A stencil (25, 38) for depositing and portioning variously thick spot layers of a viscous material. Problems with screen process screens made of metal or polyester webs and with metal stencils may be solved using a solid uniform sheet (38) of synthetic material, preferably polyester with no included threads. The solid polyester sheet is mechanically or thermally perforated at desired points. Since it is solid, the polyester web can withstand greater stress than metal wire webs and at least as much stress as metal stencils.
