Abstract

The present invention relates to a seed tube guide for centering a seed tube in a seed sowing furrow, the seed sowing tube guide is mounted in a seed tube port extending downward from a seeder unit , the seed tube guide comprises: left and right mounting plates, each of the mounting plates has a notch to receive a spine that extends transversely over the seed tube guard, the plates grip the tube protection for seeds, left and right guide members attached to the left and right mounting plates to grip a seed tube between them, left and right guide members extend rearward from the left and right mounting plates

Description

SEED TUBE GUIDE BACKGROUND 1. Field of the Invention This invention is directed to a seed tube guide to keep the seed tube centered in a seed seeker groove. 2. Description of previous art Row crop planters generally comprise a transverse tool bar having a series of seeder units extending rearwardly. These units have a frame which is mounted a groove opener to form a groove of seed seeding in the seed bed. The furrow opener can be provided with furrow depth control wheels. A seed hopper can be mounted on the frame and direct the seeds to a seed doser. The seed doser doses the seeds and directs the seeds through a seed tube to the seed seeker groove formed by the furrow opener. The closing wheels follow the seed tube and groove opener.
In a seeder currently on the market, the groove opener comprises a double disc assembly. The seed tube is placed between the double discs. A seed tube guard comprising a metal member is placed in the front of the seed tube again between the double discs of the groove opener. Seed tubes are typically made of plastic. The seed tubes can be worn against the rotation of the disc blades, if the tube is not centered in the seed seeker furrow. The blades can eventually make a hole in the seed tube.
SYNTHESIS OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the present invention to provide a simple guide for keeping the seed tube centered in the seed seeker groove.
It is a feature of the present invention that this does not require any mounting fasteners, and is held in place by the adjacent parts.
The present invention relates to a plastic seed tube guide for maintaining the seed tube in the center of the seed seeker groove between the double disk openers. The seed tube guide comprises a unitary member having the mounting plates extending forwardly left and right to make contact with a seed tube guard. Each of the mounting plates has a notch to receive the sludge extending transversely from the protection of the seed tube. Extending backwards are the left and right guide members to grab the seed tube and center it in the seed seeker furrow.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Figure 1 is a side view of the row crop planter unit.
Figure 2 is a closed side view of the seed tube guide.
Figure 3 is a top view of the wheel support member taken along line 3-3.
Figure 4 is a top view of the seed tube guide.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION Figure 1 describes an agricultural seeding unit 10. The seeding unit is provided with a parallel hinge 11 which is mounted on a transverse tool bar 12 by a U-bolt 14 in a conventional manner. The seeder unit is provided with a seed reservoir 16 which directs the seeds to a seed doser 18. The seed dispenser 18 directs the seeds dosed into a seed tube 20 to place the seeds in a seed seer furrow. . The seed seeding groove is formed by a furrow opener 22. The gauge wheels 24 control the depth of the furrow opener 22. A pair of seed setter wheels 26 close the furrow after the seed has been deposited into the furrow. groove through the seed tube 20. The illustrated seed drill unit is also provided with a pesticide container 28 for directing pesticides to the soil by applicators 30. A suitable pesticide dispenser (not shown) controls the application of the pesticide. In addition, a bubble counter 32 is positioned in front of the groove opener 22 to help open the seed seeding groove. All these elements are mounted on a seed drill unit frame 33.
The planter described above is of a relatively conventional configuration. Typically, a plurality of seeder units are mounted on the tool bar 12 so that a farmer can plant more than one row in a single pass over the field. Although the present invention is illustrated as being mounted on a row crop planter unit 10 it can also be mounted on other planting equipment such as grain seeders and as such, the invention is not limited to row crop planters.
The frame of the seed drill unit is provided with a downwardly hanging seed tube shield 34. This shield 34 is located immediately in front of the seed tube 20 to protect the seed tube from the front contact with the seed seer furrow. . The guard 34 is provided with a transversely extending spine 36. The guide of the present invention is a unitary plastic part 40 having the left and right mounting plates 42 and 44, and the left and right guide members 46 and 48. Both mounting plates 42 and 44 are provided with the notches 50 to accommodate the transversely extending spine 36 of the seed tube guard 34. As shown in Fig. 4 the mounting plates 42 and 44 are pressed towards inside to better grip the seed protection 34.
The present seed tube guide is a simple part that places the plastic seed tube on the center line of the seed seeker furrow. This ensures better seed spacing and prevents the seed tube from being worn by the disc blades.
The invention should not be limited by the above-described embodiment but should be limited only by the claims that follow.
