Abstract

The present invention relates a process for measuring ammonium in aquaculture farms based on digital image colorimetry. Water quality analysis is routine in multiple industrial sectors, including aquaculture farms. A vitally important parameter to measure in these farms is ammonium (biological waste), as it affects fish mortality. The procedure consists of taking a sample, filtering it, adding three chemical reagents, waiting a few minutes, and using a mobile device to run an application that captures the image (photo) of the sample, performs the color estimation process automatically, and provides the value of the ammonium concentration. Said application has a self-calibration system to keep the reference scale consistent over time. Also, it aims to provide an accessible and friendly option for the aqua culturist since it does not need an expert to carry out the mediation, thus expecting to facilitate the use of the mobile device, decreasing the cost of the mediation process, making it affordable and allowing performing ammonium concentration measurements frequently on an aquaculture farm. Additionally, tests showed that said process can estimate the concentration of ammonium in water with enough precision to determine when the water needs replacement of the aquaculture pond, validating the results by comparing them with spectrophotometer measurements. Further, the present invention achieved measures with a resolution of up to 0.5 ppm in the range of 0.0 ppm to 3.0 ppm, required to monitor water quality that affects the health of fish in a pond.
