Description

SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR PROVIDING A PORTABLE GAME FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention is generally concerned with cardboard boxes and is specifically concerned with a cardboard box 5 that can be converted to a game board.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION To complement the advertising efforts, manufacturers and retailers can increase the sales of products to the consumer when giving promotional products. It can be easily appreciated that, to be effective, such promotional items must be attractive to the consumer and not expensive for the company. A simulated multi-player sports game is attractive to consumers. For example, many soccer fans enjoy playing a simulated soccer game that is commonly called foosball. The foosball generally recreates a soccer field that has scoring zones at each end. In addition, the objects or game pieces are assembled on offshoots and placed transversely on top of the soccer field to represent soccer players. The users rotate and slide the rods to move the game pieces with the intention of propelling a ball into the opponent's end zone. 25 Typical simulated soccer games are very large and expensive and usually only found in galleries at a cost depending on usage. Domestic versions have been developed, but they are bulky and expensive too. Disadvantageously, such domestic games absorb floor space or partial table and are not easy to temporarily tow. Therefore, consumers would appreciate a simulated sport game that is not expensive and storable. Board games have been provided as promotional items in the past. However, to remain non-expensive, games are detached from the back of product boxes, such as cereal boxes and are commonly single-player games. In addition, known promotional games and gifts do not provide the consumer as a fully usable multiplayer game. In addition, there are no folding and inexpensive table games that simulate a playing field with movable game pieces that can be controlled simultaneously by one or more players. Accordingly, there are shortcomings and disadvantages in the prior art that are solved by providing attractive and inexpensive multiplayer table games to be given as promotional items.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION The present invention overcomes the deficiencies of the prior art by providing a simulated sports game board that is not very expensive to manufacture and desirable to the consumer. The game is an excellent promotional item to increase product sales as it is preferably formed of product packaging that includes logos and other marketing information that would otherwise be discarded and that incorporates product accessories or packaging components such as game pieces. or components of the game. The invention provides a collapsible and collapsible game board made of cardboard or other suitable substrate that is easy for the consumer to assemble and store. The game pieces and other movable game board elements can also be constructed from the same substrate and / or from product accessories, such as bottle cap, article carriers and straws. An advantage of the present invention is that the games provided have a lot of game value. The consumer is encouraged to buy the related products because the promotional games are entertaining and durable. The present invention also provides a robust game that is not expensive for multiple players. In the exemplary embodiment, the invention provides a table version of the popular soccer game known as foosball. Elements of the game board such as player pieces representing soccer players, can be made available to the consumer as separable components of product packaging. In addition, a folding cardboard game board can be provided directly to consumers as a promotional item with or without cost or provided as part of the product packaging. For example, the game board can be integral to and detachable from a cardboard box. It can be appreciated that such game board would encourage consumers to collect elements of the game board and thus promote the sale of more products. Additionally, other sports and skill games may be simulated with the present invention. Generally described is a form of a folding and collapsible simulated sports game board that is formed from an appropriate substrate of foldable laminal material. The game board is easily erected and assembled and elements of the game board, in which a set of control bars are included, are attached to it. The player's pieces are attached or mounted to the control bar in such a way that the set of control rods facilitates the control of the player's pieces. The control bar suspends the player's pieces above the lower panel of the game board. The structure and configuration of the game board lends itself to being provided as part of the secondary packaging of the consumer's product, which includes but is not limited to cardboard boxes for enclosing food products or consumable beverages.
According to the exemplary embodiment, the game board is formed from a preform of a single uniform sheet of cardboard, corrugated cardboard, plastic, laminate, or any combination thereof or the like, although it is contemplated that the board of the game can be formed by multiple sheets or from a substrate that is non-uniform. The preform includes an essentially rectangular interior panel with side panels and end panels along the edges of the rectangle. Each side panel and end panel is foldable along fold lines to form side walls and end walls. Certain elements of the game board are held in place by means of attaching the elements of the game board, such as latching tabs and receiving slots coupled. For example, annotation zones are mounted to the interior panel of the game board by means of annexation. The retention tabs are apt to pass through corresponding holes or slots and be retained by lines of separation, frangible lines or any combination of cutting, half cuts, scorifications, or perforations. The side panels and end panels are folded and retained in a condition erected by means of belays to create walls on all sides of the game board. The means for securing the side panels and end panels in an erected condition may simultaneously include retaining tabs and receiving slots coupled. In the exemplary embodiment, player pieces such formed insoles such as soccer players may be made available to the consumer either separately or as part of the primary or secondary product packaging. The consumer can collect the representative players of their favorite teams by repeatedly purchasing the product. Alternatively, one or more elements of the game board such as the entire team of player pieces may be purchased by the consumer or provided to the consumer as a gift item. According to one aspect of the invention, the means for controlling the player's pieces include one or more control bar assemblies. The control bar assemblies may be rotatably and slidably attached to the side walls of the game board in such a way that they are suspended above the game board. In an exemplary embodiment, the control bar assemblies are constructed of drinking straws and plastic bottle caps. For example, beverage straws are connected end-to-end and mounted on opposite side walls of the game board. The control rod assemblies further comprise a bottle cap and cardboard plug at one end, which are assembled to form a control knob for the set of control rods and to prevent the set of control rods from slipping too far through the side wall of the game board. The cardboard plug is dimensioned to fit specifically within the threaded interior of the plastic bottle cap and includes an opening or hole through which one end of the control rod assembly is arranged in order to attach the control knob to the control bar. By this, the control knob is rotated and moved to control the player parts attached to the control bar. According to another aspect of the invention, a game ball for the consumer is provided. In the exemplary embodiment, a play ball preform includes two portions including trapezoidal fins around the perimeter of a hexagonal center section. The consumer folds and connects the tabs on the end of opposite fins to a game ball having an almost spherical shape. In other embodiments, a bottle cap is used as a play ball. After attaching the control bar assemblies, with pieces mounted on them, to the side walls of the game board and after placing the ball mounted on the game board, two or more users can simulate a soccer game by sliding and rotating the control bar assemblies or otherwise control player pieces in an attempt to propel the ball through the hole defined by the opponent's end zone. While offensive users try to advance the ball with their player pieces, defensive users try to block the advancing ball with their player pieces. By this the consumer is provided with a portable soccer game that is easily storable and provides great play value. By this, the product marketer is provided with a proportional item that is not expensive to manufacture; attractive to the consumer and can encourage additional consumer purchases. The foregoing has broadly summarized some of the aspects and elements of the present invention that should be construed as illustrative only of several potential applications of the invention. The printed side can be smoother or can be coated with known substances to prepare the surface of the cardboard packaging material of the preform 10 to be colored or otherwise to receive graphics. With respect to Figure 2, the printed side of the preform 10 of the game board is printed to resemble a playing field with annotation zone lines 22 and field divider lines 24. In alternative embodiments, the game board 10 It can be in any form, be designed and printed to resemble any sports field or game board, remain unprinted or printed with graphics of any kind. In addition, the preform 10 of the game board can be laminated or covered with a different material. For example, the preform 10 of the game board can be covered with miniature grass to resemble a putting green. As will be understood by those experienced in the art, the completion of the surface of the game P and the manner of demarcation is given only as a design choice. Returning to Figure 1, the side panels and end panels 14, 16, 18, 20 are each hingedly connected to the bottom panel 12 along a fold line 25. In the illustrated embodiment, each side panel and panel of the end 14, 16, 18, 20 further includes fold lines 26, 27. the fold lines 25, 26, 27 of each side panel and end panel 14, 16, 18, 20 are parallel to each other and define support panels 28, 29, 30. The side panels 18, 20 include rows of openings 31 that receive certain elements of the game board, as described in further detail hereinafter. Specifically, a row of openings is provided in the support panels 28, 29 of each of the side panels 18, 20. The preform 10 of the game board includes means for securing the support panels 28, 29, 30 of each. of the side panels 14, 16, 18, 20 in an erected condition, as described in further detail later herein. In the exemplary embodiment, means for securing the panels includes tongue elements 32 that are attached or integral to the outermost support panel 30 and includes slots 34 that are disposed along or otherwise adjacent to the fold lines 25. The grooves 34 correspond to the tongue elements 32, in such a way that the tongue elements 32 can be casually received in the grooves 34 to releasably secure the support panels 28, 29, 30 in an erected condition. It should be noted that the means for securing the panels can be any mechanical or chemical connection mechanism, or combination thereof, which include but are not limited to tabs, slots, fasteners, belts, glue or other adhesive, tape, Staples and the like. Similarly, the preform 10 of the game board includes means for attaching the game board elements to the lower panel 12. In the exemplary embodiment, the means for attaching the game board elements to the lower panel 12 include slots 40 which castanously receive elements. corresponding tab attached to certain elements of the game board, as described in further detail hereinafter. Alternative means for attaching the game board elements to the lower panel 12 include sailboat (R), glue or other adhesive, fasteners, belts, tape, staples and the like. Each tab element 32 is formed to include a wider distal portion 36 and a narrower neck portion 38. The distal portion 36 is wider than the width of a slot. respective 34. By this, the size and shape of the tongue element 32 and of a respective slot 34 are such that the tongue element 32 can be flexed or folded to pass through the respective slot 34 and, once the distal portion 36 of the tongue element 32 passes through the slot 34, the tongue 32 is deployed in such a manner that the distal portion 36 of the tongue member 32 prevents the tongue element 32 from being withdrawn from the slot 34. tab element 32 can be removed from slot 34 by folding or flexing the distal portion 36 of tab 32 to fit through slot 34. These securing means create an appropriately strong but removable attachment to reinforce and secure the panels. a desired configuration. The preform 10 of the game board can be erected to form a game board 70, as shown in Figure 4. Each of the side panels and end panels 14, 16, 18, 20 are folded in such a way that the Support panels 28, 29, 30 form a tubular structure having a triangular cross section. The tongue elements 32 are inserted through the slot 34 to maintain the side and end panels 14, 16, 18, 20 in an erected condition and thereby define end walls and end walls 74, 76, 78, 80, respectively, along the perimeter of the lower panel 12 of the game board 70. In this embodiment, the support panel 28, which is integral to each wall 74, 76, 78, 80, is oriented at an angle of approximately 45 °. with respect to the lower panel 12 of the game board 70 to allow a game ball to roll over the wall 74, 76, 78, 80 and then return the ball to play in the lower panel 12. However, any sidewall configuration suitable can be used in which a configuration is included wherein the support panel 28 of each wall 74, 76, 78, 80 is substantially perpendicular to the lower panel 12. In addition, side walls of different cross sections, in which are included square, rectangular, polygons and simple two-dimensional vertical walls are contemplated. As the side walls 74, 76 are erected, the openings 31 in the support panel 28 are aligned horizontally with the openings 31 in the support panel 29 and together define a support 82 of control rod assembly, as described in further detail later herein. It should be noted that a single layer panel can define a wall and a single opening in that side wall can define a control bar assembly support. Exemplary game board elements that are mounted to, supported by or otherwise used in conjunction with the game board 70 in order to play a game are now described. Figure 3 shows a modality of a preform of. annotation zone 50. The annotation zone preform 50 can be fabricated from any appropriate substrate as defined above with reference to the preform 10 of the game board. The exemplary annotation zone preform 50 is generally H-shaped and comprises two foldable annotation zones 52 which are separable along a separation line 54. each annotation zone 52 includes a front panel 56 having a cut C and side panels 58 which are hingedly connected to the front panel 56 along the fold line 62. Means for attaching each annotation zone 52 to the lower panel 12 of the game board 70 include tabs 60 projecting from the lower edge of the panel. each of the side panels 58. Each annotation zone 52 can be erected and mounted to the game board 70 as described in Figure 4. The annotation zone 52 is erected by folding each side panel 58 along lines of fold 62 such that the side panels 58 are substantially perpendicular to the front panel 56. The tabs 60 are inserted into respective slots 40 to detachably mount each annotation zone. 52 to the lower panel 12 of the game board 70. Thus, the means for attaching the annotation zone 52 to the game board 70 include the tabs 60 and the slots 40. Referring temporarily to Figures 11 and 12, the exemplary embodiment is described in the context of a package including a cardboard box 300 enclosing articles that are grouped within the package by article holders 90, 110, 120. The exemplary cardboard box includes an upper wall 302, end walls 304, 306, side walls 308, 310, and a bottom wall 312. The preform 10 is integral to and separable from the carton 300, being formed of at least a portion of at least one of the walls of the carton 302, 304 , 306, 308, 310, 312. In the exemplary embodiment, the lower wall 312 of the carton becomes, in the lower panel 12 of the game board 70 after it is separated. Similarly, a lower portion of each of the end walls 304, 306 and sidewalls 308, 310 are converted to the end panels 18, 20 and side panels 14, 16, respectively. Those skilled in the art will recognize that the preform 10 is separable from the rest of the walls of the carton 300 by any combination of separation lines, cutting lines and the like. It is also contemplated that the carton 300 need not include all the walls mentioned above, but rather, the preform 10 can be formed from any of the walls 302, 304, 306, 308, 310, 312 or any combination appropriate of them. Each article carrier 90, 110, 120 secures a subset of article in a desired configuration for easy assortment, and for convenience. For example, the cardboard box 300 can enclose 24 bottles of beverage B, which are additionally grouped by 8 article carriers that each insure 3 B bottles. Thus, the consumer can easily separate 3 B bottles at a time, consume the same. drinks and save the items that are usable for the game, as described later in this. The exemplary article carrier is a flexible neck receiver collar with a carrier tongue or handle. It should be noted that groups of articles can be packaged by an article carrier without being further grouped by the carton and that the items in the carton can not be grouped by an article carrier. Figures 5-7 are plan views of exemplary embodiments of article carriers 90, 110, 120. Each article carrier 90, 110, 120 includes a handle portion and a main portion. The handle portion includes a handle opening defining a handle flap. The main portion is a collar that includes a plurality of article receiving openings 92. By this, the article receiving openings 92 can receive articles such as bottles B, and the handle opening can be coupled to carry the articles with the article carrier 90, 110, 120. In the illustrated embodiments, the article carriers 90 110, 120 are constructed from the same substrate as the preform 10 of the game board. However, it is contemplated that an article carrier can be constructed of any strong material sufficient to srt normal use. It should be noted that the present invention is not limited to the illustrated article carrier. Rather, the scope of the invention includes any known article carrier in which an element of the game board can be defined. Thus, the size, shape and elements of the carriers of illustrated articles can be altered, such as for carrying articles of different shapes and / or sizes. In the exemplary embodiment, the separable game board elements are defined in the main panel and in the handle portion of the article carriers 90, 110, 120 by separation lines. The handle flap of each of the article carriers 90, 110, 120 includes a plug 94. The plug is defined by a separation line 98 and includes an opening 96 which is disposed in the approximate center of the plug 94. In the exemplary embodiment, the opening 96 is sized to receive the end of a control rod, as described in further detail hereinafter. The main panel of each of the article carriers 90, 110, 120 includes additional game elements. The item carriers 90, 110 include player pieces 100 which are defined by lines of separation 99. The flaps 102 are located on opposite sides of each player piece 100. Each flap 102 includes a receiving aperture 104 that facilitates assembly separable from each respective player part 100 to a control bar 150, as described in further detail hereinafter. In the exemplary mode, each of the player pieces represents a generic soccer player who commonly plays offense or defense on the field or a goalkeeper who protects the end zone. The main panel of the article carrier 120 includes a game ball preform 110 which is defined by a separation line 112. The game ball preform 110 is separable along the separation line 112 and can be erected to form a game ball 124, as shown in Figure 8. Each portion 122a, 122b of the game ball preform 110 includes a hexagonal center section 126 and perimeter sections 128 that are hingedly connected to each edge of the hexagonal center section 126. along fold lines 130. The perimeter sections 128 are substantially trapezoidal in shape and the shorter edge of the parallel edges of each perimeter section 128 is hingedly connected to the hexagonal center section 126 along the line of fold 130. In addition, the connecting wings 132 are hingedly connected to the longer of the two parallel edges of a certain perimeter section 128. For, eri When the play ball 124 is rotated, the perimeter sections 128 are folded along respective fold lines 130 at an angle of about 45 degrees from the plane of the hexagonal center section 126, such that the angular edges of the sections of adjacent perimeters 128 come together to create two concave shapes which, when joined together with the connecting wings 132, form a gaming ball 124 (shown in Figure 8) having an approximately spherical shape. The connecting wings 132 can be fixedly attached, by mechanical or chemical means to clamp to the surface of a respective perimeter section 128 to form the play ball 124. - Alternatively, the consumer may be given a pre-assembled play ball or may use any size ball appropriate or another game piece, such as a bottle cap. It should be noted that the player pieces or other game elements of the board that are printed or otherwise defined on the item carriers and further defined by lines of separation can be of any configuration that facilitates the game described in the present or the like . In addition, the board game elements are not limited to being formed in and separated from an article carrier. Rather, in other alternative embodiments, player pieces may be provided to a consumer on a sheet of a substrate that is not an article carrier or the player pieces may be provided independently, having already been separated from a sheet of substrate. For example, player pieces can be formed from a fixed ear or label or otherwise associated with an item or with the carton or player pieces can be integral to a wall of the primary package that wraps the product consumable in itself. Player pieces can be designed to resemble or represent famous players or generic competitors. In addition, the game pieces can be decorated with specific equipment colors or decorated with any optional decorative element. As used herein, the terms "players", "competitors" and "equipment" are used to broadly include competitors or non-human characters such as animals, objects and motor vehicles that can play or compete. In the exemplary embodiment, the game board elements, which include the annotation zones, plugs, players and balls are separable from the surrounding substrate along separation lines. However, in alternative embodiments, the user may remove these items from the surrounding substrate with any cutting device, such as scissors, a blade or the like. In addition, an article carrier may comprise fewer or more pieces of the game than those illustrated. Figure 9 is a perspective view of a control bar assembly 140 that is assembled from game board elements. It should be noted that the game board elements used to form the control rod assembly 140 may include or be formed from any combination of primary or secondary packaging material or product accessories. In the exemplary embodiment, the control rod assembly 140 includes multiple attachment drinking holders 142, 144 that define a control bar 150 and includes a control knob 146 at one end of the control bar 150. The control knob 146 is mounted from a lid 94 and a bottle cap 148. Specifically, the plug piece 94 is inserted into the concave threaded area of a bottle cap 148 to form the control knob 146. Drinking beverages 142, 144 are attached to end to end to form a control bar 150. More specifically, the open end of a first straw 142 receives the compressed end of a second straw 144 to create an extended control rod 150. One end of the control rod 150 is inserted to the plug opening 96 to releasably secure the control knob 146 to the control rod 150 and thereby form the control rod assembly 140. It should be noted that, in alternative embodiments, the control bar assembly can be created using any structure that defines an axis and that is configured to translate laterally along that axis and rotate about that axis. Figure 10 is a perspective view of a fully assembled embodiment of a set 200 in accordance with the present invention. The game pieces 100 are detachably appended to the respective control rod assemblies 140, by folding the flaps 102, such that the openings 104 align and by threading the control rod 140 through each of the aligned openings 104. The control rod assemblies 140 are inserted through the openings. which define brackets 82 of the control rod assembly such that the control rods 150 are suspended above the lower panel 12 of the game board 70. By this, the control rods 150 extend between side walls 74, 76 and the control knob 146 prevents the control rod assembly 140 from sliding out of the control rod assembly supports 82 as the control rod 150 is translated when in use with the assembled set 200. To play In the illustrated mode game, each user can put into operation or otherwise move and rotate the control bar assembly 140 in an effort to move the game ball 124 through an area of annotation 52. Any appropriate number of user may put into operation one or more of control rod assemblies 140. For example, eight users can operate a control bar assembly 140 each. With respect to the illustrated soccer game, a user puts into operation three bars with the generic player pieces 100 and an outermost bar or the bar that is adjacent to an annotation zone 52, with a piece of goalkeeper player 100. A distal end of each of the generic player parts 100 extends from the axis defined by the control bar 150 such that when a user rotates the control rod assembly 140, the far end of the parts 100 of The player can push or "kick" the game ball 124, for example into the scoring zone 52. The control bar assembly 140 can be moved to place one of the generic player pieces 100 in order to attempt to propel the ball. of play or block the projection of an opponent of the game ball 124. In alternative modes, the number of sets of control rods and the number of game pieces may be any number or combination for to play the game described in the present or a similar game. For example, other sports, including but not limited to soccer, ice hockey, grass hockey, tennis, ping-pong, basketball or the like, where opposing players or teams defend opposing end zones may be simulated with the present invention. In addition, sports or games that require opposing players or equipment to track or demonstrate skill by manipulating media to control player pieces, including but not limited to billiards or carom, curling, bocee and the like can be simulated with the present invention. As will be understood by those skilled in the art, additional alternative game modes may require alternative means to control player pieces that may or may not require mounting on the game board. It is contemplated that the length of the bar 150 is sufficient to allow each game piece to be moved from one side to the other, by pushing or pulling along the bar 150, in order to cover a certain portion of the playing field. . The present invention has been described and shown in relation to a particular embodiment which is intended in all aspects to be illustrative rather than restrictive. Those skilled in the art will recognize that the present invention is capable of many modifications and variations without deviating from the scope of the invention. Also, as used herein, directional references such as "upper", "base", "background", "extreme", "side", "internal", "external", "lower", "medium", " "center", "front", and "rear" do not limit the respective panels of the cardboard box and game board to such orientation, but serve only to distinguish these structural characteristics from others. A) Yes, the scope of the present invention is described by the claims appended hereto and supported by the foregoing. As used herein, the term "primary packaging" refers to packaging that immediately envelops a product and is expected to provide the majority of the moisture / vapor / grease resistance and barrier necessary to safeguard its purity, potency and integrity and "secondary packaging" refers to an outer package to which the primary package is placed, for example a folded cardboard box, a folded bladder card, a display cardboard box or a packaging container. The secondary packaging can provide additional barrier properties, but its main function is to protect the product during packaging and distribution, to facilitate transportation and portation, to provide essential information and attractive retail display and especially with high end products for project a distinctive brand image.
