Description

TISU PRODUCTS CONTAINING ESTERS OF CARBOXYLIC ACIDS OF POLIOXIETI ENO alkyl eter BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION In the manufacture of tissue products, such as facial and bath tissues, continuous efforts have been made to make the tissues softer and more attractive to the consumer. For this purpose, chemical addition has been used more frequently when the softening effects of a variety of chemicals have been discovered. Notwithstanding this, there is a need for further improvement of the feeling qualities of such tissues.
SYNTHESIS OF THE INVENTION It has now been discovered that a superior tissue with a smooth, silky smooth feel may be produced by incorporating into the tissue an aqueous softening composition containing an ester compound of a fatty or carboxylic acid.
Therefore in one aspect, the invention resides in a tissue product comprising an amount of about 0.01% by dry weight, of a carboxylic acid ester having the following general formula: I I I I RO (C3H60) x (CH2CH20) and- (CH2) ll-C-0- (CH2CH20) _R where : R is a straight or branched alkyl group having a carbon chain length of C8-C24 or a straight or branched aliphatic group having a carbon chain length of C8- R 'is a straight or branched alkyl group having a carbon chain length of C_-C24 or a straight or branched aliphatic group having a carbon chain length of C8-C24; m = 0-100, more specifically 0-10, and more specifically still 1-6; x = 0-500, more specifically 0-20, and even more specifically 0-10; y = 2-1000, more specifically 2-200, and even more specifically 6-100; z = 0-1000, more specifically 0-200, and even more specifically 0-100.
In another aspect the invention resides in a method for making soft tissue product comprising: (a) depositing an aqueous suspension of fibers to make paper on a forming fabric to form a wet fabric; (b) drying the fabric to form a tis sheet wherein an amount of about 0.01% by weight of a carboxylic acid one is applied to the surface of the fabric, said ester having the following general formula: O i i I I R0 (C3Hs0) x (CH2C__20) - (CH,), -c-o- (C__2CH, Q) _R ' where : R is a straight or branched alkyl group having a C8-C24 carbon chain length or a straight branched lifatic group having a carbon chain length of C8-C24; R 'is a straight or branched alkyl group having a Cx-C24 carbon chain length or a rectified or branched phallic group having a carbon chain length of C8 ^ -24 / tn = 0-100, more specifically 0-10, and even more specifically 1 6; x = 0-500, more specifically 0-20, and even more specifically 0 10; y = 2-1000, more specifically 2-200, and even more specifically 6-100; and z = 0-1000, more specifically 0-200, and even more specifically 0-100 In a further aspect the invention resides in a method for making a soft tissue sheet comprising. (a) depositing an aqueous suspension of fibers to make paper on a forming fabric to form a wet te id, said aqueous suspension of fibers for making paper comprises 0.01% or more by dry weight based on the fiber, of a carboxylic acid ester; (b) drying the wet fabric to form a tissue sheet, wherein said carboxylic acid ester has the following general formula: i i i R0 (C3H60) x (CH2CH20) - (CH2) -C-0- (CH2CH20) _R ' where : R is a straight or branched alkyl group having a carbon chain length of C8-C24 or a rectified or branched aliphatic group having a carbon chain length of C8 R 'is a straight or branched alkyl group having a carbon chain length of C1-C24 or a straight or branched aliphatic group having a carbon chain length of C8- ^ -24 m = 0-100, plus specifically 0-10, and even more specifically 1-6; x = 0-500, more specifically 0-20, and even more specifically 0-10; y = 2-1000, more specifically 2-200, and even more specifically 6-100; and z = 0-1000, more specifically 0-200, and even more specifically 0-100.
The carboxylic acid esters useful for the purposes of this invention can be synthesized using conventional methods known to those skilled in the chemical arts. Specifically, these compounds can be made by ethoxylation and / or propoxylation of a straight branched primary alcohol with a C8-C24 carbon chain, followed by carboxylation (e.g., Williamson synthesis) of the resulting alkoxylated product. Suitable primary alcohols include but are not limited to n-octyl, n-nonyl, n-decyl, n-undecyl, n-dodecyl, n-tridecyl, n-tetradecyl, lauryl, oleyl, parmitoleyl, stearyl, isodecyl, isostearyl and Similar. The degree of alkoxylation can be tailored for the desired water solubility. For example, higher degrees of ethoxylation usually give higher hydrophilic / lipophilic balance (HLB) values. As a result, the compounds disperse or solubilize in water more rapidly. To obtain satisfactory water solubility, the number of oxyethylene units in any single molecule must not be less than 5-6. In contrast to ethoxylation, increasing the propoxylation level reduces the solubility in water. In general, it is preferable to have no more than 8 oxypropylene units in a single molecule. The resulting carboxylated acid undergoes a final esterification process where it is reacted with another primary alcohol, with a carbon chain length of C 1 -C 24, a fatty alcohol with a carbon chain length of C 8 -C 24. In cases where both oxyethylene and oxypropylene units are present in a single molecule, it is preferable to have the degree of ethoxylation / propoxylation of from about 1 to about 20, more specifically from about 2 to about 10. , and even more specifically from around 2 to around 6.
The amount of added carboxylic acid ester can be from about 0.01% by dry weight or more, based on the weight of the fiber. More specifically, the amount can be from about 0.01 to about 5% by dry weight, and, even more specifically from about 0.05% to about 1% by dry weight. The carboxylic acid ester can be added to the supply before the wet fabric is formed, or it can be applied to the wet fabric after forming and before drying, or it can be applied to the dried fabric. Suitable means for applying the carboxylic acid ester to the fabric include spraying and printing.
EXAMPLES Example 1. A single layer tissue having a basis weight of 6 pounds per 2880 square feet was made with a supply comprising 60% by weight of eucalyptus fibers and 40% by weight of softwood kraft fibers from the north. The supply was deposited on a forming fabric in the form of an aqueous suspension to form a wet fabric. Prior to forming, an imidesolinium-based softener / softener (C-6027, from Witco Corporation) was added to the fiber suspension in an amount of 2 kilograms of softener / binder per metric ton of fiber. After forming, the wet fabric was sprayed with an aqueous solution of a carboxylic acid ester of the formula: C12_1SH25_310 (C2H40) 8CH2COOC3H7. The amount of the carboxylic acid ester in the aqueous suspension was about 0.2% by weight. The aggregate amount of the carboxylic acid ester retained on the wet tissue was about 0.2% by dry weight based on the fiber. The wet tissue was then dried completely to form a soft tissue. The resulting tissue was softer than both an untreated control tissue and a control tissue containing only the wet end addition of the same softener / binder based on imidesolinium. The tissue of this invention also has an improved surface smoothness.
Example 2. A single stratum tissue having a basis weight of 16 pounds by 2880 square feet was made with a supply comprising 50% by weight of eucalyptus fibers 50% by weight of kraft fibers of soft northern wood. The supply was deposited on a forming fabric in the form of an aqueous suspension to form a wet fabric. After the formation, the wet tissue was sprayed with an aqueous solution of a carboxylic acid ester of the formula: C10H21O (C3H6O) 2 (C2H4O) ß.7CH2COOC3H7. The amount of the carboxylic acid ester in the aqueous solution was about 0.2% by weight. The aggregate amount of the carboxylic acid ester retained in the wet tissue was about 0.2% po based on the fiber. The wet tissue was then dried continuously to form a soft tissue. The resulting tis was softer than the untreated control tissue and had a smooth surface feel.
Example 3. A crushed, wet, two-layer creped tissue having a basis weight of about 7.3 pounds per 2880 square feet per layer was made. The tis supply comprised about 60% by dry weight of eucalypt fibers and about 40% by dry weight of softwood kraft fibers of the north. After drying and creping, two similar tissue sheets were put together and crimped together to form the two-ply tissue. Then both layers of the resulting fabric were printed with an aqueous solution of a carboxylic acid ester using a rotogravure printer. The carboxylic acid ester has the formula: C12.15H25.310 (C2H40) 8CH2C00C3H7 The amount of carboxylic acid ester in the aqueous suspension was about 90-95% by weight. The aggregate amount of the carboxylic acid ester retained on the tissue was from about 1-2% by dry weight based on the fiber. The resulting tissue had a smooth top surface and a hand feel compared to that of the untreated control tissue.
It will be appreciated from the previous example, given for the purposes of illustration that it should not be considered as limiting the scope of the invention which is defined by the following claims and all equivalents thereof.
