Description

PESTICIDE FORMULATIONS CONTAINING NEUTRALIZED AROMATIC SULPHONIC ACID SURFACTANTS COSÍ AMO ALCOXILADA DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to surfactants useful in life science and industrial formulations. More particularly, the invention relates to alkoxylated amine surfactants neutralized by aromatic sulfonic acid, and to pesticidal formulations containing them.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Alkyl phenol ethoxylates (APE) are a class of common industrial surfactants that are widely used in pesticide formulations. However, formulations containing alkyl phenol ethoxylates do not always provide the most desirable combination of design specifications, for example product efficacy, work parameters, and cost. Traditional surfactant systems that are not alkyl phenol ethoxylates have not been readily adaptable substitutes for alkyl phenol ethoxylate surfactants. For example, depending on the requirements of the formulation, it has been proven that the calcium dodecyl benzene sulfonate used in conjunction with fatty acid ethoxylates is a substitute Ref: 126814 unacceptable for alkyl phenol ethoxylates, due to poor performance within one or more design parameters, such as emulsion stability, acute toxicity, temporal and thermal stability, chemical and physical stability; dynamic solution, suspension, or dilution, and stabilization of viscosity and suspension. Phosphate esters, which are surfactants without alkyl phenol ethoxylates, found in many types of formulations, suffer from long-term stability problems due to undesirable tranesterification and saponification reactions involving the monoester, di-ester components, and free acid of the surfactant mixture. The inability of the industry to adapt existing technology in order to improve the characteristics of surfactant systems containing alkyl phenol ethoxylates has necessitated the development of an entirely new line of surfactant substitutes other than alkyl phenol ethoxylates. The additional challenge faced by the scientific community has been to develop new substitutes without alkyl phenol ethoxylates that can be easily made from readily available and effective raw materials for cost. In accordance with the foregoing, there continues to be a need for other surfactant substitutes without alkyl phenol ethoxylates.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION It has now been found that aromatic sulfonic acids neutralized with alkoxylated amine are suitable as substitutes for surfactants without alkyl phenol ethoxylates. The surfactants of the present invention may be in the form of a surfactant salt compound, or a composition containing one or more surfactant compounds or salts. In one embodiment of the invention, the compositions containing the present surfactants without alkyl phenol ethoxylates, do not contain or are substantially free of alkyl phenol ethoxylates (APE). The surfactants of the present invention are obtained by combining the appropriate aromatic sulfonic acid with the appropriate alkoxylated amine.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION One aspect of the invention is the salt compound of the formula (I): [(H-BA] nAn "(I) where An ~ is the conjugate base of HA acid, where HA is an aromatic sulfonic acid, and (HB) * is the conjugate acid of base B, where B is an alkoxylated amine, and n is the number of sulfonate anion groups or sulfonic acid groups on the base or the conjugate acid, respectively, and with the proviso that HA and An ~ can not contain a phenolic fraction. "phenolic" is defined as any phenyl ring containing at least one -OH group or any group developed by replacing the hydrogen of the -OH group with another organic or metal radical. The invention disclosed herein also includes a surfactant composition comprising a salt compound of the formula (I). The invention also includes a pesticidal formulation comprising at least one pesticide and a salt compound of the formula (I). A preferred aspect of the invention is the salt compound having the formula [(H-B) +] nAn ", where An ~ is the anion of the formula: wherein each R is independently selected from the group consisting of alkyl of 1 to 24 carbon atoms, and alkylaryl of 7 to 24 carbon atoms, m is a number of 0 to 5, n is a number of 1 to 3 , p is a number from 0 to 3, and q is a number from 0 to 3, and r is a number from 0 to 4, s is a number from 1 to 3, and (HB) + is the cation of the formula: wherein R is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl of 1 to 24 carbon atoms, and alkenyl of 2 to 24 carbon atoms-CH2-, each R5 is independently alkylene of 2 to 4 carbon atoms of chain straight or branched, and x is a number from 1 to 50, and y is a number from 0 to 50, preferably x + y is a number from 2 to 50 inclusive. A more preferred embodiment of the salt compound of the formula (H-B) * A ", wherein A" is the anion of the formula: wherein Ri, R2, and R3 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and alkyl of 1 to 24 carbon atoms, and (H-B) is the cation of the formula: H (CH, CH, 0)? H N / \ (CH2CH20) and H wherein R 4 is defined as above (preferably normal octadecyl, normal hexadecyl, and cis-9-octadecyl); and x + y is a number from about 7 to 9 (preferably 8). Another more preferred embodiment of the invention is the salt compound wherein A ~ is an anion having the formula: where Ri is a normal dodecyl group. The invention is also the compound or salt produced from the process of neutralizing an aromatic sulfonic acid of the formula HA with an alkoxylated amine of the formula B. The ammonium sulfonate salt compounds, or the product from the process of combining an aromatic sulfonic acid with an alkoxylated amine (to the extent there is a difference) are both characteristics of the presently disclosed invention. The scope of the invention disclosed herein should not be construed as limited by any particular chemical theory related to the formation of complex, equilibrium, reaction, or acid-base chemistry of the components used to make the surfactants or other ingredients used to make other finally useful formulations (eg, pesticide formulations). In this regard, another aspect of the invention is the surfactant composition comprising one or more aromatic sulfonic acids and one or more alkoxylated amines, wherein the constituent components may or may not have chemically interacted so as to result in a change in the form of the components. The invention encompasses the static composition of the appropriate components mixed together, as well as the chemically integrated surfactant composition comprising at least one aromatic sulfonic acid and at least one alkoxylated amine. "Static composition" denotes the composition composed of components, wherein the components have not changed substantially by virtue of their combination with other components of the composition. "Chemically integrated composition" means a composition resulting from the natural balance, complex formation, dissociation, or other chemical transformation, if any, that may arise after the combination of the components and before the final use of the surfactant in a pesticidal formulation . Accordingly, the "chemically integrated composition" of the present invention encompasses, by definition, the situation where there is a "static composition", as well as any resulting composition that occurs at any time from the point between the initial creation and the final use. in the field of products containing the surfactant. In other words, the invention disclosed is not limited to a static composition of chemically unchanged constituent components. Another aspect of the invention is the surfactant composition produced as a whole from the combination of the aromatic sulfonic acid and the alkoxylated amine base, to the extent that it consists of different products of ammonium sulfonate salt compounds. This composition may contain chemically unchanged starting materials, as well as other reaction products or by-products from the reaction, equilibrium, dissociation, or complex formation of the components in the composition. The invention also includes the process for obtaining a surfactant that is useful as a substitute for alkyl phenol ethoxylate. In addition to the surfactant product, or the product by the process, the process for obtaining or making any of the surfactants is disclosed herein as part of the invention. The invention also includes the method of using the surfactant salt compounds of the formula (I) and the compositions thereof as substitutes for alkyl phenol ethoxylate. The alkoxylated amines and aromatic sulfonic acids used to make the surfactants of the invention preferably are those compounds that are readily available and that are economical. However, the cost of the materials is only one factor in the selection of the alkoxylated amines and the aromatic acids used as starting materials. After performing a routine benefit analysis for cost, and in view of other design parameters, it may become apparent that more expensive and less readily available starting materials may be preferred. The aromatic sulfonic acids used in the present invention may have one or more sulfonic acid groups, and one or more groups attached to the aromatic moiety thereof. Aromatic sulfonic acids can be defined in general by formulas II or III: (II) (III) wherein each R, m, n, p, q, r and s are defined as above. Preferred starting materials for making the surfactants of the present invention are the compounds defined by the formulas Ilia or Illa: wherein Ri, R, and R3 are defined as above. Preferred alkoxylated amines useful for making the surfactants of the present invention are one or more of the compounds defined by formula IV: where R4, x and y are defined as above. A preferred feature of the invention is wherein the alkoxylated amines are one or more of the ethoxylated amines of the formula V: (V) where R4 / x and y are defined as above. Additional preferred aspects of the invention are where R 4 is selected from the group consisting of normal octadecyl, normal hexadecyl, and cis-9-octadecenyl, and x + y is a number from 5 to 10. another preferred aspect of the invention is where the average of x + y is a number of about 7 to 9 (more preferably 8). Another aspect of the invention is the composition comprising the formulation of the surfactants disclosed above, in formulations containing one or more different active ingredients. A preferred embodiment of the invention is a pesticidal formulation containing the surfactants that do not contain alkyl phenol ethoxylate currently disclosed. However, the invention is not limited to pesticidal formulations. Other useful formulations which may contain the surfactants not containing alkyl phenol ethoxylate currently disclosed include shampoo formulations, detergent formulations in general, and soap formulations used in the mining industry. The surfactants currently disclosed are considered to have general applicability as substitutes for alkyl phenol ethoxylate, and therefore, would be expected to be useful in many other known formulations. The invention encompasses any formulation obtained by the substitution in another way of the surfactants currently disclosed for alkyl phenol ethoxylates, as well as other surfactants. The presently disclosed invention also encompasses any formulation obtained by the complementation of the compositions containing alkyl phenol ethoxylates with the surfactants currently claimed. In general, any formulation that conventionally makes use of surfactant additives, would be subject to modification by substitution or complementation with one or more of the surfactants of the present invention. Although the compounds and compositions are referred to as "surfactants" in the present application, they are also expected to have other non-surfactant properties, which may be useful regardless of any inherent surfactant properties. Depending on the application of the present invention, it may result in greater bioefficacy and / or reduced toxicity and irritation. Another aspect of the invention is the composition comprising the formulation of the surfactants disclosed above, in formulations containing one or more herbicides, and one or more protectants (antidotes). When herbicides are applied, the cultivated plants can also suffer severe damage due to factors including the concentration of the herbicide and the mode of application, the cultivated plant itself, the nature of the soil, and climatic conditions, such as exposure. A preferred embodiment of the invention is, for example, the formulation of s-metolachlor and benoxacor, or s-metolachlor, atrazine and benoxacor, each in combination with the surfactants of the present invention. The surfactants are prepared by mixing the aromatic sulfonic acid of the formula II or III with the alkoxylated amine of the formula IV while controlling the pH. The desired pH is maintained by precisely regulating the proportion of the acid and base components in the composition. For example, the appropriate acid-base ratio and the desired pH can be achieved according to the following procedure: 1) a known weight of the aromatic sulfonic acid is dissolved in a 50/50 solution of isopropanol and water. 2) A steep amount of alkoxylated amine is slowly added to the aromatic sulfonic acid with constant stirring using a magnetic stirrer, while monitoring the pH by using a pH meter adapted with a silver chloride electrode. 3) When the desired pH is obtained, the amount of alkoxylated amine required is measured. 4) The proportion of aromatic sulfonic acid: alkoxylated amine (acid: base) is determined, and the surfactant is prepared by mixing the appropriate amounts of the two components with stirring. For many of the pesticidal formulations described herein, the preferred ratio of acid: base is about 35:65 (weight ratio). The acidity or basicity of the constituent components may vary depending on the supplier of the materials or the particular batch, and therefore, the pH is the controlling factor in the preparation of the compounds, compositions, and formulations of the present invention. The pKa and the pkb for the aromatic sulfonic acid and the alkoxylated amine, respectively, can be varied to some degree by manipulating the type and degree of substitution for the compounds defined by the formulas II, III, and IV. Accordingly, the selection of the particular acid or base used will also affect the proportion of acid: base used to make the surfactants, as well as the desired pH. A preferred pH range for the surfactant is a pH of about 3 to 7; a more preferred pH range is from about 4 to 6, and a finally preferred pH range is from about 5 to 6. It is less desirable to adjust the pH after the sulfonic acid and amine base components are mixed, by further addition of other acids or bases normally used to raise or lower the pH, because even minor amounts of additional salts can make a large difference in the observed properties of the surfactant product. It is also less desirable to have additional process steps, or to have the additional cost associated with the purchase, handling, storage, and disposal of additional chemicals. The emulsion stability of the neutralized dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid with an ethoxylated tallow amine is usually higher when the "average number of units of ethylene oxide (EO) on the tallow amine is 8 (ie 8EO)." Average " it is defined as the arithmetic average of a set of real numbers (in this case, the number of ethylene oxide units in the ethoxylated amines used to make the surfactant.) A preferred feature of the invention is where there is a population distribution of continuous and symmetric bell curve around 8E0 It is also desirable that there is a low dispersion of preference within one standard deviation (o) from the average (average EO) A decrease in the emulsification capacity is observed when using amine of sebum of 7E0 or of 9EO to make the surfactant Some commercial suppliers and product names for the ethoxylated amines (ie, amine ethoxylates) ) They are: * Directions: Witco Corporation, 5777 Erantz Road, P.O. Box 646, Dublin, Ohio 43017. Stephan Company, Northfield, Illinois 60093. A preferred aspect of the invention includes the combination of the surfactant compositions herein with liquid pesticidal compositions, to obtain a concentrated emulsifiable formulation that can be directly mixed with water. or another aqueous solution to give an aqueous pesticidal formulation without special mixing processes. "Alkylaryl" means an aryl group substituted by one or more alkyl groups, wherein the "aryl" can be a non-heteroaromatic ring system, or a heteroaromatic ring system.
