Abstract

A tape (10) for use in closing a container (9) having opposing ends includes a base layer (12) and a tearable tape strip (14). The base layer includes a tear resistant backing (16) having a first side (18) and a second side (20), and an adhesive (22) coated on at least part of the first side of the backing. The tearable tape strip is located on the first side of the backing and has a first side anda second side. The tearable tape strip permits tearing of itself and the tear resistant backing with a given force notwithstanding that the tear resistant backing is otherwise not cleanly tearable. The tearable tape strip tears through the base layer when the tape is removed from the container. The tape can include a tab (32) at one of the ends of the tape. The tab is formed by nicks (30) extending from at least one of the ends of the tape and is located at least partially through the tearable tape strip which facilitate beginning tears. The invention is also a container including the tape and a container having means for adhering its flap (64) to the container to close the container and a tearable tape strip on the flap.

Description

CLOSURE TAPE WITH SCRATCH CONTROL AND CONTAINER WITH CLOSURE TAPE WITH SCRATCH CONTROL TECHNICAL FIELD The present invention relates to adhesive tapes and containers. More particularly, the present invention relates to adhesive tapes for closing containers and containers having the closure tape.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Containers, such as bags and other packages, must be closed in a secure manner to retain their contents. The container must remain closed during storage and shipping and avoid vibration and rough handling bumps. When the distribution is finished, the consumer or end user needs to open the container to remove the contents. Ideally, a container can be opened without tools or special ability. The achievement of both secure closure and easy opening is difficult; Many containers can be secured for shipping but are difficult to open. For example, Ref. 125277 multi-walled paper bags of dog food or fertilizer frequently have cooked tops that remain closed during shipment but are difficult to open by the end user without tools or without damaging the bag and spilling unused contents. U.S. Patent No. 4,781,296 discloses the manufacture of an openable spinnable olefin wrapper of Tyvek®. It improves common cardboard wrappers that are relatively easy to open using strip tape, tear, conventional products. This highly tear-resistant wrapping material can be fused by ultrasonic sealing, creating lines of weakness. European Patent 447209 describes an improved opening for Tyvek® casings. Use reinforcing tie tape (or similar tape) that is cut at the ends to control the direction of tearing through the wrap. It also includes cutting through the Tyvek® material, instead of just weakening it. These patents describe opening devices for lightweight mail wraps; They work well in this light weight application but are not easily usable to resist splitting when used in a heavier package because the tape tear relatively easily. European Patent 755868 discloses a cardboard wrap using an individual tape to close and open a wrap. A uniaxially oriented plastic film is coated with adhesive on both sides, allowing it to function as a closure tape as well as an opening tape. The tape is cut to control the tear direction. The cardboard material of the wrap provides tear resistance. The Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company (3M) has sold tear strip tapes for many years. A version of the strip of strip tear strip (ribbon # 8612 of 3M) has a backing of poliet ilen-tereftalato (PET) and a filament of reinforcement of thread polyester or fiberglass coated with a adhesive sensitive to the pressure (PSA). This tape is applied to the inside of a corrugated box or inside a cardboard mail envelope. The corrugated paperboard or cardboard is cut on the outside of the tear tape to provide a tongue that can be pulled by the end user. During the opening, the tape remains intact and does not separate. The tape is pulled and torn through corrugated cardboard or cardboard. This tear-away strip tape can only be used in lightweight situations because the force required to tear the tape is relatively low. Other versions use a polypropylene tape tensioned with a PSA and optionally, a reinforced fastening tape. These types of tear strips can also be applied to the adhesive side of a wide film tape such as a box sealing tape or a heat shrinkable tape. Again, the wide tape is cut to provide a tongue and to start tearing. The distance between the cuts is wider than the tear strip. This is only used for light weight packaging because cuts tend to spread prematurely during shipping, if used in a heavier shipping container. Using this class of conventional tear strips on a low density polyethylene tape backing, linear (LLDPE) will not work because the tear strength and elongation of the LLDPE is too high.
The lightweight film tear tape (with a PSA) or with heat activated adhesive) also applies to film overwrap in packaging. An example is a pack of cigarettes.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION A container for storing articles has a flap for closing the container. The flap has first and second major surfaces and is formed of a tear-resistant film material. The container includes a means for adhering the first main surface of the fin to the container for closing the container and a strip of tear-off tape. The strip of tape is located on one of the first and second major surfaces of the flap, and allows the tear of the flaps and the flap with a given force notwithstanding that the flap of tear-resistant film can not be clearly torn from the flap. Another way. The strip of tear tape can be located on the first major surface of the flap such that the tear of the strip of tear tape is torn through the flap. The means for adhering the first major surface of the fin to the container may include an adhesive on at least part of the first main side of the fin, the container, or both. In another embodiment, a tape for use in closing a container having opposite ends includes a base layer and a strip of tearable tape. The base layer includes a tear-resistant backing having a first side and a second side, and an adhesive on at least part of the first side of the backing. The tear strip tape is located on the first side of the backrest and has a first side and a second side. The strip of strip tear allows the tear of the same one and the resistant end to the tear with a given force nevertheless that the resistant end to the tear can not tear clearly of another way. The adhesive can be located between the backing and the strip of tear tape and the strip of tear tape is torn through the base layer when the tape is removed from the container. The tear-resistant backing can be LLDPE, low density polyethylene LDPE, molded polypropylene and Kraton / polypropylene blends. The strip of strip tearing tape can be a tape of tie reinforced, polypropylene tenado and tape reinforced with filaments. The strip of tear tape can have at least one of the filaments and strands. The tape may include a tongue at one end. The tongue is formed by cuts that are taken from at least one of the ends of the tape and is located at least partially through the strip of tear tape that facilitates the beginning of tearing. In one version, at least one cut has a first portion and a second portion. The first portion extends from at least one end of the tape and passes through only the base layer and the second portion passes through the strip of tear tape. This allows the tongue to adhere to the container to reduce the risk of container opening before the appropriate time. The tape may include a means for indicating whether the container has been opened and reclosed. Using linear low density polyethylene as the tear-resistant backing causes the broken edge of the tape to become distorted so that the recovery of the open tape is noticeable when it is covered with additional tape. . £ - > -.-, - BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of a tape of the present invention.

Figure 7 is a perspective view of the container of Figure 6 DETAILED DESCRIPTION This invention is a tape that functions both to close a container 9 and also to provide a mechanism for easily opening the container. Although the container 9 can be any container such as casings and boxes, the invention works particularly well in flexible containers such as multiple wall paper bags to store granular material. As shown in Figure 1, the tear-strip strip 10 combines a base layer 12 which is a tear-resistant tape, with a strip 14 of tear-off tape. The base layer 12 includes a tear-resistant backing 16 having a first side 18 and a second side 20 and an adhesive 22 which in the illustrated embodiments is located on the first side 18 of the backrest 16. The adhesive 22 can be applied to the backing 16 by any known method such as knife coating. The tear strip strip 14 can be attached to either the first side 18 or the second lacquer 20 of the backing 16 of the base layer. In the illustrated embodiments, the strip 14 of tear tape adheres to the first side 18 of the backing 16 using the adhesive 22. In use, the tear strip 14 is located in the container 9 between the container and the base layer 12, without adhering to the container. In the illustrated embodiments, the tear strip strip 14 includes a base layer 24 and its own adhesive 26 at one end of the base layer to aid adhesion to the base layer 12 of the tear strip strip 10. In another embodiment, the adhesive 20 is on the other side of the base layer 24 of the strip of tear tape to adhere to the container 9. In another embodiment, the strip 14 of tear tape does not need to include an adhesive. The backing 16 may be a linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), low density polyethylene (LDPE), molded polypropylene, Kraton / polypropylene blends, or other tear resistant film. The tear strip strip 14 may be a tape reinforced, tear-off tape or a reinforced tie-in tape (RST) having strands or strands 2 £. Suitable RSTs are described in U.S. Patent Nos. 5,079,066 and 5,080,957. The tear strip strip 14 can also be tensioned polypropylene or other oriented or non-oriented films that tear preferentially in the longitudinal direction. The cords 28 restrict tears in the tear strip strip 14 to control the direction of tearing. The cuts 30 in the tear strip strip 14 form a terminal tab 32 and initiate the tear points. The effort of handling the container 9 concentrates on these points. The tear-resistant base layer 12 prevents the tear from propagating prematurely, yet allows a person to pull on the terminal tab 32 to easily open the container 9. A wide variety of tear-resistant tapes 12 are available. By balancing the resistance, premature splitting and ease of opening, a tape 10 with the full, desired characteristics can be achieved. The containers 9 have been closed with this invention and have been subjected to rough, severe driving tests. They have successfully resisted these efforts and have still allowed for easy opening. This tape 10 uses a weakness of the tear strip strip 14, such as RST, (its tendency to split in the longitudinal or machine direction) coupled with a AMáLs * - ^^ - ^ - * > tefcs- "inability to tear clearly through the tear-resistant backing to form a very functional opening feature for the containers. Clear tearing means a consistent tear opening, with a relatively uniform tear force, without excessive distortion of the broken film. There are no extended, stretched or jagged edges. In Figure 2, one embodiment of this invention is shown. A backing 16 made of tear-resistant film such as LLDPE and an adhesive 22 such as PSA functions as the base layer 12 which closes the container 9. A ribbon reinforced with filament, narrower or reinforced fastening tape is strip 14 of tearable tape and is laminated to base layer 12 tear-resistant, to adhesive. The cuts 30 through the tape 10 initiate the tear points. The cuts 30 are located through both the base layer 12 and the strip 14 of strip tape of the tape 10. The tape 10 is applied to the container 9. The end tabs 32 formed at the end of the tape assist in the opening of the container 9. In an alternative embodiment, shown in Figure 3, the terminal tabs 32 can be placed flat against the container 9 during shipping and distribution. In this version, the cuts 30 start from the end of the belt 10 in such a location that they pass through only the base layer 12. The distance between the cuts 30 is greater than the width of the terminal tongue 32. As shows, the cuts are then directed to pass through the part of the tear strip strip 14 as well as the base layer. This change in direction is shown as a smooth curve, but it can be used in any way. The key to this feature is that at the end of the tape, the terminal tab 32 includes part of the tape 10 with adhesive 22 to allow the adhesive of the closure cap to be slightly retained on the bag, while the terminal tab 32 it has at least one portion extending through strip 14 of tearable tape. In another embodiment shown in Figure 4, the tape 40 includes a tape cover 42 which is a strip of film tape, such as a box sealing tape made of biaxially oriented polypropylene. The tape layer 42 includes a backing 44 and an adhesive 46. This tape layer 42 is not tear-resistant when worn. & = Sjg £ a¿ **? ~ * 3t? i3k £ +. short, but it provides good closing resistance at low cost. The narrower, tear-off strip 14 is laminated to a tear-resistant tape 12 and a similar width, such as a # 8883 tape of 3M. The tear strip strip 14 includes a base layer 24 and an adhesive 26 and the tear resistant tape 12 includes a base layer 16 'and an adhesive 22' although the adhesive is not required. The tear-resistant tape 12 is located only in the area where its function is required, the area that is placed between the two portions of the container 9 that adhere to each other to close the container. (It is noted that if a box sealing tape with RST is used without a tear-resistant film, the cuts in the RST will spread too easily). This embodiment, like Figure 1, prevents the tear from propagating prematurely, yet allows a person to pull the terminal tab 32 to easily open the container 9. This structure can be formed in several ways. One way is that the tear-resistant tape 12, such as tape # 8883, made by 3M, St. Paul, Minnesota, can be laminated between the layer 42 of the box sealing tape and the strip 14 of tearable tape in the box. point of application. In another method, an RST tape could be used as the tear strip strip 14 and the tear-resistant tape 12 could be removed (tape # 8883 from 3M) and provided to a customer in the form of a roll. This will apply to the layer 42 of box sealing tape at the point of application. Still another method comprises placing all the layers together during manufacture. A tear-resistant tape 12 is coated or laminated to a strip 14 of tearable tape. This multi-layer configuration is then attached to a layer 42 of tape including a backing 44 and an adhesive 46. Figure 5 shows a modality where there is no adhesive in the tear-resistant layer. The tear-resistant base layer 16 is only located between the tape layer 42 and the tear strip strip 14 to form the tape 50. In one example, a 20 kg (44 pound) bag of canine food was closed with a strip 40.6 cm (16 inches) long base layer 12 tear-resistant adhesive 48 mm wide, such as COITO tape # 8883 from 3M, which has a backing 16 of LLDPE of 0.008 cm (3 mils) and a PSA sticker 22. (The ribbon # 8883 of 3M is ura ^ J- - ** o. ..: AAa = at "stretchable tape" which is used herein for its tear resistance properties). A 12 mm wide strip of strip 14 of tear-off tape (RST tape # 864 of 3M) was applied and cuts 30 were formed at the ends to create the terminal tabs 32. This bag was subjected to drop tests in accordance with the standards of ASTM D5276. The 76 cm (30 in.) Falls were made in e.L front, back, two sides and two ends of the bag. The bag ended the six falls without opening. The bag was then lifted several times by its "ears", the notches formed by the triangular plates of reinforcement, without opening and without propagation of the cuts. The bag opened easily when pulling the tongue. A similar canine food bag was closed with a tape that has a 48 mm wide box sealing tape (3M tape # 372) laminated to a # 8883 3M tape of 12mm width and tape # 864 of 3M 12 mm wide. Some bags were also closed with a 48 mm wide box sealing tape structure and a 12 mm wide laminated product of # 864 tape of 3M and a LLDPE film of 0.008 cm (3 mils) and other bags closed ... with a LDPE film of 0.010 cm (4 mils). This structure also completed the drop tests and the lifting tests equally well, followed by an easy opening. To measure the forces required to open the tape structures, tests were carried out on a high speed detachment test system ZPE 1000 from Instrumentors, Inc. The tests were carried out at 0.5 m / s (which is representative of the actual speed used by the end users) and the force required to pull a tongue (with two tears through the tape) was measured in Newtons. The following table summarizes the results. Tests at other speeds were also carried out. The results at these speeds were predictable; lower speeds produced increased forces and higher speeds produced decreased forces. At all speeds, there were similar strength differences between the various tape samples.
This table illustrates that the use of a tear-resistant film (tape # 8883 of 3M in the examples) in the structure significantly increases the force required to tear and thus decreases the opportunity for premature opening of the container. If a normal strip tear strip such as # 8612 ce 3M (with cuts along the sides) is used with # 8882, the LLDPE backing deforms and lengthens but does not provide a functional tear. However, an example that uses a single tape construction of stretchable tape # 8883 does not work well. The ribbon broke without tearing along its length. In alternative embodiments, a ribbon can be made from a stretchable tape (such as # 8883 from 3M). This tape can be made: resistant to tearing at its ends when applying a tongue, such as a conventional paper tab. In this configuration, the cuts or perforations extend for the entire length of the tape. This version works well when the tear tape is strong at least in the region between the two rows of perforations. The reinforcement of the tapes can be done by any known reinforcement method. For example, cords or filaments can be used. Also, the material used for the tongue can be used along the entire length of the tape. In another embodiment, shown in Figures 6 and 7, a container 60 includes a tape for sealing the container. The container 60 can be flexible and can be a bag. The tape may be a strip 62 of tearable tape and may be part of L container 60 in a manner to simplify the tape. For example, the container 60 can dye: a flap 64 to close the container. The fin 64 has first and second major surfaces and is formed from a tear-resistant film. The film is defined as being continuous and filled with different material from laminated material. (Laminated material is defined as a material that is made of fibers.) The fibers can be covered with felt, entangled, beaten or refined and can be made of cellulose, as with traditional paper or other materials including synthetic materials and plastics that can be join together). The fin 64 can be weakened (such as by grooves, perforations, score lines) along subsequent tear lines. As shown, flap 64 is unstrengthened. Without weakening means that there are no grooves, perforations, or marking lines in the fin, the fin is untreated in some way proposed to weaken it. The tear tape 62 and flap 64 may have the cut 70 at its ends to facilitate the start of the opening process.
These cuts 70 can form a tongue and do not weaken the flap 64 because the flap is made of a tear-resistant plastic. The flap 64 need not be weakened because the strip 62 of tear tape makes the tear-resistant film otherwise relatively easy to tear to open the container. This is a significant difference from the known laminated casings and containers that require weakening in order to function well. The weakening comprises additional manufacturing steps and increased costs. The container 60 includes a mechanism, such as an adhesive glue 66, which adheres the first major surface of the fin to the container to close the container. The adhesive 66 can be coated on at least part of the first main side of the fin 64, or on at least part of the container 60, or both. The adhesive 66 can optionally be protected by a release liner before the container 60 is closed. The strip 62 of tear tape is located on either or both of the first and second major surfaces of the fin 64. The strip 62 of tape The tear-off allows tearing of the same and flap 64 with a force notwithstanding that the flap 64 of tear-resistant film can not be clearly torn apart in any other way. If the tear strip strip 62 is located on the first major surface of the fin 64, the tear of the strip of tear tape is torn through the flap. In this version, an optional cover tape 68 can be placed on the second major surface of the fin 64, opposite the strip of tear tape, as shown in Figure 6. The cover tape 68 improves the ability to tear clearly through fin 64, perhaps by restricting the lengthening of the fin during tearing. This is shown by the decreased force required by Example 2, which uses a box sealing tape, as compared to Example 1, which does not. Various tapes can be used as a cover tape 68 including the diapositively oriented polypropylene box seal tape (BOPP) # 371, PET box seal tape # 355, acetate tape # 821, and polyvinyl chloride tape # 600 (PVC), all made by 3M, St. Paul, Minnesota. These tapes have all a smaller elongation than the film used for the fin 64.
The fin 64 can be made of LLDPE, LDPE, molded polypropylene, and mixtures of Kraton and polypropylene. The strip 62 of tear tape can be RST, tensioned polypropylene, and tape reinforced with filaments. Also, the tear strip strip 62 may include filaments, strands or both, formed on either or both of the first and second side.
DECLARATION THAT DOES NOT INCLUDE PROCESS It is noted that in relation to this date, the best method known by the applicant to carry out the aforementioned invention, is the conventional one for the manufacture of the objects to which it refers.
Having described the invention as above, the content of the following is claimed as property.
