Description

LONG ABSORBENT ARTICLE. INTEGRATED. WHICH HAS ADHESIVE TO HOLD THE IMPREGNATED TROUSER FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to absorbent articles such as sanitary napkins, catamenial inserts or for adult incontinence which are used in combination with the above garments. The absorbent articles according to the present invention have a minimum length of 255 mm, ie, these are relatively long absorbent articles, and are provided with a fastening adhesive to secure them to the undergarment during use. In particular, the present invention relates to these absorbent articles that are made of several layers, which are joined together by integrating adhesive connections. A fastening adhesive with an asymmetry with respect to the longitudinal direction is provided and at least one of the integral adhesive connections is at least coextensive with the fastening adhesive.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The adhesive adhesives for sanitary napkins are well known in the art. Normally these cover part of the surface that gives the garment of the sanitary napkins. The adhesive allows the improved fixation of the towels to the undergarment when the product is applied and during use. The dimensions of these fastening adhesives of the panty are influenced by several factors. One aspect is that these should cover an area as large as possible in order to provide firm attachment of the towel to the undergarment. On the other hand, the adhesive should not extend to areas that may possibly be attached to the user's skin since these would cause unacceptable discomfort when using the product. Therefore, when the crotch portion of an undergarment is typically considered products that have been provided with an adhesive along the longitudinal length of the sanitary napkin so that the adhesive can not extend beyond a width smaller crotch of the undergarment minus a certain margin of safety to allow variation in the placement of the sanitary napkin in the undergarment depending on the user's accuracy. The other aspect when deciding on the dimensions of the panty fastening adhesive is how to provide the panty fastening adhesive on the surface that gives the garment a sanitary napkin in a mass production process. Many processes have been considered in this regard. European Patent EP-A-745 386 discloses the printing of the fastening adhesives of the panty in order to allow any form of the fastening adhesives of the pantyhose that are provided. However, it is still very common to provide the fastening adhesives of the panty by continuous coating or continuous spraying. The fastening adhesive for the panty is applied while the sanitary towel moves on a band or strap in the longitudinal direction. This automatically results in straight adhesive dimensions, which, when combined with an on-off switch of the adhesive application system, creates a rectangular strip, or a series of rectangular strips, on the surface that gives the garment Wear a sanitary towel. By default these strips can not reach towards a region of the sanitary napkin, which extend beyond the smallest transverse direction, that is, the width, of a sanitary napkin. In practical terms, adhesive needs to be even smaller in order not to extend to the peripheral edges of the sanitary napkin in the crotch region, since this is also known to cause problems in comfort for the user, as compared for example in WO 92. / 04000. In U.S. Patent No. 4,690,680, a rectangular adhesive design was suggested in which the adhesive is wider at the front and rear of the article and less wide at the center. In consecuense, it has become usual to provide sanitary napkins with a single or a plurality of rectangular longitudinal strips of the panty fastening adhesive on its surface that gives the garment. This is acceptable for relatively short sanitary napkins less than 255 mm, typically less than 240 mm. However, sanitary napkins that extend over a longer length are also exposed for greater variation in the forces they exert (for example, they extend from the crotch region beyond the pubic mound or more). beyond the anus to the region of the buttocks) and therefore benefit from the better fixation to the undergarment, especially at the ends. Another reason not to exceed a maximum width in the crotch area of a panty fastening adhesive (even if a sanitary napkin would provide a wider adhesive area than this certain width) is that the width of the crotch of the legs interiors is limited and consequently providing adhesive beyond this crotch width is not useful but instead counterproductive as this can expose the adhesive to the wearer's skin. However, this is not the case outside the crotch region of the undergarment where the undergarment widens outward towards the front portion and towards the rear portion covering the buttocks. Based on the foregoing, an object of the present invention is to provide long sanitary napkins, and in particular those which are formed asymmetrically, i.e., having a longer and / or wider front or back portion with better attachment to the undergarment without violating the fundamental condition of comfort (ie, not extending beyond the crotch width of the inner leg with the adhesive) and simplicity of manufacture, for example, by using adhesive coating or spray without further variation than a switch-disconnect switch mechanism. The foregoing has led to the development of a panty fastening adhesive that is wider in one of the front or back portion than in the center as disclosed in the European application 97119753. However this creates another problem mainly that the transmission of the forces internally between the layers of the article needs to be sufficient to retain the total article in place at least through the region of the adhesive that gives the panty. This is now achieved by means of the present invention.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to absorbent articles such as a sanitary napkin for use on an undergarment having a garment facing surface and having a longitudinal center line and a perpendicular transverse centerline of the longitudinal centerline, the which define a longitudinal direction and a transverse direction. The sanitary napkin comprises other regions, a first region in the center having a length of at least 40 mm to cover the area in a wearer between the perineum and the forwardmost point of the labia majora during use. A second region extends in the longitudinal direction on one side of the first region and a third region extending on the opposite side of the first region. The second region is preferably longer than the third region such that the sanitary napkin is used in an asymmetric manner. The length in the longitudinal direction of the sanitary napkin is at least 255 mm, preferably 270 mm and most preferably 300 mm or more. The surface that gives the garment of the sanitary napkin comprises an adhesive for fixing the sanitary napkin to an undergarment. The adhesive extends from the second region through the first region to the third region and has a width dimension in the transverse direction at least at a point in the second region, which is larger than the width in any of the first or third region. More particularly, the adhesive in the first and third regions is provided in a rectangular pattern relative to the center lines and has a width in the transverse direction of between 35 and 60 mm, while the adhesive in at least one point in the second region it has a width in the transverse direction greater than the width of the first and second regions, preferably in the range of 45 to 100 mm. In an even more preferable embodiment, the adhesive in the second region is also rectangular with respect to the center lines. The absorbent article comprises at least three components, a topsheet generally permeable to liquid, a backsheet generally impermeable to liquid, and an absorbent core between the topsheet and the backsheet. Each of the components of the article has a surface that gives the garment and a surface that gives the user and at least one of the surfaces that give the user of the components are at least partially bound by the adhesive to the surface which gives the garment of an immediately adjacent component. This forms an integrating connection between the surfaces whose integrating connection remains intact during normal use of the article. In particular according to the present invention, at least one of the integrating connections is at least coextensive with the fastening adhesive of the panty on the side facing the garment of the article. In a preferred embodiment according to the present invention, all the layer components of the absorbent core towards the backsheet are joined together with the integrating connections which are all at least coextensive with the fastening adhesive. In an even more preferred embodiment according to the present invention which provides the most controlled attachment of the article to the undergarment, all the components of the article are provided with integrating connections between the layers and all of these integrating connections are at least coextensive with the fastening adhesive of the panty. In another embodiment according to the present invention, the absorbent article also comprises wings, which are well known in the art. The wings extend to a length of at least 80% of the first central region of the sanitary napkin and preferably extend no more than 20% of the length of the third region in the third region, although even more preferably the wings do not extend further. 50% of the length of the second region in the second region.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Figure 1 shows a plan view of a sanitary napkin surface of the prior art. Figure 2 shows a preferred embodiment of a sanitary napkin according to the present invention with a fastening adhesive on the surface that gives the garment of the towel. Figure 3 shows an alternative embodiment of the present invention with a fastening adhesive on the garment facing surface with different dimensions on one side of the longitudinal center line as a first alternative and on the other side of the center line longitudinal as a second alternative.
Figure 4 shows another alternative embodiment according to the present invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION According to the present invention, an absorbent article for use in combination with an undergarment has an adhesive for attaching the article to the undergarment. The design of the adhesive is particularly adjusted to the dimensions of the article and is asymmetric in the longitudinal direction and in use reaches a region in the undergarment distant from the center of the crotch. The layered components of the articles are fixed to each other to integrate them during use. In particular, sanitary napkins, catamenial products and pantiprotectors, if used for incontinence or menstruation discharges or other discharges, are considered to be susceptible to the present invention. Typically, these articles are layered construction with each layer or group of layers and the article having a surface facing the garment which is oriented to give in the direction of the garment during the use of the article and a surface that It gives towards the user giving in the opposite direction. Typically, these articles comprise a liquid permeable top sheet forming the surface that gives the user of the article an absorbent core and a breathable back sheet forming the garment facing surface of the article. The absorbent core is interposed between the top sheet and the back sheet.
COMPONENTS OF THE ABSORBENT ARTICLE The upper sheet In general, the top sheet must have good liquid retention to maintain a dry surface and thus keep the user's skin dry; the absorbent core needs to provide sufficient absorbent capacity and the backsheet must avoid rewetting (liquid permeability) to retain the absorbed fluid while being preferably breathable. The top sheet is docile, soft feeling and non-irritating to the user's skin. The upper sheet can also have elastic characteristics that allow it to be stretched in one or two directions in part of the upper sheet or in all of its extension. In addition, the top sheet is permeable to liquids, allowing fluids (eg, menstruation and / or urine) to easily penetrate through its thickness. A suitable top sheet can be manufactured from a wide range of materials such as woven and non-woven materials; polymeric materials such as thermoplastic films formed with openings; plastic films with openings, and hydroformed thermoplastic films; and thermoplastic canvases. Woven and non-woven materials may be composed of natural fibers (for example, wood or cotton fibers), synthetic fibers (for example, polymer fibers such as polyester, polypropylene or polyethylene fibers) or a combination of fibers natural and synthetic or two or multi-component fibers. Preferred top sheets for use in the present invention are typically selected from upper non-woven top sheets and top sheets of apertured film. They are especially films formed with openings for the upper sheets because they are permeable to body exudates and still non-absorbent and have a reduced tendency to allow fluids to pass back and rewet the user's skin. In this way, the surface of the formed film that is in contact with the user remains dry, thus reducing the staining of the body and creating a more comfortable feeling for the user. Suitable formed films are described in U.S. Patent No. 3,929,135; U.S. Patent No. 4,324,246; U.S. Patent No. 4,342,314; U.S. Patent No. 4,463,045; and in U.S. Patent No. 5,006,394. The upper sheets of formed film with particularly preferred micro apertures are disclosed in U.S. Patent No. 4,609,519 and U.S. Patent No. 4,629,643. A preferred top sheet of the present invention comprises the formed film described in one or more of the above patents and which is marketed in sanitary napkins by The Procter & Gamble Company of Cincinnati, Ohio as "DRI-WEAVE". The upper sheets which do not have a homogeneous distribution of liquid passage are also contemplated by the present invention such as, for example, only a part of the upper sheet comprising liquid passage or a film with openings of various sizes. Typically, these upper sheets would have the liquid passages oriented such that they result in a centrally permeable upper sheet and peripherally impermeable for liquids. The surface that gives the user of the formed film top sheet can be hydrophilic to help transfer the liquid through the top sheet faster than if the body surface were not hydrophilic. In a preferred embodiment, the polymeric materials of the formed film topsheet is incorporated as described in PCT publication WO 93/09741. Alternatively, the surface that gives the user of the topsheet can be made hydrophilic by treating it with a surfactant such as is described in U.S. Patent No. 4,950,254.
Another alternative is the so-called hybrid top sheets, which incorporate particularly useful fibrous and film-like structures, the embodiments of these hybrid top sheets are disclosed in PCT publications WO 93/09744; WO 93/11725 or WO 93/11726. The topsheet typically extends through the entire absorbent structure and out of the coextensive area with absorbent structure. When referring to the top sheet, a multilayer structure or a single layer structure is contemplated. The aforementioned hybrid top sheet is such a multi-layer design but other multi-layer top sheets such as the primary and secondary top sheet designs are also considered.
The nucleus Placed in fluid communication with, and typically underlying the top sheet is the absorbent core. The absorbent core provides the fluid storage and distribution function and may also comprise multiple layers. The core may comprise any normal absorbent material or combinations thereof. This preferably comprises gelling absorbent materials normally referred to as "hydrogel", "superabsorbent", "hydrocolloid" materials in combination with suitable carriers. The gelling absorbent materials suitable for use herein will very often comprise a polymeric gelling material, partially neutralized, lightly crosslinked, substantially insoluble in water. This material forms a hydrogel upon contact with water. These polymeric materials can be prepared from acid-containing, unsaturated, polymerizable monomers, such as acrylic acid, which are well known in the art.
Suitable carriers include materials that are conventionally used in absorbent structures such as natural, modified or synthetic fibers, particularly modified cellulose fibers, or unmodified, in the form of fluff or tissue. Suitable carriers can also be used in conjunction with the gelling absorbent material, however, they can also be used alone or in combinations. Tissue or tissue laminates are very preferred within the context of this article. One embodiment of the core, particularly useful in the application of the present invention, comprises a double-layer tissue laminate which can be formed by folding the tissue on itself. These layers can be joined together. The gelling absorbent material or other optional material may be comprised between the layers. The absorbent core may also include components optionally normally present in absorbent webs such as odor control agents, in particular suitable zeolites or silicas.
The back sheet The back sheet mainly prevents the exudates absorbed and contained within the absorbent core from wetting the articles that are in contact with the absorbent product such as underpants, pants, pajamas and undergarments. The backsheet is preferably impermeable to liquids (e.g., menstruation and / or urine) and is manufactured in a customary fashion from a thin plastic film.
The backsheet typically extends through the entire absorbent core and can extend over and become part of the top sheet by bending around the absorbent core. In this manner a configuration of the topsheet as disclosed in U.S. Patent No. 4,342,314, column 16, lines 47-62, can be achieved without the requirement of selectively punching the topsheet. Preferably, the backsheet also provides breathability to the absorbent article by being at least permeable to water vapor, preferably permeable to air. The backsheet may be a laminate, for example, of a combination of microporous film and / or non-woven material, and / or film formed with openings. The breathability if desired may be limited to the periphery or center of the backsheet or this may be throughout the entire back sheet.
The fastening adhesive of the pant The sanitary napkin comprises an area of adhesive on its surface that gives the garment whose adhesive is protected by a cover means, which cover means is detached before using the article. The adhesive area need not be entirely covered by the adhesive but can, for example, be provided by homogeneously distributed adhesive filaments leaving small areas uncovered between the filaments. Alternatively, the "adhesive area" according to the present invention can be provided by adhesive sub-portions and this is then defined as the area formed by the shortest possible line enclosing all these sub-portions, however excluding those in the wings As can be seen in the sanitary napkin 20 of the prior art of Figure 1, the garment-facing side 40 which is typically provided by a backsheet impervious to the liquid of said sanitary napkin, comprises an adhesive 50.
In general, sanitary napkins have a longitudinal centerline L and a transverse centerline T. In the prior art sanitary napkin of Figure 1, the transverse centerline T is located in the middle portion of the sanitary napkin, i.e. , this separates the sanitary towel in two halves that are approximately equal length in the longitudinal direction. The sanitary napkin shown is also symmetrical in the longitudinal direction with respect to the transverse center line T. In contrast, a sanitary napkin according to the present invention such as the sanitary napkins shown in Figures 2, 3 or 4, has a line transverse central T which separates a towel into two halves that are not substantially identical in length. The transverse centerline T is located in a first region or central region of a sanitary napkin. The first region has an extension in the longitudinal direction sufficient and intended to cover the area in a user between the perineum and the point beyond the labia majora. Based on medical studies, it varies from about 40 mm to 80 mm in the average woman depending on sexual activity, births of babies and other factors. Therefore, the minimum length of the first region is 40 mm but would preferably be at least 60 mm, more preferably at least 80 mm and most preferably at least 112 mm. The transverse centerline separates the first region into two halves in the longitudinal direction, which are substantially of equal length. This is obviously the case for the conventional sanitary napkins of the prior art or for the sanitary napkins of the present invention. Sanitary napkins having a first region 1 according to the above definition also have a second (2) and a third (3) regions outside the first region, which are extending from the first region (1) towards the longitudinal ends of the sanitary napkin. As can be seen from Figures 2, 3 and 4, sanitary napkins according to the present invention have a second region (2) which is longer than the third region (3). A panty fastening adhesive 50 on prior art sanitary napkins, which are longitudinally symmetrical as shown in Figure 1, will naturally extend an equal distance from the first region 1 to the second (2) and the third region (3). In contrast, sanitary napkins according to the present invention have an adhesive attachment of the undergarment 50, which extends preferably in the longitudinal direction more than the first region (1) to the second region (2), then it extends. from the first region to the third region (3), as shown in Figures 2, 3 and 4. In accordance with the present invention, the width in the transverse direction of the adhesive of the second region (2) is wider in at least one point that the width of the adhesive in the first region (1) and in the third region (3). Figure 2 shows a particularly preferred form of adhesive in which the adhesive is provided in a rectangular pattern, which is easy to provide when sanitary napkins are continuously manufactured in the longitudinal direction. Two alternative forms satisfying the width requirement according to the present invention are shown in Figure 3 on the right and left side of the longitudinal axis. Both of the adhesive designs 50 shown in Figure 3 also comprise non-rectangular parts. Another preferred embodiment is shown in Figure 4 in which the widest portion of the adhesive 50 in the second region 2 is provided in a semi-oval shape. It is also possible that the adhesive 50 in the wider portion of the adhesive in the second region (2) of the sanitary napkins according to the present invention may comprise a different amount of adhesive than the adhesive in the first region or the second region. . For example, the pattern shown in Figure 2 can be provided by coating an adhesive in the longitudinal direction through three coating means (e.g., slot coaters or spray nozzles). A coating means providing a central rectangular area 54 extending from the third region (3) through the first region (1) to the second region (2) (indicated by the dashes in the second region (2)) and being similar to the adhesive shown in Figure 1 for prior art sanitary napkins. In addition, areas of adhesive (54) extending beyond the rectangular portion (52) in the second region (2) of the sanitary napkin are provided by two additional coating means, which can provide the same amount of adhesive per second. or area can provide a different amount of adhesive per area than the central coating means. In principle, it would also be possible to provide different adhesives through the different coating means. In this context, also the adhesive strips instead of a completely coated surface can be provided. Then, the adhesive area shown in Figure 2 is the area within the shortest possible line enclosing all the sub-portions, excluding the adhesive on the wings (not shown in Figure 2). The same applies for Figures 3 and 4. In an alternate way of providing the adhesive to the surface that gives the garment (40) of a sanitary napkin according to the present invention, it would also be possible to provide the total area in which the adhesive is wider in the second region (2) by a separate coating means while the adhesive in the first and third regions of the sanitary napkin is provided by conventional adhesive coating means such as those used for sanitary napkins of the prior art according to Figure 1. As noted above, sanitary napkins according to the present invention are preferably provided with wings or fins extending beyond the width of the crotch of the undergarment and which are folded around of the crotch of the inner garment for protection of the lateral edges of the undergarment. Sanitary towels with wings are shown in the preferred embodiments of Figures 2 and 3, while the wings are not mandatory but only preferred within the context of the present invention as they provide additional fixation of sanitary napkins, particularly towels very long sanitary Preferably, as indicated in the discussion of the above background, the width of the adhesive in the first region is such that it extends near the lateral edges of the towel as shown in Figure 4. The adhesive for securing the article in An undergarment can be any adhesive useful for the desired application. Normally, this is a pressure sensitive adhesive that can be applied in any manner usual in the art. In particular, the application of the adhesive can be by the use of the contact application means, such as coating by printing or scraping or slot coating or by non-contact application, such as curtain, spray or spiral coating. The adhesive can not be coated as a thermal melt or from a cold solution, either to the surface that gives the garment of the article or to the covering means which then leads to the article. The adhesive needs to be adapted for the desired application, for example, it needs to withstand the breathability if it is used in a breathable sanitary napkin. The adhesion strength of the adhesive to the surface that gives the garment of the article needs to be greater than or equal to the adhesion strength, which it has for the covering means. Also, it is desirable to have an adhesive that does not separate during the use of the article and leave adhesive residues on the undergarment when the article is separated from the undergarment.
Uniting the components of the article together In accordance with the present invention the components of the absorbent article are joined together in an integral manner. The objective being to ensure that the forces in a direction perpendicular to the layered components can be transmitted between the layers of the components such that all the components of the article are held to the undergarment in a controlled manner through the improved arrangement. of the fastening adhesive of the pant. In order to achieve this, the surface that it gives to the user and the surface that it gives to the garment of the layers of the components are joined together by an adhesive connection. The adhesive can be any that is usual in the art and its application can also be any conventional application. The preferred applications are the same as mentioned above for the panty fastening adhesive. This adhesive connection does not have to extend through the total surface area of the article but in order to provide its integral function it needs to extend at least through the same area as the panty fastening adhesive. By this, an integrating connection between the layers is obtained when an adhesive connection is provided between the layers of the components of the article, whose connection is coextensive with or extending more of the fastening adhesive of the panty. The benefit of this integrating connection is already achieved when at least one of the layers of the components of the article with said integrating connections is provided. It is highly preferable that the components that provide the majority of the rigidity or structural stability of the article are integrated with the fastening adhesive of the pant through the integrating adhesive connections. Usually the stiffness or structural stability of the article is mainly provided by the absorbent core component of the article and accordingly it is preferred that all the layers between the backsheet and the absorbent core are integrated in an area coextensive with or extending beyond the adhesive of the panties. Even more preferred would be, of course, a design in which all the layers of the article are provided with an adhesive connection which integrates them in the area at least coextensive with the adhesive of the pant. An additional benefit other than the control of the components of the article with respect to the undergarment during use is the handling of the absorbent article when it is manipulated from the condition in which it is provided to the user towards a condition in which the latter is provided. It is used. In other words, the article without the integrating connections according to the present invention has a higher probability of being handled improperly such as, for example, wrinkled or deformed already upon the occurrence of the placement on the previous garment. It will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that the foregoing explanations and embodiments are disclosed for the purpose of illustration and training, but that the present invention is defined by the limits given in the claims.
