Abstract

The invention refers to a process to prepare 3-hydroxyoxyethanes of Formula I. (See Formula) wherein R9 and R10 are each independently from one another, hydrogen or alkyl from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, by: (1) a carboxylic acid R-CO2II reaction, wherein R is branched alkyl, with an epichlorohydrin of Formula II: (See Formula) wherein R9 and R10 are as defined herein before, to form an ester of formula III: (See Formula) wherein R1, R9 and R10 are as defined herein before, (2) reaction of this ester with an ether of Formula IV: CHR1-CH-O-R2, wherein R1 is hydrogen or methyl, R2 is alkyl from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, or R1 and R2 together form a radical of formula -(CH2)3-, in presence of a catalyst, to form an ester of Formula V: (See Formula) (3) This ester hydrolysis and cycling in presence of a base, to form a compound of Formula VI: (See Formula), wherein R1, R2, R9 and R10 are as defined herein before, (4) acetal cleavage in presence of an acid, to form corresponding 3-hydroxyoxyethane, and (5) this 3-hydroxyoxyethane isolation.
