Abstract

The present invention consists in a method for the synthesis of nanoparticles of noble metals using an extract of the Rumex hymenosepalus plant, best known as rhubarb. The process for extracting tannins from plants as well as the production of nanoparticles is performed using environmentally friendly chemicals without any heat source; preliminary studies shown that the obtained nanoparticles present cytotoxic effects in certain types of cancer cells, such is the case of silver nanoparticles, which must have a size lower than 5nm for penetrating the cell core, the obtained nanoparticles complying with this characteristic. In addition, the reactants used for this process must remain free of chemicals that can generate adverse cytotoxic effects in cells. The apoptosis phenomenon in cancer cells allows the cells to be destroyed without damaging healthy cells. The use of condensed tannins has a double purpose, since these substances generate apoptosis of cancer cells by themselves, which combined with silver nanoparticles substantially improve the percentage of proliferation of cancer cells.
