Abstract

The invention relates to an associative memory system for saving, recognising and returning contents represented as attribute-value structures, in which said structures are also the indices for directly accessing the memory. The aforementioned contents consist of acoustic or visual images or other information represented as discrete functions with finite domains, or families of finite abstractions or functions. The information is stored in a rectangular grid, in a parametric manner, for attributes with n values. Each state of the grid represents one content or one abstraction and has a unique descriptor and an associated entropy, the definitions of which also form part of the present application. The mechanism is based on the operations of (a) diagrammatic abstraction, in order to record information in the memory, and (b) diagrammatic reduction in order to recognise and/or extract information from the memory, the definitions of which form part of the content of the present applicati on. The invention also includes the logic structure of the memory and its control program. The memory can be simulated in an ordinary digital computer or constructed as an integrated circuit, either as part of a central processing unit or as an independent integrated circuit.
