Abstract

Described is a device for the simultaneous quantification of light and accumulation of sediments in aquatic bodies and the use thereof in studies on marine benthos. The device has a cylinder for collecting the sediments suspended in the water column, so that it acts as a sediment trap. In addition, the invention has an isolated space located at the lower end portion of the cylinder, where a light sensor is arranged. This design allows the sediments inside the trap to be quantified so that determining the rate of sediments and establishing correlations with the light changes as the sediment is being accumulated. The measurement of these two factors, light and sediment, is useful in the explanation of the changes in the structure of the communities of benthic marine organisms.
