of the present invention. Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the roll cutter cutting a roll from the lower saw frame. Figure 3 is a perspective view of the roll cutter of the present invention, showing the cutting arm mounted on the lower frame;. Figure 4 is a perspective view showing the saw being mounted to the lower frame and cutting the core of the roll. Figure 5 is a perspective view of the roll cutter of the present invention, showing the cutting arm attached to the upper saw frame and cutting the core of a roll.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring now to Figure 1, the roll cutter of the present invention is generally shown at 10. The roll cutter 10 has a frame 12 which is preferably mounted or placed on the ground (not shown). The roll (100 in later Figures) is received by the platform 20 that is attached to the frame 12. The platform 20 has a pillar 22 that is fixed to the frame 12. On the top of the pillar 22 is placed a base 24. Preferably extending from the base 24 there are arms 26 which are supported by the winch 28. In the preferred embodiment, the pillar 22 can rotate with respect to the frame 12. Preferably, the platform 20 rests close to the intermediate section of the frame 12.
Still referring to Figure 1, in order to move the roll (100 in the following drawings) an optional lift assembly 14 is provided. The lift assembly 14 has a lift tower 60 preferably attached to the frame 12. The lift tower 60 preferably consists of of a lower section 62 and an upper section 64 that preferably has a telescopic action with respect to the other. Preferably, the upper section 64 is raised with respect to the lower section 62 and held in place by a bolt 60 arranged in the hole 68 in the lower section 62 and the hole 70 in the upper section 64. Multiple holes 70 are provided for adjustment purposes. Adjacent to the upper end of the upper section 64 is the loading elevator 50 which has a hoist 52 which controls the cable 54. The cable 54 then runs on the pulley 56 and raises and lowers the hook 58. The cable 54 can be placed around the roll (100 in the following drawings) or can be placed through the core (104 in the following drawings). If the elevator assembly 14 is not provided, a forklift or other external mechanism for positioning the roll 100 can be used.
Still referring to Figure 1, the cutting assembly of the present invention is generally shown at 16. The cutting assembly 16 has a lower portion 36 that is preferably attached to the frame 12. Preferably, the cutting tower 30 elevates an upper portion 35 with respect to a lower portion 36. This movement is performed by the piston 38 of the tower of cut. The upper portion 35 preferably has an upper saw frame 44 and a lower saw mount 46. The cutting arm 32 is releasably attached to either the upper saw frame 44 or the lower saw mount 46 using standard fixing means such as screws, fasteners or similar. The cutting arm 32 utilizes a slidable fastener 42 to join the saw 34 to the cutting arm 32. The fastener 42 may be either a fixed fastener or may be a slidable fastener. Sheet 48 is a standard saw blade. However, in the preferred embodiment, the blade 48 is also provided with a sanding edge. If a conventional saw blade for the blade 48 is used, a sanding blade can replace the cutting blade for sanding the sanding end 106.
Referring now to Figure 2, the roll cutter of the present invention is generally shown in reference 10. In this embodiment, the cutting arm 32 is attached to the lower saw assembly 46 as opposed to the upper saw assembly 44. This allows the device 10 to cut a narrower roll. In this particular embodiment, the device 10 is cutting material or paper 102 from the roll 100.
Referring now to Figure 3, the device of the present invention is generally shown at 10. This figure shows more clearly the cutting arm 32 fixed to the lower saw mount 46 as opposed to the upper saw mount 44.
Referring now to Figure 4, the device of the present invention is generally shown at 10. In this particular embodiment, the saw 34 is cutting the core 104 of the roll 100.
Referring now to Figure 5, a still further view of the device of the present invention is generally shown. In this particular view, the cutting arm 32 is fixed to the upper saw mount 44 and is cutting the core 104 of the roll 100.
In the preferred embodiment, the piston 38 of the cutting tower is either a hydraulic or a pneumatic piston. In the preferred embodiment, the saw 34 is a hydraulic or pneumatic rotary saw. In the preferred embodiment, the winch 52 is a hydraulic or pneumatic winch of the type that is manufactured by Braiden. In the preferred embodiment, the support 68 of the elevator pivots about the upper section 64.
Therefore, while preferred embodiments of the present invention have been described with respect to a novel and useful roll cutter, such references are not intended to be construed as limitations on the scope of this invention, except as set forth in the following claims. Furthermore, although certain dimensions used in the preferred embodiment have been described, it is not intended that said dimensions be construed as limitations on the scope of the invention except for what the following claims set forth.
