Abstract
The method for estimating the actual size of an object using a camera of a mobile terminal configured with a fixed focal distance involves the following steps (1) setting the focal distance of the camera of the mobile terminal; (2) capturing a sequence of images, moving the camera forwards or backwards the mobile terminal to the desired object; (3) analyzing each image and selecting the most neat image; (4) recognizing the desired object in the selected image and identifying the size (s) of interest of the object; (5) calculating the dimensions of the object in pixels; (6) reading the distance of the lens to the object (stored in the mobile terminal); (7) transforming the pixels into actual units; (8) estimating the actual dimension of the object. If the distance to the object, the focal distance and the size of the image are already known, the actual size of the object may be calculated using the formula of the lenses 1/f=1/do +1/di and the magnification equation M=hi/ho=-di/do.
