Description
COMPOSITION IN TRANSPARENT COSMETIC BAR
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to cosmetic stick compositions, for example, cosmetic solid stick compositions such as solid stick deodorant compositions. More specifically, the present invention relates to cosmetic solid stick compositions containing an alcohol (e.g., a monohydric alcohol, such as ethanol, or a polyhydric alcohol, such as polypropylene glycol) and water, and gelled with a soap ( for example, an alkali metal salt of a saturated fatty acid). In particular, the present invention relates to transparent cosmetic solid stick compositions with improved clarity so as to achieve improved appearance, which retain such enhanced transparency for an extended period of time, and which have an improved docility while maintaining a satisfactory rigidity.
The present invention is especially related to gel-clear gel deodorant stick compositions "which are clear and maintain such transparency for extended periods of time, and which have an improved docility while maintaining rigidity, the compositions contain a material active deodorant such as a fragrance and / or an antibacterial agent. However, the present invention is not limited to bar compositions deodorant gels with soap and clear, but has an improved applicability to other transparent bars. That is, depending on the cosmetic active ingredient incorporated in the stick composition (eg, a deodorant active ingredient, an insect repellent, a sun lotion, an emollient, etc.), the cosmetic composition in stick according to The present invention may be a deodorant stick composition, an insect repellent stick, a sun lotion stick, a skin care stick, etc.
It has been desired to provide a clear cosmetic stick composition gelled with soap, such as a clear deodorant solid bar composition gelled with soap which retains its clarity for an extended period of time, to have a long shelf life. Such transparent stick compositions have a widely extended consumer appeal. It has been desired to provide such a transparent stick composition which maintains clarity for extended periods of time, for example, before being purchased by the consumer and until the product has been used by the consumer. In particular, it has been desired to provide such a transparent bar composition, having a long shelf life, which prevents crystals from forming on the bar.
It has also been desired to provide a clear cosmetic stick composition gelled with soap, such as a solid stick deodorant composition having an improved docility while maintaining a good stiffness of the stick. By improved docility, it is meant that the fracture potential of the cosmetic bar is reduced. Consequently, the consumer will be better able to roll the bar products out of the dispensing package without fracturing the bar product, or removing the cap from the dispensing package without breaking the bar product. Improved docility will reduce the propensity for product breakage when the spout pack lid is removed, where the product is stored with the end of the bar protruding from the spout pack.
U.S. Patent No. 4,759,924 issued to Luebbe et al., The contents of which are incorporated by reference in their entireties, discloses transparent soap-gel cosmetic bar compositions containing an aliphatic polyhydric alcohol having 2-6 carbon atoms and 2-6 hydroxy groups1; Water; a soap gel forming agent; and a hydroalcoholic soluble emollient having the formula R (OC3H6) to (OC2H4) bOH wherein R is either hydrogen or a hydrocarbon chain having from about 1 to 18 carbon atoms, and / (a + b) = 0.5 This patent discloses that the polyhydric alcohol can illustratively be ethylene glycol or propylene glycol, and that mixtures of the polyols can be used, and that, illustratively, the soap gel forming agent can be selected from sodium, potassium and aluminum salts or of saturated or unsaturated fatty acids containing from about 14 to 18 carbon atoms. Preferred soap gel formers include sodium stearate, sodium palmitate, potassium stearate, potassium palmitate, sodium myristate and aluminum monostearate. Illustrative hydroalcoholic soluble emollients include PPG-5-Ceteth 20, PPG-3-Myreth-3, PEG-20-laurate, PEG-6-32 and Polyoxamer 335.
U.S. Patent No. 4,759,924 further discloses that the stick composition may include several optional ingredients, including conventional deodorant materials; and that the bar composition (gel bar) can be used by the consumer by rubbing the bar over the area of the body where the application is desired. For example, in the case of the deodorant bar for the application under the arm, the bar is rubbed in the area of the armpit to apply the deodorant material.
Although US Pat. No. 4,759,924 discloses a bar composition that is indicated as being transparent, this patent does not disclose maintaining transparency, or clarity, of the bar for an extended period of time. In addition, this patent is silent as to the docility of the bar formed.
U.S. Patent No. 5,128,123 issued to Brewster et al., The contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference in their entirety, describes the cosmetic compositions, in the form of bars, which are clear and smooth, containing (in addition to a polyhydric alcohol having from 2-6 carbon atoms and from 2-6 hydroxyl groups, water, and a soap gelation agent), both (a) an alkoxylate copolymer; and (b) a basic amine clarifying agent present in an amount effective to maintain clarity of the bar. The alkoxylate copolymer has a formula [A = CH2CH2-A] f [(C2H40) a (C3H60) b (C2H40) c (C3H60) d] e [H] g, wherein A is nitrogen, a, b, c and d are independently selected integers varying from 0 to 200 with the proviso that the sum of a, b, c and d is at least about 50; e is an integer from 1 to 4; f is an integer from 0 to 1; and g is an integer from 0 to 4. This patent discloses that the copolymer partially replaces the soap as a structurant in the bar. This patent further discloses that when f and e are 0 and 1, respectively, the structure described is a copolymer of poly (ethylene oxide) (propylene oxide) (ethylene oxide). This patent further discloses that the clarifying agent is preferably selected from amino alkanols having from 2-6 hydroxyl groups, with propan amines being particularly effective.
U.S. Patent No. 5,128,123 also defines what is meant by the term "clear" with respect to the stick composition described therein. Specifically, the term "clear" has its usual dictionary definition; therefore, a clear cosmetic bar such as glass allows an easy view of the objects behind it. This patent contrasts clear cosmetic bars with translucent cosmetic bars, which allow light to pass through them but cause the light to spread so that it is impossible to clearly identify the objects behind the translucent bar. Therefore, in the present art there is a difference between the clear, translucent and opaque bars. This patent continues to define clear, translucent and opaque bars based on the transmission of light of wavelengths in the range of 400 to 900 nm through a 1 cm thick sample.
Although US Pat. No. 5,128,123 discloses a transparent cosmetic stick which is intended to maintain its clarity for extended periods of time, this patent does not provide any description regarding the docility of the product.
U.S. Patent No. 4,822,602 issued to Sabatelli discloses a cosmetic stick composition that includes the following components: (a) water-soluble active; (b) Dimethicone copolyol; (c) volatile silicone oil; (d) propylene glycol; (e) C2-C4 monohydric alcohol; (f) water; (g) solidifying agent; and (h) coupling agent. The "dimethicone copolyol" is defined in this patent as one or more dimethylpolysiloxanes modified with polyalkylene oxide. The solidifying agent may vary depending on the particular type of cosmetic stick desired (e.g., a wax stick a gel stick), and may be a soap-like gel-forming agent such as a sodium, potassium and / or salt. or fatty acid aluminum containing from about 14 to about 18 carbon atoms.
U.S. Patent No. 4,822,602 is not described as being a transparent cosmetic stick. In addition, the United States patent of
North America No. 4,822,602 is silent as to the docility of the cosmetic bar produced.
Therefore, it is still desired to provide a transparent cosmetic stick composition, such as a transparent deodorant stick composition, which is clear and maintains clarity for extended periods of time, and which provides a stick product having a docility Improved while maintaining the rigidity of the bar product.
SYNTHESIS OF THE INVENTION
Therefore, it is an object of the present invention to provide a cosmetic stick composition (e.g., a solid stick deodorant composition) that is clear with improved clarity, and which maintains such clarity for extended periods of time; and in particular during the shelf life and the period of use of the bar composition by a consumer.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a transparent cosmetic stick composition, which is transparent even when a cosmetically active material is incorporated there, and which maintains clarity for relatively long periods of time (such as to have a life in the relatively long shelf as a clear product).
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a transparent cosmetic stick composition, such as a transparent deodorant stick composition, which contains alcohol and water, and gelled by a soap (such as the alkali metal salts of fatty acids), which maintains clarity for long periods of time, and where the crystals are not formed within the composition over these long periods of time.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a cosmetic solid stick composition which is clear when it has cosmetically active materials incorporated therein and which maintains such clarity, and which maintains such clarity, and which provides a stick product having an improved docility (to thereby reduce the fracture potential of the bar as the bar moves out of a dispenser package or when the package lid is removed) while maintaining a stiffness of the satisfactory bar product.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a transparent deodorant stick composition having an active deodorant material incorporated therein, which can be applied, for example, to the axillary regions of the body to reduce or prevent odor from underarms
It is yet a further object of the present invention to provide a transparent deodorant stick composition having deodorant active materials incorporated therein, which is clear and maintains clarity for extended periods of time, and which has improved docility while maintaining rigidity satisfactory.
The above objects are achieved, according to the present invention by incorporating, in the gelled stick composition with soap containing alcohol and water, at least one alkoxylate material selected from the group consisting of alkoxylate homopolymers and dimethicone copolyols , the alkoxylate material being included in the composition in an amount such as to provide a clarified (e.g., clear) composition. Illustratively, but not limitingly, the alkoxylate material is included in the composition in an amount of 0.5-20% by weight, of the total weight of the composition.
Exemplary alkoxylate homopolymers include ethoxylate homopolymers and propoxylate homopolymers. Ethoxylate homopolymers include polyethylene glycols, as well as ethoxylated surfactants (surfactants). These alkoxylate homopolymers according to the present invention differ from the materials incorporated in the stick composition in U.S. Patent No. 5,128,123 to Brewster et al., Which requires the alkoxylate copolymers.
The above objects are also achieved according to the present invention, by incorporating the nonionic surfactants in the ungelled cosmetic bar composition containing alcohol and water. The nonionic surfactant, illustratively, is incorporated into the composition in an amount of 0.5-20% by weight of the total weight of the composition. Various alkoxylate homopolymers, including various ethoxylate homopolymers and various propoxylate homopolymers, are nonionic surfactants that can be incorporated into the stick composition as clarifying agents according to the present invention.
Preferably, the gelation agent of the composition of the present invention contains salts of saturated or unsaturated fatty acids having a chain length of C 12 -C 22 carbon, with at least some of these salts being salts of fatty acids having a chain length of carbon? -e C20 and / or C22. Using, for example, the sodium salts of the long chain saturated fatty acids of carbon chain length of C20 and / or C22 a product having a higher gelation temperature and improved stability is provided.
However, a problem arises when using such a soap gelation agent which includes salts of fatty acids having carbon chain lengths of C20 and / or C22 in the sense that there is an increased crystallization in the stick composition during extended periods. of time, disadvantageously affecting the clarity of the bar composition. Such crystallization can be reduced when the alkoxylate materials are incorporated into the stick composition, according to the present invention.
The transparent stick composition according to the present invention can include various active materials, including sun lotions, active deodorant materials, insect repellents, etc. As will be appreciated, depending on the active material incorporated, the product formed will be a sun protection bar, a deodorant bar, an insect repellent bar, etc. As to various active materials which can be incorporated into the stick composition according to the present invention, and the amounts of these materials, see U.S. Patent No. 5,128,123, the contents of which have been previously incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.
It is desirable not to include components in the stick composition of the present invention that could disadvantageously affect the clarity of the final product. Therefore, it is preferred that these materials which reduce clarity are not incorporated into the composition of the present invention.
With the above warning, the compositions according to the present invention may include several additional materials conventionally included in the cosmetic stick compositions. Various materials incorporated into the stick compositions are described in U.S. Patent Nos. 4,759,924 and 5,128,123, the contents of which have been previously incorporated herein by reference in their entirety. Additional materials may include, illustratively (in a limiting manner) polyols, fatty alcohols, alkanolamine, color (dyes), essential oils, soluble inorganic salts of sodium and potassium, etc.
Therefore, by the present invention, which incorporates various alkoxylate materials selected from alkoxylate homopolymers and dimethicone copolyols, or non-ionic surfactants, in the bar composition gelled with soap containing water and alcohol, a solid stick composition is achieved "That is clear, with improved clarity, and maintains clarity for relatively long periods of time; and that it has an improved docility while maintaining a satisfactory product rigidity. In addition, various active cosmetic ingredients, such as deodorant active ingredients in the composition, can be incorporated to provide, for example, clear deodorant stick compositions "which retain their clarity for long periods of time, while enhancing docility and having good deodority. product rigidity.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Although the present invention will be described in connection with specific and preferred embodiments, it will be understood "that it is not intended to limit the invention to those modalities. On the contrary, it is intended to cover all alterations, modifications and equivalents as may be included within the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
Therefore, even though the description is more specific with respect to transparent deodorant stick compositions, the present invention is not limited to deodorant compositions, but includes within its scope various cosc products, depending on the coscally active material incorporated in the bar composition.
Through the present disclosure, wherein the compositions are described as including or comprising specific components or materials, it is contemplated by the inventors that the compositions of the present invention also consist essentially or consist of the components or materials recited. Thus, through the present disclosure any described composition of the present invention may consist essentially or consist of the recited components or materials.
Throughout the present description, several of the components of the compositions described are denoted by their name in the International Cosc Ingredient Dictionary
CTFA (4th Edition, 1991) whose contents are incorporated by reference in their entirety.
The present invention is directed, in general, to transparent cosc stick compositions. Of course, it is meant the usual dictionary definition of this term. Therefore a clear cosc bar like glass allows an easy view of the objects behind it. In contrast, a translucent cosc bar, even though it allows light to pass through it, causes the light to spread so that it is impossible to clearly identify the objects behind the translucent bar. Opaque bars do not allow light to pass through them. Therefore, according to the present invention there is a distinction between, for example, the "clear" and "translucent" cosc bars.
Generally, a 1 cm slice of the stick composition according to the present invention will allow a light transmission of 60% of any wavelength in the range of 600-900 nm. However, we do not wish to limit ourselves to such a 60% transmission, resting on the usual dictionary definition of the word "clear" as previously discussed and known in the present art.
The present invention contemplates clear cosc stick compositions (e.g., solid stick deodorant compositions) containing alcohol and water, and gelled with fatty acid salts (soaps) (saturated or unsaturated fatty acids), the compositions further include materials of alkoxylates selected from the group consisting of alkoxylate homopolymers and diicone copolyols, to clarify the composition. The alkoxylate homopolymers are preferably those that act as nonionic surfactants, most desirably those having a hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) of at least 24. The alkoxylate homopolymers which can be incorporated into the composition of the present invention are illustrated by the following compounds. These compounds illustrate the present invention, and are not limiting of the present invention. In the following, the adopted name of the CTFA is established, with a commercial product and a seller in parentheses. Thus, alkoxylated homopolymers include Pareth-C14-15 2.75 (Neodol 45-2.25 from Shell Chemical Company); Pareth C14-15 13 (Neodol 45-13 from Shell Chemical Company); Ceteareth-55 (Plurafac A-39, from BASF Corporation); PPG-10 Cetyl Ether (Procetyl 10, from Croda, Inc.); PPG-50 Cetil Ether (Procetil 50, from Croda, Inc.) and PEG-6 Lauramide (Amidox L-5, from Stepan Company).
The dimethicone copolyols can be used as the clarifying agent in the present invention. The dimethicone copolyol can have both side chains of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide, or the side chains of polyalkylene oxide consist of only polyethylene oxide side chains or can consist only of side chains of polypropylene oxide. Illustrative dimethicone copolyols include Abil B8851 and Abil 88852, which respectively are dimethicone copolyol having only polyethylene oxide side chains and having only side chains of polypropylene oxide; Each of these dimethicone copolyols is a commercial product of Goldschmidt Chemical Corporation.
In general, the alkoxylate materials according to the present invention will include at least 2 moles (more desirably, at least 2.25 moles) of alkylene oxide functionalities (eg, ethylene oxide and / or propylene oxide), to provide the desired clarification of the composition.
In the following several structural formulas are established for the alkoxylate materials according to the present invention. The materials falling within these structural formulas are illustrative materials which may be incorporated as part of the compositions of the present invention, and are not limiting.
RO (CH2CH2)) nH R = chain length of C9-C18 hydrocarbon n = 2 to 50
CH,
R (OCHCH2) nOH II
R = chain length of C12-C18 hydrocarbon n = 2 to 50
RO-C (0) -NH- (CH2CH20) nH III
R = hydrocarbon chain length C12-C1S n = 2 to 50
An illustrative formula for dimethicone copolyol is set forth below. Similarly, this formula is illustrative, and is not limiting to the present invention.
CH, CH 3 \ (CH 3) 3-Si-0 -Si-O- -Si-Si (CH 3 3) '3. IV / CH3
m n (CH2) 3 -0 (-C2 2H "4u0) 'X? l (-C ^ 3H •" 6d0'-V-H m + n = 10-30 x + y = 100%
By x + y = 100%, we mean that the total number of ethoxylate groups and propoxylate groups is equal to 100%, for example, dimethicone copolyol can be 75% ethoxylated and 25% propoxylated.
The alcohol included in the solid stick composition of the present invention can be a monohydric and / or polyhydric alcohol (for example, ethanol as a monohydric alcohol, and propylene glycol and / or dipropylene glycol as polyhydric alcohols). The alcohol can be a mixture of alcohols, including a mixture of monohydric and polyhydric alcohols, or a mixture of monohydric alcohols or a mixture of polyhydric alcohols. Various polyhydric alcohols which can be used in the bar compositions containing water- and alcohol gelled with soap are described in the patent of the
United States of America No. 4,759,924, the contents of which have been previously incorporated herein by reference in their entirety, and may also be used in the present invention.
A necessary component of the stick cosmetic composition according to the present invention is the soap gel forming agent. The sodium salts of the fatty acids of the C12-C22 carbon chain length, for example, the sodium salts of the saturated fatty acids having the carbon chain length mentioned above, can be used as the gel-forming agent. Preferred gel forming agents according to the present invention include the sodium salts (ie, soaps) of the relatively long chain saturated fatty acids of carbon chain (eg, the sodium salts of saturated fatty acids having chain lengths of C20 and / or C22 carbon). The fatty acid portions of the soap may include a mixture of saturated fatty acids other than carbon chain length in the range of C12-C22, preferably including some C20 and / or C22. By using such fatty acids of relatively long chain length, a product having a relatively high melting temperature and, correspondingly, a relatively higher stability is provided.
Preferred gel-forming agents according to the present invention include mixtures of sodium fatty acid soaps, having different fatty acid moieties. For example, the soap gel forming agent may be a mixture of sodium laurate, sodium myristate, sodium palmitate, sodium stearate, sodium arachidate, and sodium behenate, with the sodium fatty acid soaps respectively having preferably The following distribution:
DISTRIBUTION OF FATTY ACID
Fatty Acid Soap% (By weight of the soap mixture) Sodium Laurate 2% Sodium myristate 4-7% Sodium palmitate 35-44% Sodium stearate 31-44% Sodium arachidate 7-9% Sodium sodium 8-10%
This mixture of sodium fatty acid soaps having the desired distribution can be provided in any number of ways known in the art. For example, pure sodium laurate, pure sodium myristate, etc., can be mixed together in desired proportions. Or different mixtures of sodium fatty acid soaps (for example, commercial class sodium stearate, containing sodium stearate, sodium palmitate, etc., and another mixture of sodium fatty acid soaps) can be combined to provide the distribution desired.
The above fatty acid soap distribution of the soap gel forming agent is illustrative, and not limiting, of the present invention.
Illustratively, and not limitingly, the cosmetic stick composition according to the present invention may include the following amounts (in percent by weight of the total weight of the composition) of other components than the alkoxylate material:
Alcohol (for example, propylene glycol): 55-80% Water: 9-25% Soap: 4-10%.
Other materials may be included in the clear stick compositions according to the present invention and include the various cosmetically active materials. For example, and without limitation, the stick compositions according to the present invention can include cosmetically active materials such as deodorant active materials (including fragrances and antibacterial agents), sun lotions, skin conditioners, nail conditioners. and similar. For the purposes of the present invention, these other materials should not satisfactorily affect clarity, and where appropriate, should be capable of being applied safely to the human body.
As previously indicated, the compositions according to the present invention can be used as underarm deodorant compositions (eg, by applications to the armpit regions of the human body) when having active deodorant materials incorporated in the composition. Various active deodorant materials which may be included in the compositions according to the present invention, and the amounts of these materials, are described in U.S. Patent No. 4,759,924, the contents of which have been previously incorporated herein. by reference in its entirety, and include (but are not limited to) fragrances (e.g., perfume) and antibacterial agents (e.g., bacteriostats and bactericides), among others. For example, an active deodorant material useful as an antibacterial agent in the present invention is 2-4-4 '-trichloro-2' -hydroxydiphenyl ether (CTFA name: Triclosan). An antibacterial agent such as Triclosan is not a required component of the composition, even where the composition is a deodorant stick composition that is to be applied to the armpit regions to combat the body's foul odor.
Other ingredients such as dyes, pigments, coloring agents, etc., which do not disadvantageously affect the clarity of the solid stick compositions of the present invention, can be desirably incorporated into the gelled soap compositions of the present invention, amounts as conventionally incorporated and as discussed in U.S. Patent No. 4,759,924.
The compositions according to the present invention are manufactured by conventional processing techniques in the art. Specifically, the solid components of the composition are melted and these melted components are mixed. Preferably, the fragrance (if any) is added near the end of the manufacturing process (for example, it is the last added component), with the components previously mixed and not cooled to a lower temperature (while still maintaining a melted ) before adding the fragrance, as to limit any volatilization of the fragrance. While still in the liquid state, the composition is filled in a dispenser package as is conventional in the art and then cooled to solidify the product in the package.
The compositions according to the present invention are used by conventional techniques. For example, when compositions according to the present invention are used as a solid axillary deodorant stick, having active deodorizing materials (such as Triclosan and / or a fragrance) incorporated therein, the solid stick product is elevated outside the body. dispensing container as to expose the end of the product in bar, and that exposed part of the product in bar is then rubbed against, for example, the armpit region of the human body as to deposit the active deodorant materials on the skin in the region from the armpit.
Although in the foregoing, the present invention has been described in terms of a solid stick deodorant composition for use in the armpit regions, the present invention is not limited in this manner; and the cosmetic stick composition according to the present invention has various uses depending on the active material incorporated therein, including (but not limited to) as a deodorant for other parts of the body, a sun protection bar, a repellent bar insects, a skin softener, etc.
In the following, specific examples of the compositions will be established within the scope of the present invention. Of course these specific examples are illustrative of the present invention and are not limiting.
In the previous examples, the declared percentages are percentages by weight, of the declared component, in relation to the total weight of the composition. The names used are CTFA names for the ingredients, where applicable.
In the following examples, reference is made to the soap gel forming agent A. This soap gel forming agent is a mixture of different sodium fatty acid soaps, with different parts of fatty acid, as set forth in the following:
Fatty Acid Soap% (By weight of the soap mixture) Sodium Laurate 1 Sodium myristate 4 -10 Sodium palmitate 20 -30 Sodium stearate 25-42 Sodium arachidate 15-18 Sodium betahenate 17-20

Thus, by including the alkoxylate material as part of a cosmetic gel bar composition with soap containing alcohol and water, and gelled with a soap gelation agent according to the present invention, a clear cosmetic stick composition with improved clarity was achieved, which maintains improved clarity for extended periods of time. In addition, such stick composition has an improved docility while maintaining good stiffness. In addition, various cosmetically active materials including active deodorant materials such as conventional active deodorant materials, can be incorporated into the stick composition to provide, for example, a deodorant stick, while maintaining the aforementioned good properties (including clarity, rigidity and docility).
The attention is directed to the patent application of the United States of America presented concurrently by Makarand Shevade, Bhalchandra D. Moghe and Radhakrishna B. Kasat "Composition in Transparent Cosmetic Bar Containing a Combination of Anionic and Non-ionic Surfactants" (Attorney Case) No. 851.33536X00), whose contents are hereby incorporated by reference in their entirety.
Although the invention has been shown and described in various embodiments according to the present invention it is understood that it is not limited thereto, but is susceptible to numerous changes and modifications as known to those skilled in the art. Therefore, it is not desired to be limited to the details shown and described here, but rather to cover all such changes and modifications as encompassed by the scope of the appended claims.
