Description

PREHUMEDED TOWEL FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to disposable cleaning articles and more particularly to pre-moistened towels.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION [0002] Pre-moistened cleaning towels are well known and are referred to as wet towels, wipes and the like. The pre-moistened towels include a substrate, such as a non-woven fabric, pre-moistened with an aqueous lotion. The lotion normally includes one or more surfactant materials (surfactants). The lotion may also include a preservative and a fragrance ingredient (perfume or other flavoring agent). Surfactants in commercially available pre-moistened towels help cleanse the skin. In addition, the surfactants can prevent the precipitation of one or more ingredients of the lotion. For example, in the absence of a sufficient level of surfactant in typical lotion formulations for pre-moistened towels, it is possible that the preservative component and the flavoring agent may interact, resulting in precipitation of the preservative component of the solution. Such precipitation could be avoided to maintain the function of the preservative and prevent the lotion from becoming "cloudy". On the other hand, if the lotion contains a high level of surfactant, the lotion could present during the use a high level of foam formation. However, it has been found that such high levels of foam formation may be undesirable. In particular, it has been found that some users of pre-moistened towels, such as pre-moistened baby towels, perceive that a high level of foaming potentially leads to irritation. Such a perception of possible irritation is especially undesirable in a pre-moistened baby towel. In addition, high levels of foaming may be undesirable for surface cleaning, because the foam may result in a scratched appearance. A commercially available pre-moistened towel marketed by The Procter & Gamble Company as Baby Towels brand PAMPERS RASH CARE, contains a lotion that has a relatively low foam level. These towels have a lotion that includes dimethicone in polymeric beads, as set forth in United States Patent 4,904,524.
While such towels have a low level of foaming, they can be relatively expensive to manufacture. In addition, the handling and processing of the lotion can be difficult due to the insolubility of dimethicone in water. U.S. Patent 5,648,083 issued July 15, 1997 discloses a wet towel product comprising a substrate and an emulsion composition including water, silicone oil including dimethicone and a polymeric emulsifier. While the product disclosed in U.S. Patent 5,648,083 represents a breakthrough in the technical field, it requires the use of an emulsion that prevents phase separation of the silicone component. Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a pre-moistened towel having a relatively low level of surfactant. Another object of the present invention is to provide a pre-moistened towel in which the components of the preservative and / or fragrance are not separated from the phase of the towel lotion. Another object of the present invention is to provide a towel having a silicone-based surfactant that is soluble in water.
P1011 A NONDION SUMMARY The present invention comprises a pre-moistened towel. The towel comprises a substrate moistened with an aqueous lotion comprising a water-soluble silicone-based component. In particular, the towel comprises a non-woven fabric of fibers moistened with a lotion comprising a sulfosuccinate based on silica. Silicone-based sulfosuccinate provides effective and gentle cleansing without a high level of surfactant. further, the sulfosuccinate-based silicone can provide a solubilization function to prevent the precipitation of oil-soluble components, such as components of the fragrance, vitamin extracts, plant extracts and essential oils. In one embodiment, the lotion comprises a silicone copolyol sulfosuccinate selected from the group consisting of disodium sulfosuccinate of dimethicone copolyol and diammonium sulfosuccinate of dimethicone copolyol. The lotion comprises less than about 1.00 weight percent silicone-based sulfosuccinate. In particular, the lotion may comprise less than about 0.20 weight percent of the silicone-based sulfosuccinate. Preferably, the lotion comprises between about 0.8 and 0.10 weight percent of the silicone-based sulfosuccinate.
P1011 The lotion is an aqueous and preferably lotion comprises at least about 85 weight percent water, more preferably at least 90 percent by weight of water and still more preferably at least about 95 weight percent of water. Preferably, the lotion comprises no more than about 1.00 weight percent total surfactant solids, including silicone-based sulfosuccinate solids. The resulting lotion provides gentle and effective cleaning. The substrate may comprise an airlaying web of non-woven fibers and a latex binder and the substrate may have a dry basis weight of at least 40 grams per square meter. The substrate may be moistened with a lotion amount that is at least 100 percent dry weight of the substrate (at least one gram of lotion per gram dry weight of substrate).
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF A NATION The pre-moistened towels of the present invention comprise a substrate moistened with a lotion. The substrate may comprise a woven or nonwoven fabric formed of natural fibers, synthetic fibers or combinations thereof. The lotion comprises an aqueous lotion (at least 50 weight percent water) that P1011 includes a water-soluble silicone-based surfactant. The term "pre-moistened towel" refers to a towel that includes a substrate that is moistened, for example, by wetting the substrate with a liquid composition, before being used by the consumer. In particular, "pre-moistened towel" refers to towels having a substrate that is moistened before being packaged, for example, in a moisture-impermeable container or wrapper. These pre-moistened towels, which are also known as "wet towels" and "wipes", are suitable for use in the cleaning of baby boys and girls, as well as adults of all ages. These towels also include items used for the application of substances in the body, including, but not limited to, application of makeup, skin conditioners, ointments and medications. These towels may also include items of the type used for cleaning and grooming pets and items used for general cleaning of surfaces and objects, such as kitchen surfaces and bathrooms, lenses, athletic and exercise equipment, surfaces automotive and the like. In the sense in which they are used in the present, the terms "percent by weight" or "percent" PÍO11 by weight "refer to the amount by weight of a component in the lotion of the towel as a percentage of the total weight of the lotion. In the sense used herein, the term" water soluble "means that a component is soluble or dispersible (for example, to give a micellar solution) in water at a level of at least 0.25 percent by weight at 25 degrees Centigrade. in the sense it is used herein, the term "surfactant" refers to materials which preferably orient toward an interface, between classes of nonionic surfactants, anionic surfactants, cationic surfactants, amphoteric surfactants, zwitterionic surfactants and mixtures thereof are included. in the sense As used herein, the term "solubilizer" refers to a component that reduces the tendency of one or more of the other components in a lotion composition to separate from the phase of the locus. ion.
SUBSTRATE: Referring to the components of the present invention in greater detail, the pre-moistened towel of the present invention includes a substrate P1011 comprising a woven or non-woven fabric of natural fibers, synthetic fibers or mixtures of natural and synthetic fibers. Suitable natural fibers include, but are not limited to, cellulose fibers, such as wood pulp fibers, cotton and rayon. Suitable synthetic fibers include fibers that are generally used in textiles, including non-exclusively, polyester and polypropylene fibers. Various processing methods can be used to form a suitable fibrous web that is used in the present invention. For example, the fabric may be made by non-woven dry-working techniques, such as laying in the air or alternatively by wet laying, for example in the papermaking machinery. Other non-woven manufacturing techniques may also be used, including non-exclusive techniques such as melting and blowing, spinning, punching and hydroentanglement (or interlacing with water). In one embodiment, the dry fibrous web can be a non-woven fabric laid to the air comprising a combination of natural fibers, discontinuous synthetic fibers and a latex binder. The dry fibrous web can be from about 20 to 80 weight percent of wood pulp fibers, 10 to 60 percent by weight.
P1011 weight of polyester staple fibers and approximately between 10 and 25 weight percent of binder. The dry fibrous web can have a basis weight of approximately 40 to 80 grams per square meter. The density of the dry cloth can be measured after evaporating the liquid from the pre-moistened towel and can be less than about 0.12 grams per cubic centimeter. The density is the basis weight of the dry fabric divided by the dry fabric thickness, determined in consistent units and the dry fabric thickness is measured using a circular loading foot having an area of approximately 2 square inches and which provides a confining pressure of approximately 95 grams per square inch. In one embodiment, the dry fabric can have a basis weight of approximately 64 grams per square meter, a thickness of approximately 0.06 cm and a density of approximately 0.11 grams per cubic centimeter. In one embodiment, the dry fibrous web may comprise at least 50 weight percent wood pulp fibers and more preferably at least about 70 weight percent wood pulp fibers. A particular air-laid nonwoven fabric that is suitable for use in the present invention comprises about 73.5 weight percent cellulosic fibers (Southern softwood Kraft pulps having an average fiber length of about 2.6 mm); about 10.5 weight percent polyester fibers having a denier of about 1.35 grams / 9000 meters of fiber length and a length of discontinuous fibers of about 0.85 inches; and about 16 weight percent of a binder composition comprising a styrene butadiene copolymer. The binder composition can be made using an adhesive latex which is commercially available as Rovene 5550 (49 percent styrene butadiene solids) from Mallard Creek Polymers, Charlotte, N.C. A non-woven air-laid fabric suitable for use in the present invention is the air-laid non-woven fabric used in PAMPERS BABY FRESH baby towels marketed by The Procter & Gamble Co., Cincinnati, Ohio. The pre-moistened towel is made by moistening the dried substrate with at least 1 gram of liquid lotion per gram of dry fibrous fabric. Preferably, the dry substrate is moistened with at least 2.0 and more preferably at least 2.5 grams of liquid lotion per gram of dry fibrous fabric. The following patents are considered part of the present, as a reference in terms of their exposure related to fabrics: United States Patent 3,862,472 issued January 28, 1975; U.S. Patent 3,982,302 issued September 28, 1976; U.S. Patent 4,004,323 issued January 25, 1977; U.S. Patent 4,057,669 issued November 8, 1977; U.S. Patent 4,097,965 issued July 4, 1978; United States Patent 4,176,427 issued December 4, 1979; U.S. Patent 4,130,915 issued December 26, 1978; U.S. Patent 4,135,024 issued January 16, 1979; U.S. Patent 4,189,896 issued February 26, 1980; U.S. Patent 4,207,367 issued June 10, 1980; U.S. Patent 4,296,161 issued October 20, 1981; U.S. Patent 4,309,469 issued January 25, 1982; U.S. Patent 4,682,942 issued July 28, 1987; and U.S. Patents 4,637,859; 5,223,096; 5,240,562; 5,556,509 and 5,580,423. In an alternative embodiment, the substrate may comprise a hydroentangled fabric having a basis weight of about 62 grams per square meter and comprising about 50 weight percent rayon fibers and about 50 weight percent polyester fibers, polypropylene fibers or a combination thereof. In another alternative embodiment, the substrate may comprise a lamination of two outer hydroentangled fabrics, such as non-woven fabrics of polyester fibers having a basis weight of about 30 grams per square meter, attached to an inner constriction layer, which may be form of a net-like "scrim" material that shrinks with heat to give a surface texture in the outer layers. LOTION: The pre-moistened towel of the present invention comprises an aqueous lotion. The preferred lotion contains at least 85 percent by weight of water, more preferably at least 90 percent by weight of water and even more preferably at least 95 percent by weight of water. The lotion also contains a surfactant based on water-soluble silicone. In one embodiment, the lotion comprises a sulfosuccinate surfactant based on anionic silicone. Suitable counterions include the alkali metal derivatives (eg, sodium, potassium)yes. ; those of alkaline earth metals (eg, magnesium, calcium); ammonium and alkanolamines (for example, momo, di and tri ethanolamines). In one embodiment of the present invention, the lotion comprises a silicone copolyol sulfosuccinate selected from the group coning of disodium sulfosuccinate of dimethicone copolyol and diammonium sulfosuccinate of silicone copolyol. The lotion preferably comprises less than about 1.00 weight percent silicone-based sulfosuccinate. In particular, the lotion may comprise less than about 0.20 weight percent of the silicone-based sulfosuccinate and in one embodiment comprise between about 0.08 and 0.10 weight percent of the silicone-based sulfosuccinate. Preferably, the lotion comprises no more than about 1.00 weight percent total surfactant solids, including silicone-based sulfosuccinate. A suitable silicon copolyol disodium sulfosuccinate is commercially available as MACKANATE DC-30 and MACKANATE DC-50 brands of sulfosuccinate surfactants available from Mclntyre Group. LTD, University Park, Illinois. A suitable silicone copolyol diammonium sulfosuccinate is commercially available as MACKANATE DC-30A from the same supplier. U.S. Patent 4,849,127 issued July 18, 1989 to Maxon is considered part of the present, as a reference for its exposure related to dimethicone copolyol sulfosuccinates.
P1011 The preferred lotion also comprises one or more of the following: an effective amount of a preservative, an effective amount of a humectant, an effective amount of an emollient; an effective amount of a fragrance and an effective amount of a fragrance sulbulizer. In the sense in which it is used in the present, an emollient is a material that softens, soothes, gives elasticity, coats, lubricates or moistens the skin. The term "emollient" includes, in non-exclusive form, conventional lipid materials (eg, fats, waxes), polar lipids (lipids that have been modified hydrophilically to make them more soluble in water), silicones, hydrocarbons and other solvent materials. The emollients useful in the present invention may be petroleum based, fatty acid esters, alkyl ethoxylated esters, ethoxylated fatty acid esters, fatty alcohols, mucopolysaccharides and mixtures thereof. Moisturizers are hygroscopic materials that work to bring water to the stratum corneum to hydrate the skin. Water can come from the dermis or from the atmosphere. Examples of humectants include glycerin, propylene glycol and phospholipids. Components of fragrances, such as perfumes.
P1011 non-exclusively include water-insoluble oils, including essential oils. Fragrance solubilizers are components that reduce the tendency of the water-insoluble fragrance component to precipitate in the lotion. Examples of fragrance solubilizers include alcohols such as ethanol, isopropanol, benzyl alcohol and phenoxyethanol; any high HLB emulsifier (HLB greater than 13), including, but not limited to, polysorbate; and fairly ethoxylated alcohols and acids. The preservatives prevent the growth of microorganisms in the liquid lotion and / or the substrate. Generally, said preservatives are hydrophobic or hydrophilic organic molecules. Suitable preservatives include, but are not limited to, parabens, such as methyl parabens, propyl parabens, and combinations thereof. The lotion may also comprise an effective amount of a keratolytic that stimulates the healing function of the skin. An especially preferred keratolytic is allantoin ((2,5-dioxo-4-imidazolidinyl) urea), a heterocyclic organic compound having the empirical formula CH6N03. Allantoin is commercially available from Tri-K Industries of Emerson, P1011 New Jersey It is widely accepted that the long-term use of disposable absorbent structures, such as disposable diapers, can lead to skin that is compromised in terms of overhydration. It is generally known that hyperhydrated skin is more susceptible to disorders, These include heat rash, abrasion, pressure marks, and loss of skin barrier For example, 21 CFR 333.503 (Code of Federal Regulations 21) defines diaper rash as a condition of skin inflammation in the diaper area ( perineum, buttocks, lower abdomen and inner part of the thighs) caused by one or more of the following factors: moisture, occlusion, chafing, continuous contact with urine or feces or mechanical or chemical irritation A pre-moistened towel according to the present invention may include an effective amount of allantoin to promote the healing of the skin, for example, of the skin that is overhydrated. U.S. Patent 5,534,265 issued July 9, 1996; U.S. Patent 5,043,155 issued August 27, 1991 and U.S. Patent 5,648,083 issued July 15, 1997 are considered part of the present, as a reference for the purpose of exhibiting additional lotion ingredients. A suitable lotion comprises at least 95 per to weight percent water, between about 0.08 and 0.10 weight percent disodium sulfosuccinate of dimethicone copolyol which can serve as surfactant; between about 0.5 and 5 weight percent of propylene glycol, which can serve as a humectant; between about 0.1 and 1 weight percent of Polysorbate 20, which can serve as an emulsifier to solubilize the components of the fragrance; approximately between 0.01 and 0.5 weight percent of Methylparaben, which can serve as a preservative; approximately between 0.01 and 0.1 weight percent of Propylparaben that can serve as a preservative; approximately between 0.01 and 0.1 weight percent of 2-Bromo-2-Nitropropan-1, 3-Diol which can serve as a preservative and approximately between 0.01 and 1 weight percent of one or more fragrance components. The lotion may also contain between about 0.1 and 3 weight percent of Allantoin and about 0.1 to 10 weight percent of an Aloe extract, such as Aloe vera extract (Aloe Vera), which may serve as an emollient. The aloe extract is available in the form of a concentrated powder from Rita Corporation of Woodstock, 111. The silicone-based sulfosuccinate provides gentle and effective cleaning. It is also believed that silicone-based sulfosuccinate provides P1011 secondary solubilization of the fragrance oils in the aqueous lotion. Without being limited to the theory, it is believed that in typical towel lotions, oil-soluble materials, such as fragrances, can interact with marginally soluble aromatics (preservatives such as methyl and propyl parabens) causing the aromatic compounds to precipitate in the solution. As a consequence, the lotion may be unacceptable for use in a consumer product because of the inadequate preservation of the lotion. Typically, the levels of the fragrance solubilizer are increased to compensate for this problem or additional solubilizers are required. However, without being limited to theory, it is believed that increasing the level of the solubilizer can, in turn, weaken the preservative system. For example, it is believed that a solubilizer, such as polysorbate, can cause the paraben to split into the oil phase of personal use products. As a consequence, these parabens are not available to fulfill their function as conservatives. The present invention avoids these problems because the silicone-based sulfosuccinate provides: a lotion with a lower content of total surfactant solids and less potential irritation, as well as P1011 secondary solubilization of the fragrance component, which reduces the phase separation of the fragrance component and maintains the function of the preservatives. Example 1: A suitable lotion comprising a silicone-based sulfosuccinate can be made according to the following example to give a batch of 500 grams: A first premix (premix A) is prepared by mixing at the same time: 7.50 grams of propylene glycol (liquid ), which serves as a solvent / humectant; 1.15 grams of Methyl / Propyl Paraben (powder), which serves as a preservative. A second premix (premix B) is prepared by mixing at the same time: 1.00 grams of Polysorbate 20 (liquid), which serves as a fragrance solubilizer; 0.19 grams of fragrance oil (liquid). Premix B is then added to 250 grams of deionized water, with stirring. 0.25 grams of Bronopol is then added to this mixture. Bronopol (2-bromo-2-nitropropan-l, 3-diol) (powder) serves as a preservative. Then 1.5 grams of Liquid Mackanate DC 30 (30 weight percent solids) are added to this mixture.
P1011 disodium sulfosuccinate dimethicone copolyol). 2.5 grams of Allantoin solids (powder) are then added to this mixture. Then enough deionized water is added to this mixture q.s. for 100 percent. Premix A is then added to this mixture, with stirring. The lotion made according to the above example comprises about 0.09 weight percent disodium sulfosuccinate of dimethicone copolyol and about 0.5 weight percent of Allantoin. Example 2: A lotion according to this example is made in the manner described in Example 1, with the following modification. Before adding enough deionized water q.s. for 100 percent, 0.0125 grams of a concentrated extract of aloe powder are added to the mixture (concentration 200 to 1). The resulting lotion comprises about 0.5 weight percent of aloe extract.
