Abstract

Described is a method and apparatus for detecting and confirming the presence of a person in any type of chair, applied to wheelchairs, automotive vehicles, trains and plains. The method is based on detecting a sudden change in the resistance of a piezoresistive force sensor (of high impedance) due to the weight of a person or object over the sensor, which may be arranged in the seat or back of a chair. When the sensor experiences a sudden change of resistance, a digital controller is awaken from its low-consumption state, which measures (with the same sensor), through a digital pin configuration and during a specific period of time, the resistance variations of the sensors caused by the breath of the person for confirming or not the presence of the same. The piezoresistive sensor is directly connected to the digital pins of a digital controller without using an active electronic component between the sensor and the controller. In such a way, the signal conditioning interface of the s ensor may be configured by software; in a Standby status, the sensor is configured as a tension divider, and due to the high impedance of the sensor, the power consumption resulting low. In the Measurement status, the interface is configured as a RC circuit for measuring the discharging time of an electronic condenser. The invention may be fixed or portable, and may be operated in an independent manner or be part of a wired or wireless network of sensors.
