Abstract

A feminine sanitary protection device includes an outer cover containing a panty shield and a vaginal insertion device. The outer cover and the panty shield are trifolded over the vaginal insertion device, and joining elements join the side sections of the outer cover together. There are frangible lines in the side sections for separating portions of the outer cover in order to provide access to the panty shield and vaginal insertion device. The method of making the feminine sanitary protection device includes providing a continuously moving layer of material, forming frangible lines in the side sections of the material, applying a joining element in each of the side sections of the material, placing a plurality of panty shields on the layer of material, forming a plurality of individual panty shields and respective individual portions of the layer of material, and then folding each individual portion of the layer of material and its panty shield together.

Description

TROPICAL FOR THE HEALTH PROTECTION OF THE WOMAN WHO TIEI ^ AN OUTER COVER WITH PERFORATED LINES AND METHOD TO DO THE SAME BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to a device for the sanitary protection of women that protects a wearer by absorbing and containing menstrual fluids and other exudates from the body as well as a method to do so. More specifically, this invention relates to a device for the sanitary protection of women which provides essentially complete sanitary protection, easy handling and discretion in the appearance of packaging as well as a method for making the same.
Absorbent articles are designed to absorb body fluids including menstrual fluids and can come in different functional designs. In a design category, sanitary napkins are used externally around the pudenda area and are designed primarily for heavy flow. In another category, panty liners or panty shields are thin products that are worn externally around the pudenda area and are designed for light flow. In yet another category, the plugs are designed to be placed internally «Jjj¡uMriM - J-¿j» ^ .. ^ t l, mt F? ^ FFFFSál? va of the vagina.
Sanitary towels can have a high absorbent capacity with either a thick or thin absorbent element. However, the compressive forces of the thighs of the wearer and of the pudendal region during any physical movement, such as walking, can cause the sanitary pad to move from an original position that protects the vulva area. After a relatively short period of time, 10 The sanitary napkin can move out of the vaginal orifice. The movement of the wearer, particularly vigorous movement such as rapid walking or running, can also cause discomfort such as by rubbing or irritation in the sensitive vulva area. 15 In addition to the concerns of the movement of the sanitary napkin and the discomfort, a concern of the high degree of awareness of the toweling is present. Some thick sanitary napkins have an appearance of 20 high profile when viewed through the wearer's outer garments. Sanitary napkins can be very evident when worn with fitted fitting clothing including loose pants, body suits, swimming suits or close fitting or similarly thin outer garments. 25 Pant lining or panty shields have been developed for light or low menstrual flows.
SJ & t fe- :. i Some panty liners or panty shields have the same concerns associated with sanitary napkins, even though their thin profile makes them more flexible, less noticeable in appearance, and generally more comfortable than bulky sanitary napkins. However, thin profile panty liners or thin profile panty shields may have a disadvantage in the area of performance of the absorbent capacity.
The plugs are used internally within the vaginal canal to intercept the body fluid. Sometimes the plugs may not work completely to prevent filtering due to the radial expansion of the plug inside the vaginal canal that does not form a perfect seal. Notwithstanding this without such radial expansion and swelling of the plug within the vaginal canal, the plug also does not serve as a fully reliable sanitary protection device.
In an attempt to refer to the above mentioned problems, a sanitary napkin or a pant liner is wound around a stopper or similar device and then inserted into a bag. However, additional problems arise associated with a pant liner or towel wrapped around a plug or other similar device. One of these problems is that the towel or the pant lining can tend to roll up after the removal of the bag, making it more difficult if not impossible, the adhesion the. Rolled towel or pant lining rolled over an undergarment.
Another problem associated with the pant liner or the rolled towel is the loss of comfort and absorbency due to the undesired shape of a rolled or partially wrapped towel or pant liner.
Yet another problem associated with the pant liner or the rolled towel is the potential loss of the engraving pattern on the cover or the loss of some other covering feature.
SYNTHESIS OF THE INVENTION In response to the difficulties and problems discussed in the prior art, a device for the sanitary protection of women has been discovered as well as a method for making such a device.
In one form of the present invention there is provided a device for the sanitary protection of women comprising an outer cover having a central longitudinal axis and including an upper edge, a lower edge, a pair of side edges, a first side part between one of the lateral edges and the central longitudinal axis, and a second lateral part between the other of the ¡Fatt «n Ab * ~ A4¿ já ^ í« «J * & ^ ti ^ lateral edges and the central longitudinal axis. A shield for panties is placed on the outer cover between the first side part and the second side part. A first frangible line is in the first side part, and a second frangible line is in the second side part. The outer cover and the panty shield are tri-folded.
In another form of the present invention there is provided a device for sanitary protection of women comprising an outer cover having a central longitudinal axis and including an upper edge, a bottom edge, a pair of lateral edges, and a first part lateral between one of the lateral edges and the central longitudinal axis, and a second lateral part between the other of the lateral edges and the central longitudinal axis. A panty shield is placed on the outer cover and the outer cover and pant lining are folded together. There is a mechanism in the first side part and in the second side part to remove at least a part of the first side part and at least a part of the second side part from the outer cover.
In yet another aspect of the present invention there is provided a method for making a device for women's health protection comprising the steps of (a) providing a continuously moving layer of material that includes a pair of side edges and a pair of parts laterals, (b) forming a frangible line in each of the lateral portions, (c) applying a joining element to each of the lateral portions, (d) placing a plurality of panty shields at spaced apart intervals on the layer of continuously moving material, (e) forming a plurality of shields for individual panties and the respective individual portions of the material layer, and (f) folding each individual part of the material layer and its panty shield together.
In yet another aspect of the present invention there is provided a method for making a device for women's health protection comprising the steps of (a) providing a continuously moving layer of material including a pair of side edges and a pair of parts side, (b) forming a frangible line on each of the side portions, (c) placing a plurality of panty shields at spaced apart intervals on the continuously moving material layer, (d) forming a plurality of shields for individual panties and respective individual parts of the material layer, and (e) folding each individual part of the material layer and its panty shield together.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION The device for sanitary protection of the woman of the present invention provides a panty liner or panty shield bent over one or more vaginal insertion devices containing absorbent or medical devices for ease of handling, use and proper disposal. The term "bent" refers, by way of example only, to C-bending or tri-bending as illustrated in Figure 3. The term "bent over" or variations thereof means that the liner or shield has, for example , the stopper placed inside the folds. The term "device for vaginal insertion" refers to a vaginal insert or a vaginal insert applicator. By "vaginal insert" is meant, by way of example only, a vaginal medicinal plug or insert such as a vaginal suppository. By "vaginal insert applicator" is meant, by way of example only, a tampon applicator or a medical vaginal insert applicator such as a vaginal suppository applicator.
The device of the present invention provides a more discreet, convenient and portable option than carrying a shield for panties and a device for vaginal insertion separately. A bag, made with the biodegradable and / or non-biodegradable materials, serves to protect the shield for panties and the device for vaginal insertion before use and acts as a packaging agent. The present invention also provides efficiencies in material and manufacturing costs, and ease of handling by the consumer.
An advantage of the present invention is that it conveniently contains the products that a woman requires to feel fresh and completely protected from stains on her undergarments or adjacent clothes. The present invention also provides a woman with an almost zero chance to experience staining on her undergarments when these products or devices are used together.
Another advantage of the present invention is that it is more discreet and convenient than carrying two or more separate products. Therefore, a woman does not need to go out and buy two or more separate products, saving both money and time. Neither does she need to take them separately, and make sure that when the time comes to use them that all the separate products are still available. The bag keeps these products fresh and protected from contamination. The bag also provides a means for properly arranging the pant liner or the panty shield and the device for insertion vaginal Referring now to the drawings, the common elements of the drawings are mentioned using the same identification numbers.
Referring now to Figures 1-3, a device for the sanitary protection of women 10 of the present invention includes an outer cover 12, a shield for panties 14, and a vaginal insertion device, such as a plug 16 including a cord of withdrawal 18. The shield for panties 14 represents a sanitary napkin, a panty liner, or any other similar item designed to be worn by a woman. The shield for panties 14, is illustrated in Figure 1, and has an hourglass shape, but it is understood that it may have any suitable shape such as an oval shape, straight side, race track or the like. A central longitudinal axis XX may both represent the longitudinal centerline for the outer cover 12 and a shield for panties 14. The cap 16 is illustrated as being placed on a panty shield 14 in an orientation generally perpendicular to that of a central longitudinal axis. XX.
The outer cover 12 includes an upper edge 20, a bottom edge 22, and a pair of side edges 24 and 26 that extend between the edges 20 and 22.
The lining of the outer cover 12 is generally rectangular, but may have any other desired shape, such as an oval shape, a racetrack shape, or the like. For ease of manufacture, the outer cover 12 is generally rectangular in shape. The outer cover 12 further includes a first side section 28 extending between the upper edge 20 and the lower edge 22, and from the side edge 24 to the central longitudinal axis X-X. Similarly, a second lateral section 30 extends between the upper edge 20 and the lower edge 22, and from the lateral edge 26 to the central longitudinal axis X-X. Within the first side section 28 is a first connecting element 32 and a first frangible line 34. The first frangible line 34 is located between the first connecting element 32 and the central longitudinal axis X-X. Similarly, the second side section 30 includes a second link 36 and a second frangible line 38. The second frangible line 38 is between the second link member 36 and the central longitudinal axis X-X. For economy purposes, since the first side section 28 with the first link 32 and the first frangible line 34 is identical to the second side part 30 with a second link 36 and a second frangible line 38, only one description of the first side section 28, of the first connecting element 32, and of the first frangible line -34 will be made. It is understood that then this same description will be applicable to the second lateral section 30, the second joining element 36 and the second frangible line 38.
The first frangible line 34 provides a means or mechanism for removing at least a portion of a first side section 28 from the outer cover 12. The specific purpose for these means or mechanisms for removing a portion of the outer cover 12 will be explained by here on. Therefore, the purpose of the first frangible line 34 usually allows part of the outer cover 12 between the first frangible line 34 and the side edge 24 to be removed or torn together with the first frangible line 34. The frangible line 34 may, for example, being provided by partially cutting or otherwise slimming through the layer of material from which the outer cover 12 is made, may be provided by a selected pattern of perforations, or may be provided by a desired pattern of fatigue weakening -tension of the outer cover 12, or similar. As illustrated, the frangible line 34 is provided by a line of perforations in which there may be 2-10 perforations per linear inch.
A first connecting element 32 can be any suitable means or mechanism for joining the respective parts of the outer cover 12 together, as well as explaining in greater detail what has happened here. For example, the first joining element 32 can be an adhesive applied along the first side section 28, a thermal bonding line, an ultrasonic bonding line, or any other suitable means or mechanisms for attaching the outer cover 12 together . Whether Ld.Jt .., j, XA? ^. ~ I -E ...
For the purposes of economics and manufacturing deficiency, it is desired to first attach the element 32 to be removed, and the means or mechanism for attaching parts of the outer cover 12 can also be provided by the first frangible line 34 if this first line frangible 34 is used in place of the first attachment element 32, this will serve both purposes to provide a joining of portions of the outer cover 12 together, and in addition to remove at least a portion of the side section 28.
Referring now to Figure 2, the device for the sanitary protection of women 10 of Figure 1 is illustrated in a perspective and exploded view. The panty shield 14 generally comprises a liquid permeable cover 40, an absorbent means 42, a liquid impervious separator 44 and a release strip 46 that is removably adhered to the separator 44 by the release strip adhesive 48. The plug 16, represents a type of vaginal insertion device, and is also illustrated as being placed on the cover 40 of the panty shield 14. However, it should be understood that the panty shield 14 can be put upside down so that the cap 16 must then be placed on the release strip 46 and the separator 44. If desired, the release strip 46 can be removed, and the outer cover 12 can then serve the same purpose as the release strip 46, which is to protect the adhesive from the release strip 48 of the contamination before the fastening of the shield for panties 14 to the user's undergarment.
Referring now to Figure 5, a panty shield 14 is illustrated with a device for different vaginal insertion, namely a plug applicator tube 50 containing a plug, only the withdrawal cord 18 being illustrated, and a plunger 52. Both the plug applicator tube 50 and the plunger 52 are placed on a panty shield 14 and are oriented to a central longitudinal axis in the same manner as the plug 16 in Figure 1.
Referring to Figure 6, another type of vaginal insertion device is illustrated in the form of a vaginal suppository 54 placed on a panty shield 14 in a manner similar to that of the plug 16 of Figure 1.
The intent of Figures 5 and 6 is to illustrate that various types of vaginal insertion devices can be associated with a panty shield 14 and outer cover 12, such as to form a device for the sanitary protection of women of the present invention.
Turning now primarily to Figures 3 and 4, the device for the sanitary protection of women 10 of Figure 1 is illustrated in a partially tri-folded manner. Even when a tri-fold is desired, other folds are contemplated by the present invention, such as the C-fold. The outer cover 12 and the pant liner 14 are folded together along the fold lines 56 and 58, thereby forming the fold panel 60, the panel fold 62 and the base panel 64. By continuing the process or the tri-bend step, the first joint element 32 joins parts of the outer cover 12 together. Specifically, when the fold panel 60 is folded completely down, as seen in Figure 3, and when the fold panel 62 is completely folded down, the part of the outer cover 66 of the fold panel 60 is adhered to. the outer cover portion 70 of the base panel 64, and the outer cover portion 68 of the fold panel 62 is adhered to the outer cover portion 66 of the fold panel 60. In a similar manner, the second attachment element 36 joins the second lateral section 30, thereby producing the device for sanitary protection of the woman 10 with the bag 13 illustrated in figure 4. In this final folded form illustrated in figure 4, the first frangible line 34 is generally in alignment overlapping with itself, as shown in Figure 4. In a similar manner, the second frangible line 38 is also generally in an overlapping alignment with itself.
In use, a user takes the device for the sanitary protection of the woman 10, illustrated in figure 4, grabs, for example, the first lateral section 28, and separates or tears a part of it from the outer cover 12 as long of the frangible line 34. Similarly, a part of the second side section 38 will then be removed from the outer cover 12 along the second frangible line 38. Since both the connecting elements 32 and 36 (Figure 1) are between their respective outer cover side edges 24 and 26 and the central longitudinal axis XX, when the side sections 28 and 30 are removed, so are the connecting elements 32 and 36, thus allowing the outer cover 12 and the shield for panties 14 be unfolded. The panty shield 14 is then removed and, if used, the release strip 46 is removed from the separator 44 so that the panty shield 14 can be adhered to the undergarment.
Due to the tri-folded shape of the panty shield 14, several advantages are created. One of these is the elimination of the rolling tendency associated with those prior art sanitary napkins or panty shields that are wound around a stopper or other similar device. By removing the tri-folded panty shield 14, it can be easily smoothed along the fold lines 56 and 58, thereby resuming their desired shape and allowing the panty shield to be easily adhered to an undergarment. Another advantage with the present invention is that the tri-folded panty shield 14 does not decrease comfort or absorbency in the Z direction, which is associated with those prior attempts with a panty liner or rolled towel.
Yet another advantage with the present invention is that the tri-folded panty shield 14 will not lose its engraving or other surface characteristics, which may occur with those previous attempts using a panty liner or rolled towel.
The outer cover 12 can be made of any suitable material, and is desirably composed of a plastic material such as polyethylene or polypropylene. However, this may be composed of other materials such as polyethylene oxide (PEO), polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH), polycaprolactone (PCL), paper, or nonwoven material such as meltblown / meltblown material. The outer cover 12, as illustrated in Figure 1, is larger in size than the panty shield 14. In a rectangular form, the outer cover 12 may have dimensions in the range, by way of example only, of about 10. -25 centimeters in length and around 6-11 centimeters in width. This compares a shield for panties 14 generally having dimensions of about 16 centimeters in length and about 5.5 centimeters in width, Such dimensions of a shield for panties 14 may vary, the outer cover 12 desirably has dimensions in the range of about 1-5 centimeters greater in length and width than the shield for panties 1. The purpose of the larger size of the outer cover 12 is to provide the additional material for the tri-fold and join the outer cover 12 illustrated in Figures 3 and 4, without t, .i ^ i ^ * ^ ií4? ^. ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ undesirably affect the shield for panties 14 and the device for vaginal insertion.
A construction and material composition of a panty shield 14 is the absorbent pad described in U.S. Patent No. 4,372,312, which was issued on February 8, 1983; the contents of which are incorporated by reference here. Another example of a panty shield is the absorbent pad described in U.S. Patent No. 3,881,490, which was issued on May 6, 1975, the contents of which are incorporated herein by this reference. An example of the material composition and the construction of a plug is the plug described in U.S. Patent No. 5,807,372, which was granted on September 15, 19 $ 0; whose contents are incorporated here by this reference.
Referring now to Figure 7, there is illustrated an exemplary method for making a device for women's health protection in accordance with the principles of the present invention. As illustrated, a layer of material 72 moves continuously in a generally left-to-right direction as seen in Figure 7, and includes the side edge 74 and a side section 76 adjacent thereto, and a side edge 78 and a side section 80 adjacent thereto. The layer of continuously moving material 72 passes between a perforation roller 82 and an anvil roller 84 a In order to provide a frangible line 86 in the side section 76 and a frangible line 88 in the side section 80. A pair of adhesive applicators 90 and 92 apply an adhesive to the continuously moving layer 72. Specifically, the adhesive applicator 90 a connecting element 94 between the frangible line 86 and said side edge 74 is applied, and the adhesive applicator 92 applies the connecting element 96 between the frangible line 88 and the side edge 78. As the layer 72 continues to move, it passes through. an adhesive applicator 98 that applies an adhesive, desirably intermittently, along or near the center line of the layer 72, and a panty shielding station 100 places a plurality of panty shields 14 at intervals spaced apart on individual ones of the adhesive patterns 102 applied by the adhesive applicator 98.
After placement station 100, a positioning station of insertion device 104 intermittently and selectively places a vaginal insertion device 16 on each panty shield 14. Next, a matrix cutting roller 106 forms a plurality of shields for individual panties 14 and respective individual parts 108 of the layer 72. Then, a bending station 110 truncates each individual panty shield 14 and its respective part 108 in a sanitary protection device for the woman 10 with the bag 13, as shown in FIG. illustrated in Figures 4 and 7.
According to the present invention, the process described above can be modified in several ways. For example, the bending station 110 may include, in addition to the folding function, a pressing function in order to firmly adhere the first side section 28 (FIG. 3) and a second side section 38 of the outer cover 12 firmly together. In addition, the bending station 110 may also include the function of the die cutting roller 106. Such various types of apparatus are well known in the art for carrying out these cuts, bending, pressing and other functions. Similarly, the piercing roller 82 and the anvil roller 84 can be very well-known rollers or apparatuses in the art in order to provide a line of selected perforations. The adhesive applicators 90, 92 and 98 may be any suitable adhesive applicators well known in the art, and the adhesive applicators 90 and 92 may apply the adhesive in either a continuous or intermittent manner.
In another modification of the process illustrated in Figure 7, the piercing roller 82 and the anvil roller 84 can be part of a bending station 110 so that the formation of a frangible line can be achieved after each shield for individual panties 14 and its respective part 108 of the layer 72 is bent. In other words, the part 108 will not have any frangible lines 76 and 88 before the bending station 110, and then a part 108 and its shield for panties In perspective 14 are tri-bent, then the doubling station 110, or any suitable apparatus, can provide or form the frangible lines along the side sections of the pre-bent device. In this particular modification, the adhesive applicators 90 and 92 can also be removed, and their joining function can be achieved by means of the frangible lines 86 and 88, in this example a plurality of perforations.
In the description given above of one aspect of the present invention, each panty shield 14 includes a separate release strip 46 (FIG. 2) to protect the release fiber adhesive 48 which in turn is used to secure the panty shield. 14 in an undergarment. Another modification removes the release strip 46 in Figure 2 and replaces it with the outer cover 12. Each pant shield 14 placed by the positioning station 100 does not have a conventional release strip 46 (Figure 2) and each part 108 of the layer 72 then provides the function of a release strip 46. The user opens the outer cover 12 and, by separating it from the panty shield 14, exposes the adhesive of the release strip 48 (Figure 2) to secure the panty shield 14 to an undergarment. Again, other similar modifications can be achieved including the rearrangement of the sequence of steps or events in the method illustrated in Figure 7.
When the invention has been described as having a preferred embodiment, it will be understood that it is capable of further modifications. It is therefore intended to cover any variations, equivalents, uses or adaptations of the invention following the general principles thereof, including such items of the present description as they come or may fall within the common practice or customary in art to the art. which this invention belongs and falls within the limits of the appended claims.
