Abstract

A camshaft 103 for an engine, configured to be rotationally driven by a synchronous drive 101 coupled to a crankshaft 107 of the engine, the synchronous drive 101 comprising one or more non-circular drive members 105, 109 configured to counteract fluctuations in torque, the camshaft 103 comprising a plurality of cam lobes 115 each configured to actuate a valve of respective cylinders of the engine, wherein the phase angle of each cam lobe 115 and/or the profile (217a, 217b, 217c, Fig. 4) of each cam lobe 203 is independently selected to counteract a change to the valve lift profile of respective valves caused by the one or more non-circular drive members 105, 109. The non-circular drive elements 105, 109 may be any non-round regular or irregular symmetric or asymmetric shape.
