Un sistema incluye uno o más equipos submarinos (302, 304) dispuestos en un entorno oceánico (300), y al menos un dispositivo óptico de computación (314) dispuesto en o cerca de dichos uno o más equipos submarinos (302, 304) para monitorear el entorno oceánico. Dicho al menos un dispositivo óptico de computación (314) puede tener al menos un elemento computacional integrado configurado para interactuar ópticamente con el entorno oceánico (300) y de esta manera generar luz interactuada ópticamente. Se puede disponer al menos un detector (212; 420, 424) para recibir la luz interactuada ópticamente y generar una señal de salida (422) que corresponde a una característica del entorno oceánico (300).
