Abstract
In a telecommunication system having multiple satellites (21-23) communicating with user communication units (5,6) and with terrestrial switching offices (1-3,20) an interruption in a communication link (17) between a satellite (21) and a switching office (1) is detected by a satellite or switching office, and an alternative communication path is established to the affected switching office (1) via a terrestrial communication link (4) to a neighboring switching office (2) until the interruption ceases. The remedial action can occur in response to either predicted or detected interruptions.
