Abstract

The present invention is related to an improved method to extend the useful life of an inverted osmosis (IO) membrane having a high pressure portion and a low pressure portion, the membrane being used to separate soluble inorganic materials from an aqueous solution. The process comprises the steps of: introducing an aqueous solution containing soluble inorganic materials into the high pressure portion of an inverted osmosis membrane, and pressurizing the aqueous solution upon the high pressure portion to produce a substantially inorganic material-free aqueous solution in the low pressure portion. The solution containing concentrated inorganic materials is transferred from the high pressure portion of the inverted osmosis membrane to a high pressure portion of a microfiltration membrane. The smaller soluble inorganic materials previously transferred to the high pressure portion of the microfiltration membrane are precipitated to provide a solution containing inorganic material particles. The solution in the high pressure portion of the microfiltration membrane is pressurized so as to allow the solution to move through the microfiltration membrane in the direction of the low pressure portion, thereby providing a purified solution which normally only contains highly soluble inorganic materials, which do not precipitate upon the IO membrane. The lower soluble inorganic material particles are concentrated on the high pressure portion of the microfiltration membrane. The concentrated particles of precipitated inorganic materials are finally removed from the high pressure portion of the microfiltration membrane.
