Description

FILE MARKER DESCRIPTION This invention relates to archival systems and more particularly to devices for marking positions where material has been removed from a similar bin or receptacle drawer. Many different methods are commonly used to mark the position of material removed from a file. One such method is to insert a self-adhesive note, such as those sold under the 3M Post-It trademark, into the position within the file where some material has been removed. However, such notes tend to fall over time and certainly present a careless appearance. Another commonly used method is to lift a portion of the contents of the file, such as a sheet of paper, upward so that it protrudes from the contents of the general file and marks the position of the removed material. However, the displaced material generally presents a sloppy and disorganized appearance and likewise sometimes creates problems with the opening and closing of the folder drawer. A compilation of a file marker and measuring instrument has been proposed in design patent No. 331,598 by Martin. The file marker includes two legs attached to the top of a ruler to define V-shaped slots that hold the main edge of a hanging file folder. However, the placement of the file marker is limited to the main edges of the hanging file folders that have a steel rod that runs through them and can support the weight of the file marker. In contrast, individual and similar paper sheets do not have the strength to support file bookmarks and it is believed that the file marker would not be effective to mark positions within the contents of a file folder. An important aspect of this invention therefore lies in providing a file marker that is capable of infinite adjustment through the contents of a file and that can be placed at any selected point along a file drawer, regardless of if it is used to separate complete files or individual sheets of paper. Such results are achieved by providing a file marker having a body portion and means extending from the body portion to be coupled with the rail of a suspension file drawer and allowing an infinite placement of the file marker within the content of a file. In one embodiment, the means for coupling the file rail comprises a portion of a dependent leg and an intermediate portion extending between and connecting the body portion and the leg portion. The leg portion has a leg edge in parallel relation spaced apart to a body side edge of the body portion, and the parallel edges define a space therebetween sized to receive the rail of a suspension file box. A projection member is provided at one end of the body portion opposite the leg to engage the inside of the side board of the file drawer and maintain the file marker in a level orientation. The length of the file marker should be such that it fits both the rail and the side board and such length is also advantageous since it fits within a file of standard 3 by 5 address / telephone cards in a horizontal orientation. The file marker can therefore serve the double function of being used as a file marker inside a file drawer of suspension and inside a file cabinet of address / telephone of 3 by 5. Another advantageous aspect lies in providing a set of color-coded file markers. The color-coded file markers can be used to mark the file positions removed by different people so that the color of the file marker serves as a means indicator of who withdrew the files from a drawer.
Other advantages, objectives and characteristics of the invention will become apparent from the following drawings and specifications. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Figure 1 is a perspective view of a file marker embodying this invention in combination with a suspension file drawer. Figure 2 is a perspective view of a file marker embodying the present invention. Figure 3 is a side elevation view of a file marker embodying this invention. Figure 4 is a front elevation view of a set of color-coded file markers embodying this invention. Figure 5 is a perspective view of the file marker of the invention in combination with an address / phone card file. Referring to the drawings, the number 10 generally designates the file marker of this invention. The file marker 10 includes a body portion 11 shown in the form of a relatively flat rectangular board having generally rounded or curved corners. However, it will be understood that the configuration and size of the body portion 11 can vary considerably depending on the particular use intended. Referring to Figure 2, body portion 11 includes upper and lower edges 12 and 13 and body side edges 14 and 15. One of the body side edges is provided with means for engaging the rail of a suspension file drawer. and allow infinite positioning of the file marker along the rail and within the contents of a file drawer. In the embodiment shown in the illustrations, the coupling means includes a leg portion 16 and an intermediate portion 17 which extend between and connect the body portion 11 and the leg portion 16. The leg portion 16 and intermediate portion 17 are positioned adjacent a first end portion 14a of the edge of the body side 14 but may be provided on either side or end of the body portion 11. The leg portion 16 has a leg edge 16a in a ratio parallel spaced apart from the edge of the body side 14, and the parallel edges define a space g therebetween which is sized to receive a rail from a suspension file drawer. The width of space g between edges 16a and 14 should be about 0.31 to 0.79 centimeters (0.125 to 0.3125 inches), preferably about 0.55 centimeters (0.21875 inches) to accommodate most file rails. Referring to Figure 1, the file markers 10 are shown in combination with a suspension file drawer 18 placed inside a filing cabinet 19. File drawer 18 includes a base 19, a front board 20, a back board 21 , two side panels 22 and 23 and first and second parallel rails 24 and 25 extending between the front and rear panels 20 and 21 of the file drawer. The rails 24 and 25 are separated above the upper edges of the side panels 22 and 23. Such a file archive of suspension 18 is conventional. The content of the file generally designated at 26 is disposed in the file drawer 18 and generally includes hanging file folders 27 and paper sheets 28 disposed within the file folders 27. Since the file markers 10 have means for attaching to the rails 24 and 25 and can be placed infinitely along the length of the file drawer 18, the markers can be easily placed between the file folders 27 or between individual sheets of paper 28, as shown. File markers are capable of such positioning since their placement is not dictated by the content of the file.
Referring to Figures 1, 2 and 4, the file markers 10 are supported on the rail 24 by a stop edge rounded or arched 17a of the intermediate portion 17 extending between the leg edge 16a and on the edge of the body side. The stopping edge 17a is rounded to generally conform to the rounded upper edge of conventional archival rails and to allow easy sliding of archival markers along them. The height between the stopping edge 17a and the upper edge 12 of the body portion 11 is important so as not to affect the opening and closing of the file drawer, and the height should be approximately between 1.90 and 3.17 centimeters (0.75 and 1.25 inches), preferably around 2.54 centimeters (1 inch). The distance between the stopping edge 17a and the terminal end 16b of the leg portion 16 is also important so that the leg is of sufficient length to adequately hold the archival rails and is not easily disengaged. The distance d between the stopping edge and the end of the leg 16 should be approximately 1.27 to 5.08 centimeters (0.5 to 2 inches), preferably 3.81 centimeters (1.5 inches), to adequately hold the arch rails. An elongated projection 29 extends outward from the second terminal portion 14b of the edge of the side 14 and has a projection edge 29a parallel to the edge of the side 14 and the edge of the leg 16a. Referring to Figure 1, the projection edge 29a engages the inside of the side board 22 of the file drawer 18 so that the top edge 14 of the portion 11 maintains a horizontal orientation; otherwise, if the body portion 11 were allowed to strike, one of the corners of the upper edge 12 could project upward and affect the opening and closing of the file drawer 18. In a mode in which space g has a width of about 0.55 centimeters (0.21875 inches), the projection edge 29a extends beyond the side edge of body 14 with a space of approximately 0.31 centimeters (0.125 inches) to ensure an orientation at the level of the upper edge 12 of the file marker. The length 1 of the body portion 11 between the upper edge 12 and the base edge 13 should be long enough to ensure that the end portion 14b of the side body edge 14 engages with the interior of the side panels of the drawer files. To achieve these results, the length 1 is preferably between approximately 12.06 and 13.01 centimeters (4.75 and 5.125 inches). Such a dimension is also advantageous since the file marker can also be used in a horizontal orientation in conventional 3 by 5 address / phone card files. Referring to Figure 5, the file marker 10 is shown in combination with an address / telephone card file 30, such as that sold under the registered trademark ROLODEXR. As mentioned, the length of the file marker is preferably between 12.06 and 13.01 centimeters (4.75 and 5.125 inches) so that it serves the double function both as a file marker and for a suspension file drawer and as a marker for file cabinets of address cards / conventional phone 30. The width of the file marker between the edge 15 and 16c in the leg 16 is preferably at least 7.62 centimeters (3 inches), and more preferably around 8.57 inches (3.375 inches) , so that the leg 16 projects out of the contents of a conventional 3 by 5 address / telephone file. The file marker 10 can also be used to mark the position of the material removed from the so-called open shelf file. In such an application, the file marker 10 is inserted in the selected position so that the side edge of body 15 rests on the shelf supporting the files and the top edge 12 projects out of the files to mark the selected position. If desired, the flexible leg portion 16 can be used to couple material from the adjacent file by sliding the edge of the adjacent file, paper or the like between the leg portion 16 and the side edge of the body 14. Another important aspect of the invention lies in providing a set of color-coded file markers 10a, 10b, 10c, and lOd as illustrated in Figure 4. The file markers 10a, 10b, 10c and lOd are respectively shown as color-coded in red, blue, green and yellow. Providing the file markers in a color-coded set that carries at least two different colors is advantageous since different colored file markers can be provided to different employees in an office to mark the position of the removed files. Thus, when a different color file marker is assigned to each person who has access to a file, additional personnel searching for a file may determine that they have removed a file by the color of the file marker. The body portion 11, leg portion 16, and the intermediate portion 16 are preferably integrally molded of a polymeric material, such as polypropylene, so that the three portions are coplanar and have a relatively uniform thickness t of about 0.15. to 0.31 centimeters (0.0625 to 0.1250 inches). Such a thickness provides a relatively flat file marker to fit between the contents of the heavily packaged file and still provide a file marker with sufficient strength to be inserted between such heavily packaged archive contents. Although it is preferred to mold the file marker of a polymeric material such as polypropylene, it should be understood that the file marker can be manufactured in many different ways from a variety of different materials. Although in the prior specification a detailed description of a specific embodiment of the invention was established for purposes of illustration, it will be understood by those of ordinary skill in the art that many details described herein may vary considerably without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
