Description

CONTAINER PACKAGING AND LIQUID DISTRIBUTOR Field of the Invention The present invention relates to packaging containers and distributors of liquids and particularly to such packages which include a spout or spout and a closure that functions as a measuring cup.
Background and Brief Summary of the Invention In a type of packaging container and distributor of liquids such as that shown in U.S. Pat. No. 4,671,421, the plastic container comprises a molded plastic container having an annular finish, an insert placed in the finish and interengaged with the internal surface of the finish. The insert has internal threads for receiving an enlarged closure in the form of an automatic drain measuring cup having external threads on the lower end thereof and a peripheral protrusion which sealingly engages the free end of the finish. In another type ie packaging container and distributor of liquids such as that shown in U.S. Pat. No. 4,706,829, the packaging container and No. Ref. 27722 liquid distributor comprises a hollow plastic container having a neck and an interlocking device for the neck and the closure. The device or accessory interengagates the neck and has a first axially extending peripheral portion and having a portion defining a nozzle or spout having a pouring lip extending axially inward of the end of the neck, and a closure comprising an upper wall and a first peripheral wall extending from the upper wall axially inwardly. The closure includes a radial portion extending from the peripheral wall and sealingly engaging an annular area of the accessory or device. The closure defines a dispensing cup and includes a second outer peripheral wall spaced from the first peripheral wall which has internal threads that engage external threads on the neck of the container. In another type of packaging container and distributor of liquid shown in U.S. Pat. No. 5,462,202, a liquid container and dispenser package comprises a plastic body which has an interior wall defining an axial nozzle extending from inside the neck of a container and axially beyond the end of the neck. The body has an outer annular wall spaced from the nozzle and connected to the nozzle by an integral annular connection portion. The nozzle extends axially beyond the outer wall and has a generally C-shaped cross section defining an opening and a lower annular cross section. The annular connection portion is inclined with respect to the axis of the nozzle and has its lower portion aligned with the opening of the C-shaped portion of the nozzle. The outer wall has an axial opening extending from a position aligned with the junction of the C-shaped portion and the annular portion of the nozzle through the annular connecting portion to define a combined drainage rear opening, and an outlet hole for pouring, almost empty. The attachment or device is provided with means on the upper end of the outer wall for coupling the neck of the container. The lower portion of the nozzle is substantially smooth in an axial direction to facilitate rear or rear drainage. The lower portion of the nozzle has an internal surface formed with an integral axial flange aligned with the axial opening in the outer wall to facilitate fabrication. The wall of the fitting is provided with an axially extending opening, from a position aligned with the junction of the C-shaped portion and an annular portion to define a combined drainage rear opening and an outlet orifice for pouring, almost clear or empty Among the objectives of the present invention are to provide a liquid container and dispenser container wherein a rear drain nozzle is welded to the interior surface of the finish of a plastic container; wherein the weld is such as to provide a seal between the finish and the nozzle; and a method for manufacturing such a container and distributor of liquid packaging. According to the invention, a plastic container and nozzle, with subsequent drainage, combined, includes a plastic container having a body and a finish. The finish has an axial portion and an internal annular floor. A rear drain nozzle comprising an outer annular wall and an integral nozzle connected to the outer wall and the outer annular wall of the nozzle and the container are rotatably welded along the annular floor. The annular floor is machined before rotating welding. A method of making a plastic container and nozzle, of rear drainage, combined, includes the formation of a plastic container having a body and a finish having an axial portion, a first internal annular floor and a second annular floor over the axial portion of the finish. The rear drain nozzle is formed with an external annular wall and an integral nozzle connected to the wall. The nozzle is inserted in such a manner that the annular wall of the nozzle and the container are in contact along the annular floor and then the nozzle is rotatably welded to the finish along the annular projection. Preferably, the annular floor is machined before insertion and rotary welding.

Detailed Description of the Preferred Modalities According to the invention, the container and distributor of the liquid 20 comprises a hollow plastic container 22 having a body and a neck or finish 24. The package 20 further includes an accessory or insert 26 comprising an internal nozzle 28 centrally positioned having an arched upper portion 30 which is generally C-shaped in its cross section. The tia 28 has a lower annular portion 32. The accessory 26 further includes an outer wall portion 4 interconnected by an annular portion 36 and extending generally upward and outwardly. The outer wall portion 34 further includes a peripheral protrusion 38 adapted to engage the upper surface of the finish 24. The gasket 20 further includes a closure 40 which is generally cylindrical, including an upper wall 42 and a peripheral wall 44. The peripheral wall 44 extends downwardly within the wall 34 of the nozzle 28. The closure 40 further includes an annular wall 46 extending radially outwardly intermediate the ends of the peripheral wall 44 and an annular axial skirt 48 extending downwardly. and having external threads 50 which couple the internal threads 52 on the wall 34. The container 22 can be made of plastic material such as high density polyethylene. The accessory 26 may be made of other plastic materials, for example, low density polyethylene. The closure 40 can also be made of a plastic material such as polypropylene. The wall 36 of the fitting 26 is provided with an opening or slot 60 extending axially from a position aligned with the junction of the C-shaped portion and the annular portion to define a combined rear drainage opening and an exit orifice for pouring almost empty. Accordingly, the nozzle or accessory 26 has a continuous uninterrupted groove 58, which is a combination of the previous, almost empty and draining orifices. According to the invention, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, the plastic container 22 is made on an extrusion blow molding machine and includes a blow molded finish 24 having at least one annular flange 60 that is extends inward. The outer annular wall 34 of the accessory 26 is cylindrical and is inserted by a friction fit for engagement with the cylindrical surface of the flange 60. Preferably the surface 62 of the shoulder 60 is machined after molding. After this, the accessory 26 is rotated relative to the container 22 to rotationally weld the accessory 26 to the container 22. After the rotary welding, the air under pressure is provided to the interior of the container and the vacuum surrounding the tube 64 to provide the air which causes the purging of any particles or slags from rotating welding. A vacuum is provided to facilitate the removal as in 66 (Figure 13). In accordance with another aspect of the invention, the projections 68 spaced circumferentially over the interior of the accessory provide means for uniformly coupling the accessory during rotary welding.
Furthermore, according to the invention, the projection 38 on the accessory 26 has a bevel 70 on its upper end to facilitate the insertion of the closure. In addition, an annular, downwardly extending shoulder 72 is provided on the periphery of the annular wall of the accessory 26 and has a bevelled surface 74 to facilitate insertion of the fitting in a snap fit within the container 22. The wall 46 of the accessory 26 includes an annular projection extending upwards, annular, in the shape of cord 76, which preferably has a V-shaped cross section, which couples the wall 46 to provide a primary seal between the closure 40 and the accessory 26, and, in turn, forces the fixture 26 against the end of the finish 24. It was contemplated that the apparatus be provided for insertion and rotary welding which incorporates handling as described in US Pat. No. 4,817,363, incorporated herein by reference. Accordingly, it can be seen that a liquid container and dispenser package has been provided wherein a nozzle for subsequent drainage is welded to the interior surface of the finish of a plastic container; wherein the weld is such that it provides a seal between the finish and the nozzle; and a method of manufacturing such a container and distributing liquid container.
It is noted that in relation to this date, the best method known to the applicant to carry out the aforementioned invention, is that which is clear from the present description of the invention.
Having described the invention as above, property is claimed as contained in the following
