The rotation pulse source rotates the axis of rotation. The counter Ib is used to open the top cover the, and is provided on the upper surface of the main body 10. The power supply switch 11 and the reset switch 12 are also provided on the upper surface of the main body 10. In the surface of the front side of the main body 10, as shown in figure 3, is placed side by side two receiving portions 3a and 3b. The receiving portions 3a and 3b respectively receive the card-type external storage devices 30 of the first type as shown in Figures 1, 3 and 4. The structure of the receiving portions 3a and 3b will be described below. Connection portions 4a and 4b exist below the reception portions 3a and 3b, respectively. On surfaces of the rear side of the main body 10 there is a display connection portion 5 and a power supply connection portion (not shown), etc. The operating device 20 includes a connector 21, an operating portion 22, and a cable 23. The operating portion 22 is equipped with several operation switches 24 to 29. The connector 21 is inserted into the connection portions 4a, 4b of the main body 10 for connection as shown in Figures 1, 3 and 4. The connector 21 connected to each of the connecting portions 4a, 4b is formed to have a portion protruding from the main body 100 in a form to join just the shape of the projecting portion of the card-type external storage device 30 mounted on the receiving portion 3a, when viewed from above. Next, the structure of the second type of entertainment system 200 will be described. In a manner similar to the entertainment system 100 of the first type, the main body 210 of the second type of entertainment system 200 comprises an optical disc playback portion 201, operating processing device, receiving portions of card type storage device 203a, 203b, operating device connection portions 204a, 204b, a counter 211, and a display connection portion, etc. (figure 5). The optical disc reproduction portion 201 generally has the same structure as the optical disc reproduction portion 1 of the entertainment system 100 of the first type, but the portion for mounting an optical disc is a drawer type tray 201a. The tray 201a is provided on the front side surface of the main body 210 as shown in Figure 5 and pulled forward. On the front side surface of the main body 210, there is also provided a counter 201b for pulling the tray 201a. The receiving portions 203a, 203b and the connecting portions 204a and 204b are respectively positioned in a vertical direction on the front side surface of the main body 210 as shown in Figure 5. The structure of the receiving portions 203a and 203b will be presented with details below. Similar to the operation device 20 described above, the operating device 220 of the second type entertainment system 200 includes a connector 221, an operating portion 222 and a cable 223. The connector 221 is connected to each of the connection portions 204a and 204b of the main body 210. The operation portion 222 also includes self-locking switches 218 and 219 in addition to several switches 224 to 229. Next, the structure of the receiving portions 3a and 3b of the entertainment system 100 of the first type and the structure of the external storage device will be described. of card type 30 of the first type. The receiving portion 3a has an opening 1401 for inserting the card-type external storage device 30 and three terminal holding portions 1511, 1512 and 1513 positioned side by side with a distance between them in the opening 1401 as shown in Figure 14 Each of the terminal clamping portions 1511, 1512 and 1513 is equipped with two or three terminals 1501. The terminals 1501 are bent at the top, project to the upper side as shown in Figure 15, and enter in contact with the connection terminal 34 of the card-type external storage device 30 (Figure 7) in the part. Between these terminals 1501, the three terminals 1502 of the terminal holding portion 1512 are used to supply a power supply voltage to the card-type external storage device 30. Meanwhile the terminals 1501 of the terminal holding portions 1511 and 1513 are used as signal terminals for game information data. The three terminal clamping portions 1511, 1512 and 1513 are equipped, each with a flange 1517 in the upper portion. The height of the three flanges 1517 is greater than the upper part of the terminals 1501. A conductive foreign body such as a coin in the receiving portion 3a by mistake, said foreign body will not make contact with the terminal 1501, in such a manner that the terminals 1501 will not form short between them due to the presence of a conductive foreign body. When the card-type external storage device 30 is inserted, the three flanges 1517 serve to guide the insertion by engagement with the upper slot 604 of the card-type external storage device.
(Figures 6 and 7). Note that the front portion 1520 of the flange 1517 protrudes further forward than the front portion 1521 of the terminal 1501 as shown in Figure 15, while it may be positioned flush with the front portion 1521 of the terminal 1501. In the case in which the front part 1520 of the flange 1517 is designed to protrude further forward than the front part 1521 of the terminal 1501, a conductive foreign body inserted such as for example a coin can not make contact with the front part 1521 of the terminal 1501 , in such a way that a short can be avoided. There are flanges 1516 respectively in the lower sections of the three terminal clamping portions 1511, 1512 and 1513, and the flange 1516 engages the lower slot 305 of the card-type external storage device 30 at the time of insertion and guides the insertion. On both sides of the opening 1401, portions 1411 and 1412 are raised to engage the recesses provided in the side surface of the card-type external storage device 30 and prevent the card-type external storage device 30 from being dislodged. A shutter 1402, closed by the force of a spring 1403, is provided in the opening 1401 of the receiving portion 3a. When the card-type external storage device 30 is inserted, the shutter 1402 is pushed up by the card-type external storage device 30 such that it is in an open state as shown in Figure 16. Note that the receiving portion 3b has the same structure as the receiving portion 3a, and therefore a description is not provided here. Meanwhile, as shown in Figures 6 and 7, the card type external storage device 30 of the first type has a card-type case 601 having an internal space and a circuit board 602 provided therein. One end of the card-type case 601 serves as a portion to be mounted on the receiving portion 3a of the main body 10. The portion to be assembled has an opening 603 having its internal space divided into three spaces 701, 702 and 703. When the device Card-type external storage 30 is mounted on the receiving portion 3a the main body 10, the terminal holding portions 1511, 1512 and 1513 of the receiving portion 3a are inserted into the three spaces 701, 702 and 703, respectively, as shown in FIG. 16. At the upper edge of the opening 603, three upper slots 604 are formed as shown in FIG. 7. These three upper slots 604 engage with the upper flanges 1517 on the receiving portion 3a. Three lower grooves 605 are formed under the lower edge of the opening 603. These three lower grooves 605 engage with the three lower flanges 1516 in the receiving portion 3a. The circuit board 602 has a cutout shape in accordance with the shape of the upper slot 604. As shown in Fig. 9, the circuit board 602 has a non-volatile memory 31, a control circuit 32, a clock circuit 33 and a connection terminal 34. Here, an instant read-only memory is used for the non-volatile memory 31. The control circuit 32 communicates with the computing unit 2 of the main body 10 and controls for storing data in the memory non-volatile 31 / read data from the volatile memory 31 in accordance with the content of the communication. The clock circuit 33 supplies clock signals to the control circuit 32. The connection terminal 34 comes into contact with the terminal 1501 (figure 14) of the receiving portion 3a of the main body 10 at the time of assembly, so that it is find electrically connected to the main body 10. The arrangement of each of the circuits in the circuit board 602 is shown in figure 8, and the connection terminal 34 is provided at the end on the side of the opening 603. the connection terminal 34 includes signal terminals 801 and power supply terminals 802. The operation power supply for the non-volatile memory 31 , the control circuit 32 and the clock circuit 33 are supplied from the main body 10 through the power supply terminals 802. The power supply terminals 802 are placed closer to the side of the opening 603 that the signal terminals 801, and at the time of assembly, they come into contact with the terminals 1501 on the side of the receiving portion 3a, before the signal terminals 801. Therefore, it is possible to insert the external storage device of the card type. in the main body 10 / extracting the card-type external storage device 30 from the main body 10 in a state in which power voltage is supplied to the positive card-type external storage 30 from the main body 10. The structure of the receiving portions 203a, 203b of the second-type entertainment system 200 and the external-card-type storage device structure 230 of the second type will be described continuation. As shown in Figure 13, the structure of the receiving portion 203a is almost the same as the structure of the receiving portion 3a of the first type of entertainment system 100. One point of difference is that the number of top flanges 1517 only one is reduced. The single top flange 1517 is provided in the central terminal holding portion 1512 and no flanges are provided in the other terminal holding portions 1511 and 1513. The upper edge 1517 remains only in the central terminal holding portion 1512 because the width of the opening 1401 of the receiving portion 203a is somewhat less than twice the diameter of a typical coin, and accordingly if the upper flange 1517 is present in the center, any foreign conducting body inserted such as a coin will not make contact with terminals 1501, in such a way that a short can be effectively avoided. In addition, the upper flange 1517 present in the center can effectively serve as a guide. The front part of the flange 1517 is designed to be flush with the front of the terminal 1501. The other structure of the receiving portion 203a is substantially the same as the structure of the receiving portion 3a and therefore a description is not provided. The structure of the receptive portion 203b is the same as the structure of the receiving portion 203a.
Note that the front part of the edge 1517 may be designed to protrude more forward than the front part of the terminal 1501 in a manner similar to the case illustrated in FIG. 15. Meanwhile, as shown in FIGS. 10 and 11, when seen from the outside, the card-type external storage device 230 of the second type substantially resembles the card-type external storage device 30 of the first type. However, there is only one upper slot 604 corresponding to the single flange 1517 of the receiving portion 203a. As shown in Fig. 12, in the card type external storage device 230 of the second type, the capacity of the non-volatile memory 231 installed in the circuit board 602 is greater than the non-volatile memory capacity 31 in the device. of external storage of card type 30 of the first type. The internal circuit configuration of the control circuit 232 is different from the configuration of the control circuit 32 accordingly. Next, four cases of insertion of external storage devices of card type 30 and 230 of the first type and of the second type into the receiving portions 3a, 2a of the entertainment systems 100, 200 will be described. First, when the external storage devices Card type 30 of the first type is inserted into the receiving portion 3a of the entertainment system 100 of the first type, the three upper flanges 1517 in the receiving portion 3a of Figure 14 respectively engage the three upper slots 604 in the external storage device of card type 30 shown in figures 6 and 7 to guide the insertion. Thus, the card type external storage device 30 of the first type can be mounted on the receiving portion 3a of the entertainment system of the first type 100. the calculation processing unit 1 of the entertainment system of the first type 100 communicates with the control circuit 32 of the card type external storage device 30 of the first type through the connection terminals 1501 and 34, and allows data representing game information to be stored in the non-volatile memory 31 / read from the non-volatile memory 31. Second, the case of inserting the card type external storage device 30 of the first type into the receiving portion 203a of the second type entertainment system 200 will be described. In this case, as shown in Figure 13, there is only one top flange 1517 in the center of the receiving portion 203a, while three slots 604 are formed in the card-type external storage device 30 as shown in Figure 7 Thus, only the slot 604 in the center is engaged with the flange 1517, but the other slots 604 on both sides will not be obstacles to insertion. The lower flange 1516 and the slot 605 are engaged to guide the insertion. As a result, the card type external storage device 30 of the first type can be mounted on the receiving portion 203a of the second type entertainment system 200. The calculation processing unit of the second type of entertainment system 200 has a function for adapting to the card type external storage device 30 of the first type in accordance with that described above. More specifically, the calculation processing unit has an integrated program for communicating with the control circuit 32 of the external storage device of card type 30 of the first type in order to determine whether or not the mounted device is the external storage device of card type 30 of the first type. Thus, when it is determined that the card-type external storage device 30 of the first type is mounted, data representing game information may be stored in the non-volatile memory 31 / read from the non-volatile memory 31 in accordance with the operation of the control circuit 32. Third, the case of the insertion of the card-type external storage device 230 of the second type in the receiving portion 3a of the entertainment system of type 100 will be described. In this case, there are three upper flanges 1517 in the receiving portion 3a as shown in Figure 14, while there is only one slot 604 in the card type external storage device 230 of the second type as shown in Figure 11. As a result, the top flanges 1517 on the sides between the three top flanges 1517 enter in collision with the edge of the opening 603 of the portion to be mounted of the card-type external storage device 230 of the second type and the edge of the opening 603 prevents insertion. Accordingly, the card-type external storage device 230 of the second type can not be mounted on the receiving portion 3a of the entertainment system of the first type 100. Thus, the connection of the card-type external storage device 230 of the second type is avoided. and the receiver portion 3a of the entertainment system of the first type 100. The calculation processing unit of the first type entertainment system 100 has no function to adapt to the card type external storage device 230 of the second type as described above , and therefore if the card-type external storage device 230 is mounted in the entertainment system 100 of the first type, the game information can not be stored / read from the card-type external storage device 230 using the entertainment 100. In the structure in accordance with this modality, the edge of the ura 603 of the card-type external storage device 230 of the second type prevents the insertion of the upper flange 1517, and consequently the assembly itself can not be achieved, and therefore it is easily determined that they do not correspond to each other before an attempt of communication. Likewise, it is easy to inform a user that the card-type external storage device 230 of the second tipc can not adapt to the entertainment system 100. Finally, the case of the insertion of the card-type external storage device will be described below. 230 of the second type in the receiving portion 203a of the entertainment system 200 of the second type. In this case, there is only one top flange 1517 formed in the center in the receiving portion 203a, while there is also only one slot 604 formed in the center of the card-type external storage device 230. As a result, the flange 1517 and the slot 604 are engaged therebetween to guide the insertion, such that the card-type external storage device 230 of the second type can be mounted on the receiving portion 203a of the second type entertainment system 200. The calculation processing unit of the second type entertainment system 200 corresponds to the external storage device of the card type 230 of the second type, and consequently allows data representing a game action to be stored in the volatile memory 31 / read from the volatile memory 31 in accordance with the operation of the control circuit 232. As described above, in accordance with this mode, the receiving portions 3a,! 203a or similar of the entertainment systems 100, 200 and the openings of the portions to be mounted in the card-type external storage devices 30, 230, have the forms described above, in such a way that the external storage device of the cardholder type 30 of the first type can be mounted on the entertainment system 100 of the first type, while the card-type external storage device 230 of the second type can not be mounted. The external storage devices of card type 30 or 230 of the first type and of the second type can be mounted in the entertainment system 200 of the second type. A) Yes, one-way interchangeability can be achieved for the external storage devices of card type 30 and 230. In addition to conforming to the structure of this embodiment, the card-type external storage device 230 can not be mounted on the entertainment system 100 whose communication method is not adaptable, so that no electrical contact will be made between terminals 1501 and terminals 34. It is easy to inform the user of the inability of this assembly, and there is also an advantage in the sense that electrical circuits of both the entertainment system 100 and the external storage device 230 will not be adversely affected. Particularly, since in this mode the terminals 1501 include power supply terminals as a part, the structure for maintaining the terminals that should not be in contact with each other is especially effective from a circuit protection perspective. In addition, the inability to mount in accordance with what is described above, makes the user immediately aware that the device is not suitable for the system, and therefore the user does not have to understand the correspondence between them in advance. As a result, the user can easily confirm whether data can be stored on his external card-type storage device / read from his external card-type storage device by testing whether or not the device can be mounted on the entertainment system. Accordingly, in an entertainment system that allows game information to be stored in an external card-type storage device for each player, the external card-type storage device can be used without any problem even when there are several types of storage devices. entertainment systems. * In addition, in accordance with the present invention, in order to achieve the one-way interchangeability of the external storage devices 30 and 230 described above, the upper flanges 1517 are employed to avoid shorts in the receiving portions 30a, 203a, of the entertainment systems 100, 200 and to guide the insertion. Thus, it is not necessary to install other particular structures to achieve the interchangeability of a sense, which allows obtaining a cost reduction. It will be noted that, in this embodiment, three upper flanges 1517 are provided in the entertainment system 100, while the number of flanges is reduced to only one in the entertainment system 200. However, only the number of flanges is required. 1517 in the entertainment system 200 is less than the number of beads 1517 in the entertainment system 100, and accordingly two beads 1517 can be provided in the entertainment system 200. The shape of the parts other than the top flange 1517 it can be changed to achieve the interchangeability of a meaning. For example, the number of lower flanges 1516 can be reduced.
