Description

TOOTHBRUSH Background of the Invention The present invention is directed to a toothbrush primarily manually held which includes a handle and a head. With manual toothbrushes, the cleaning elements are mounted on the head such as bunches of bristles. When a toothpaste is applied to the cleaning elements the user inserts the head into the mouth and brushes the teeth in a known manner.
Conventionally a head of a toothbrush is a construction of the piece which is elongated and symmetrical in shape on each side of the longitudinal center line. Generally the head includes fixed bristles that extend outward from a surface of the head. Various attempts have been made to provide flexibility to the bristles by allowing the movement of the bristles during the toothbrush, a number of patents, describe the use of a ball or canister seal mounted on the toothbrush head for allow brushing the teeth. U.S. Patent No. 5, 491, 866, for example, describes an articulated toothbrush in which a pivot joint connects the head and the handle. All the bristles are mounted on the pivotable head. U.S. Patent No. 3,398,421, discloses a toothbrush wherein the head includes a pair of cutters each of which is held by a ball member; alternatively, the single ball member is used for all carriers. No other sows are included in the head. A similar approach is described in the patent extracts of Japanese publication No. 06327517.
Another approach is to have a plurality of individually mounted groups of bristles secured to a respective ball, such as described in U.S. Pat. No. 2, 263, 802 and in the Russian patent SU 1752336. The head does not include fixed bristles.
A similar approach is used in a hairbrush described in U.S. Patent No. 4,114,222.
U.S. Patent No. 4,654,922 discloses a toothbrush with a universal joint for two segments located outside the head with the joints being disposed in a longitudinal direction. Therefore, the head currently includes the two separate sections which extend outwards. The head itself can also be attached to the handle by a ratchet ball.
U.S. Patent No. 6,088,870 discloses a toothbrush having flexible mounted bristles wherein the bristles are mounted in an elastic net.
Synthesis of the Invention An object of this invention is to provide a toothbrush wherein the toothbrush head includes cleaning elements, such as bristles mounted on a ball joint to provide an extra degree of movement, in addition to the cleaning elements. fixed.
In accordance with this invention, an elongated head is attached to one end of the handle. The head has an outer surface from which a plurality of cleaning elements extends, the head includes an additional set of cleaning elements mounted on a ball joint located generally perpendicular to the outer surface so that these cleaning elements can be moved in several directions, including, along the longitudinal axis of the head.
In a preferred practice of this invention, the ball joint is located below the outer surface of the head. The ball joint includes an outwardly extending rod which in its initial position is perpendicular to the outer surface of the head. A carrier for the cleaning elements is mounted to the rod. The stem is surrounded by the elastomer material to push the stem back to its original position.
The ball joint can be mounted to the head as a separate component which is placed in place or can be joined in the head cavity by an elastic and flexible elastomer. The ball joint can be assembled through an insert molding process.

Detailed description The present invention is directed to toothbrushes which are inserted in the mouth during use. Even when the toothbrushes illustrate a toothbrush which is operated manually, it should be understood that the teachings of this invention can be incorporated into electric toothbrushes or that they operate with other energy where a part of the toothbrush head teeth, is for example, oscillated such as by means of the type of drive illustrated in U.S. Patent No. 5,625,916, all the details of which are incorporated herein by reference thereto. Such a toothbrush can include at least one oscillating or rotating section and will also include at least one section wherein the cleaning elements are mounted on a ball joint as described below.
Figures 1-3 show a toothbrush 10 according to this invention. As shown there, the toothbrush 10 includes a handle 12 and a head 14. The head 14 includes a fixed section 16 having an outer surface 18 from which the cleaning elements 19 and 20 extend. The head 14 also includes a section located near the handle 12 which includes a ball joint 22 having the cleaning elements 24. The use of the ball joint 22 introduces an extra degree of movement other than the flexing of the bristle yarns where the bristles are used as cleaning elements.
The ball joint 22 can be mounted on the head 14 in any suitable manner. Figure 14, for example, illustrates a receptacle 26 located in a recess 28 on the underside of the head 14, which is the side opposite the outer surface. The ball joint 22 includes a neck or rod 30 connected to a carrier 32 with the cleaning elements 24 mounted on the carrier 32. The rod 30 may be surrounded by an elastomeric material 34 to fill the opening in the head 14 necessary to accommodate the ball joint while still allowing the universal type movement of the ball joint 22. As shown in Figure 4, the bottom of the carrier 32 is concave to complement the convex outer surface of the elastomer 34 on the head 14 for facilitating the pivoting of the carrier 32. As shown, the ball joint 22, the rod and the carrier 32 are integral.
Figure 5 illustrates the ball gasket 22 in its condition during use where the ball gasket 22 has pivoted in a direction toward the handle 12.
One advantage of the incorporation of the elastomeric material such as the elastomeric material 34 or the elastic pad 38 (FIG. 6) around the rod 30 of the ball joint 22 is that the elastomer 34 or 38 provides extra movement in the return of the joint of ball 22 to its initial rest position where the rod 30 is generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis or the outer surface of the head 1.
Figures 6-7 illustrate an alternate way of assembling ball joint 22. As shown there, a receptacle 36 which is generally spherical in shape is formed in head 1. An elastic pad which is formed of elastomeric 38 is mounted on the receptacle 36. The carrier 32 has dependent ribs 40 which press against the pad 38. During assembly, the ball joint 22 is gripped in place through a central hole in the central pad. When the ball joint 22 is in the receptacle 36 it is in the ribs 40 contact the pad 38. Instead of forming the ball joint structure as a separate component, the ball joint can be incorporated in the head 14 a through an insert molding process.
In both of the embodiments of Figures 1-5 and Figures 6-7, the ball joint 22 is located in a recessed form below the outer surface of the head 14. The carrier of the cleaning element 32 is positioned above the outer surface and mounted for a pivoting movement by its connection to the rod 30. The rod 30 is surrounded by the elastomeric material 34, another elastomeric pad 38 for pressing the rod 30 to its initial position perpendicular to the outer surface of the head 14 .
Although Figures 1-3 illustrate the ball joint 22 and its cleaning elements 24, as being located between the fixed section 16 and the handle 12, other arrangements are possible such as by having an additional fixed section on the side opposite of the ball joint 22 by having the ball seal located at the remote remote end and the fixed section located between the ball joint and the handle. Similarly, even when Figures 1-3 illustrate a single ball joint, the invention can be practiced with multiple ball joints.
As best illustrated in FIG. 3, the cleaning elements 20 are located along the periphery of the fixed section 16 in a generally U-shaped pattern. The cleaning elements 19 are located within the U-shape. Cleaning elements 19 can be shorter than cleaning elements 20 to create a cup-like outer surface of the ends of cleaning elements 19 and 20 to help retain the toothpaste on the cleaning elements. The cleaning elements 19 may be bunches of bristles, while the cleaning elements 20 may be bristles of molding technology inside.
If desired, as shown in Figure 2, the outer surface 18 of the head 14 may include a concave depression 46 for accommodating a complementary shaped surface 44 of the ball joint structure. Alternatively, the outer surface 18 may have a convex protrusion which can accommodate a concave portion complementary to the ball joint structure, as shown in FIG. 4. These complementary surfaces facilitate smooth movement of the ball joint carrier. 32 As shown in Figures 4-5, the outer surface of the head 14 includes a recess 29 through which the rod 30 extends. The shape and dimension of the recess 29 controls or limits the degree of pivoting that can be performed by the members. cleaning elements 24. In this aspect, wherein the head 14 is generally formed of a conventional hard plastic material the edges of the recess will function as a stop to limit the degree of pivoting action of the ball joint structure. Figure 5, for example, shows the ball joint structure pivoted almost to the limit of what will result where with the continuous movement of the rod 30 it makes contact with the edge of the recess 29.
As shown in Figure 6, the head 14 includes a recess 43 in which the pad 38 is mounted. The degree of pivoting allowed for the ball joint structure will be controlled by the size and dimension of the various components. Therefore, the outer surface of the head 14 will prevent an additional pivoting action of the ball joint 22 where the carrier 32 makes contact with the outer surface 18.
As illustrated in Figures 4-5 the elastomer material 34 completely fills the open area in the recess 29, effectively functioning as a pressurized structure for pushing the ball joint 22 back to its initial position where it is generally perpendicular to the axis longitudinal of the head 14.
Although Figure 3 illustrates the cleaning elements 20 as being a single row of bunches of bristles, it will be understood that the cleaning elements can be arranged in a plurality of rows. What is desired in the illustrated embodiment is that there is an open area to accommodate the cleaning elements 19.
Any suitable form of the cleaning elements can be used, the cleaning elements 19, 20 and 24. The term "cleaning elements" is intended to be used in a generic sense which may include massage elements or conventional fiber bristles or other forms of cleaning elements such as elastomeric walls or fingers arranged in a circular cross-sectional shape or any type of desired shape including straight portions or sinusoidal portions. Where the bristles are used, the bristles can be assembled into bundle blocks or sections by extending into the appropriate openings in the bundle blocks so that the base of the bristles is mounted inside or below the bundle of bundles.
It should be understood that the specific illustration of the cleaning elements is merely for example purposes. The invention can be practiced with various combinations of the same or different configurations of the cleaning element (such as stapled bristles or molding technology within) and / or with the same cleaning or bristle materials (such as bristles). nylon, spiral bristles, rubber bristles etc.) Similarly, even when Figure 2 illustrates the cleaning elements as being generally perpendicular to the outer surface 18 of the head 14 some or all of the cleaning elements may be angled at various angles to the outer surface of the head 14. It is therefore possible to select the combination of the cleaning element configurations, the materials and the orientations to achieve the specific intended results to deliver oral health benefits additional, such as improved teeth polishing, bleached teeth and / or gum massage.
Although Figures 1-7 illustrate a manually operated toothbrush, the invention can also be practiced wherein the head includes one or more movable sections elliptically operated or with other energy carrying the cleaning elements. Such a movable section may oscillate in a rotational manner or may "oscillate linearly in a longitudinal direction with respect to the longitudinal axis of the head or may oscillate linearly in a transverse or lateral direction with respect to the longitudinal axis of the head." The movable section may oscillate inward or outward in an inward and outward direction of the outer surface of the head. The movable section can oscillate back and forth with respect to the outer surface of the head. The movable section can rotate continuously therein. direction, rather than oscillating, any suitable drive mechanism can be used to impart the desired movement to the moving section, where plural moving sections are used, all moving sections can have the same type and direction of movement, different combinations can be used. movements.
Figure 8 illustrates a toothbrush 10? which includes an electrically driven mobile section or disk 50 having the cleaning elements. The movable section 50 can be rotationally oscillated such as by using the type of drive mechanism shown in U.S. Patent 5,625,916 or it can be moved in and out using the type of drive mechanism shown in the U.S. patent. redispatch No. 35, 941 all the details of both patents are incorporated herein by reference. Alternatively, other types of drive mentioned above can move the section 50 in other ways and directions. Although Figure 8 shows the movable section 50 as being at the distal end on the head, the movable section or sections can be located at any desired location on the head.
It should be apparent that the brush 10 or 10A provides a head where there is an extra degree of movement for the cleaning elements. This extra degree of movement is achieved by providing the cleaning elements on a ball joint structure in a manner such that the cleaning elements can move freely in virtually any direction from their initial non-use position.
