Abstract
Barium sulphate, used as reinforcement, may present morphologies such as fibres, spherical- or doughnut-shaped binders, which depend on the synthesis method used therefor. The large area/volume rate of these reinforcements make the use of small amounts in polymer matrixes be enough for originating a radiopaque material with mechanical properties similar or slightly higher than a polymer without reinforcement. The composite materials thus obtained may be remarkably used as biomaterials for manufacturing catheters, artificial hearts, and in the textile and dye industry.
