CARTON BOX AND A HANDLE FOR THE SAME
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates generally to cardboard forms for use in packing 5 articles. It is particularly useful for cartons for packaging containers, for example cans or bottles
• for beverages, although the invention is not limited to this aspect. More particularly, the invention relates to a handle for such cartons. Containers for example cans or bottles for
• Beverages, including soft drinks, beer beverages, or the like, are commonly sold in multiple quantities packed in a cardboard box. For the convenience of
The consumer is frequently provided with a handle that often includes as a primary feature one or two slots or other openings formed in the box. These grooves are commonly formed in the
To the top wall of the box. The user inserts the hand
or fingers inside one or both of the slots to lift the box. Many varieties of handles of this type are known in the art. Lifting a box containing cans or bottles of drink causes considerable effort
on the cardboard, of which the box is formed. For this
reason, and to prevent tearing of the carton and failure of the box, a large number of box handles have been designed over the years that include, several reinforcement structures, opening arrangements and 5 locations, fold lines directing the effort, grooves that relieve effort and similar. < Recently attempts have been made to introduce in the market, beverage boxes in which the cans are arranged in two rows with cans 10 corresponding to each row aligned axially. An example of such a box can be seen in reference to US Pat. No. 5,427, 242. Such boxes, also called cartons, are intended to contain a relative number of cans, for example, from 24 to 36 cans. The weight contained in these 15 boxes makes the use of reinforced handle structures especially advantageous. In addition, despite the multiple handle designs that have been previously developed, there is always a need for handles with improved performance. One handle
• 20 stronger can allow the use of larger cartons to pack heavier loads, as well as the possibility of a smaller form or a lighter cardboard material. In view of the large number of boxes or cartons that have been produced, the savings of
cost that can be made by these latter advantages can be important. The present invention and its preferred embodiment seeks to overcome or at least lessen the problems of the prior art. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION One aspect of the invention provides a box for packaging a plurality of articles, for example bottles containing a plurality of panels to form a tubular structure including an upper wall panel having opposite side edges and end edges. The upper wall panel is provided with a handle. A mark line extends from the handle for a cut line disposed along a side edge of the top wall panel to direct the lifting efforts away from the handle. According to an optional feature of this aspect of the invention, the handle may comprise first and second spaced openings defining a handle panel. According to another optional feature of this aspect of the invention, there may be a second marking line extending from one edge from the first handle opening to the cutting line and spaced from the first line of the handle.

15a are made of the upper side panels 16 and 21. The arrangements 81, 81a for receiving articles are basically the same, and therefore only one arrangement will be described in greater detail. It can be seen from FIG. 1 that the arrangement of the receiving article of the ß 20 figure 1 comprises a pair of article receiving panels 82 and 84 made from the panel of the upper side wall 16 and connected in a hinge along the lines diverging pleats 86 and 88. Panels 82 and 84 may have a shape
triangular and be separated from the form by a pair of

One of the cutting lines 89 is preferably above the fold line 28 and ends with curved portions to provide some stress relief. In other embodiments, no article receiving arrangement is provided, although to assist in the dissipation of the efforts from the handle, the cutting lines 89, 89a may be provided along one or more edges of the upper wall. Each article receiving arrangement 81, 81a is configured to receive the outermost article of one of the rows shown in Figure 2 and 4, wherein the panels 82, 84, are folded in an outward direction by a flange with a part Top of the article received in the resulting retention opening. Preferably the configuration is for the article receiving arrangements 81a on one side of the upper wall 18 to receive two adjacent articles Al, A2, e.g., third and fourth row and for the article receiving arrangements 81 on the other upper side wall for receive items from different rows A3, A4, for example, second and fifth rows in figure 2.
* fc * A "A plurality of deflecting marking lines are formed in the upper wall panel 18. On one side of the carton or box with the article 81a receiving arrangements in adjacent positions, there is a marking line 90 which extends from the handle panel 66 and terminates along the cutting line 89a, forming one of the article receiving arrangements 81a; preferably, intermediate to the ends of the cutting line 89a. In this embodiment, the marking line 90 preferably comprises two straight portions that form an obtuse angle to each other. They can also include a second brand line
96 that extends from the opposite end of the handle panel 66 and ends at the cutting line 89a following one edge of the other article receiving arrangement 81a formed from the upper side panel 21. In this embodiment there is also a pair of lines of mark 92, 94 extending from the ends of the cutting lines 89a and converging to a point adjacent a central portion of the opening 70 and ending at the outer edge thereof. The opposite side of the top panel further comprises a plurality of branching lines that deflect the effort, however, since the article receiving articles are further apart, the
-Bu «J brand lines are configured in a different way. The marking line 100 extends from the end of the handle panel 66 and terminates at the cut line 89 of the article receiving array 81. The line 5 of marking 100 preferably comprises two straight portions with an intermediate obtuse angle, so that the marking line 100 intersects the cut line 89 of one of the article receiving apertures 81 in a substantially perpendicular manner. A second line
of marking 98 preferably extends from the fold line 88 to terminate at an outer edge of the opening 68. Similarly, a second pair of lines of
• mark 99, 101, connects the other article receiver arrangement 81 with the handle panel 66 and the opening 68
respectively. The shape and configuration of the brand lines is not limited to what has been described, and it is thought that other arrangements could be used. However, each pair of adjacent brand lines can
9 20 to be modeled to define a part 102, 104, 106, 108 of the upper wall panel 18 shown in Figures 3 and 4, which can be flexed and / or arching with respect to the top and / or side walls of the carton or box for in this way transmit direct and / or
ibsorber lifting efforts from the handle
Considering now the construction of the carrier illustrated in Figures 2 and 3, it is thought that the cardboard of the present invention can be formed by a series of operations in fold and glue sequence that can be performed in a straight alignment machine so that the Cardboard does not need to be broken or inverted to complete its construction. The folding process is not limited to what is described below and can be altered according to the particular manufacturing requirements. Referring now to Figure 2, the cardboard can be seen in a tubular state already formed from the shape 10. The handle reinforcement strip "S" is fixed to the cardboard and the security flap 24 which is fixed to the base panel 12 by glue or other suitable means known in the art. The cardboard C is shown with its end closure structure comprising the upper end wall panels 40 and 40a and the lower end wall panels 42 and 42a, opened so that the cardboard is loaded from one or both ends with articles "A "as shown here for example, with beverage bottles arranged in a single row. The
articles "A" are placed on the bottom wall panel 12, of the carton or box 10. Such loading operation can be performed by a commercially available automated packaging machine and that is suitable. The closure of the extreme closure structure
# is preferably carried out in the following manner. The upper end wall panels 40, are folded to a closed position against the packed items
"A", folding the reinforcement corner panel structures 50 inwards. Glue is applied to the lower end wall panel 42 and the lower end wall panel 42 is folded up and fixed to the upper end wall panel 40. An identical operation is carried out to close the end closure structure located at the opposite end of the cardboard. (In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the carton or box is loaded from one end using only machinery of
• 20 automated packaging. During such loading operation, the opposite non-loaded cardboard end is closed and sealed before the bottles are pushed into the cardboard). The cardboard in its fully constructed and loaded condition is shown in figure 3.
., *!. *! . t ..
The handle arrangement formed in the upper wall panel 18 can be seen in greater detail in Figure 4. In use when the loaded cardboard is lifted for the first time, a user inserts the hand and / or fingers in one or both of the openings 68 and 70 and grasps the portion of the panel 66 intermediately. The user then lifts the cardboard C. The weight of the cardboard causes the handle panel 66 to be separated from the upper wall panel along the interruptable lines 80 during the lifting and subsequently the tearing effort to move along the lengths of the panels. brand lines
90, 92, 94, 96, 98, 100 towards the receiving arrangements of article 81. This effectively converts the tear effort in the handle area to a tensor stress along the marking lines. Thus, those parts 102, 104, 106, 108 of the upper wall between the aforementioned fold lines can be flexed and / or arched. In the specific modality presented, a specific place is shown for each article receiving arrangement. However, the receiver arrays can be located adjacent to other articles within the article cluster and the position of the brand lines changed according to the above, within the scope of the present invention.
