Abstract

The interface of the telephone network determines the destination of a packet received from the routing plotter (140) interpreted by the Frame Relay Protocol, and associates a telephone number with that destination. The interface unit (148) uses the telephone number to establish at least one DSO connection over a digital telephone network (130) to an interface of the destination network (158). A destination network interface unit (158) receives the packet from the digital telephone network (130) and provides the packet to a routing plotter (150) which has an interface with the destination LAN (102). Network interfacial units add or decrease additional DSO channels when required by the traffic load, and thereby provide variable bandwidth.
