Description

BED SKIRT Technical Field of the Invention This invention relates generally to a bed skirt for coupling on the base of a bed.
Background of the Invention The applicant has proposed in the PCT International Patent Application number PCT / AU2005 / 001304 (publication number WO / 2006/024079) a cover device for covering the base unit of a bed assembly. The cover device is configured to cover the end of the head, sides and end of the foot of the base unit and is formed with an opening so that the device can slide over the mattress on the base unit. The cover device has a flange that surrounds the upper part for retention between the mattress and the base unit. An elastic band extending around the flange is provided to hold the flange in position. The cover device can thus be placed on the base unit without having to remove the mattress.
However, the cover device is not suitable for a bed with a joined headboard and / or a raised footboard, or a bed with a metal or wood base frame since it does not fit over these types of bed.
Objectives of the invention An object of the present invention is to alleviate or reduce to a certain level one or more of the disadvantages of the prior art mentioned above.
Compendium of the Invention In one aspect, therefore, the present invention resides in a bed cover device for a bed having a mattress support unit with an upper surface, a lower surface, opposite sides, a head end and an end of the bed. bed foot, and a mattress for positioning on the upper surface of said support unit. The device comprises a configured cover member 2 for positioning to substantially cover the opposite sides, or the opposite sides and said end of the footboard, and a retaining arrangement adapted to retain the cover member on said top surface. The cover member has opposed side panel portions adapted to cover said opposite sides, an upper edge or flange configured to extend inwardly from each of the portions of the side panel, and a lower edge or flange. The upper edge or flange has a bed foot end portion and opposite side portions, said parts being configured to be positioned between the mattress and the support unit and to retain them there by means of coupling with the support unit and the mattress. The retaining arrangement has a first stretchable corner bridge element extending between one of said opposite side portions and the bed end portion, and a second stretchable corner bridge element extending between the other of said opposite side parts and the end part of the foot of the bed. The lower edge or flange is configured to engage the lower surface of the support unit or to extend down to the floor level.
The retaining arrangement may have an element arrangement capable of being stretched on the lower edge or flange to elastically retain said lower edge or flange on the lower surface.
The cover device can be configured to form an opening for the cover member to slide over the mattress and to be positioned around the support unit.
Preferably, the retaining arrangement further includes a third stretchable bridge element that extends between the lateral portions opposite or adjacent said header end. Each of said bridge elements that are susceptible to stretching allows the cover member to be stretched while sliding on the mattress and to be retracted to retain the opposite side portions and an end portion on the top surface. The bridge elements may be in the form of elastic bands or cords.
The bedspread device can thus be used on a mattress support unit with or without a joined headboard, or a footboard end 3 elevated, and can be coupled without the need to remove the mattress or bed. The support unit can be a metal or wooden bed frame, or a whole base.
Stretchable corner bridge elements help keep the sides of the sides and the end part of the foot from slipping out from under the mattress. The bridge element capable of being stretched on or adjacent to the head end helps to maintain the lateral sides without slipping off and under the mattress. The bridge elements lock cooperatively and would adjust automatically after being placed on the mattress and positioned between the mattress and the support unit.
The bedspread device may have attachment corners in respective positions between the opposite side portions and the foot end portion. The connecting corners can be formed of bends or adjusted by means of fastening such as stitches or removable fastening means such as Sailboat or other form of fastening by means of loops and hooks, tacks, etcetera. When fixed, the side portions and the end portions can be pulled to adjust the height of the bottom edge or flange from the floor level. If these are not fixed, the lateral parts and the end part of the foot can be pulled towards the floor level to adjust the height of these. The fastening devices by means of hooks and loops, tacks and similar devices provide height adjustability because the fixing positions of the connecting corners are selective.
The bed cover device can be formed with one or more folds. Preferably, the coverlet device is formed with corner folds and / or side folds and / or one or more folds in its foot end portion.
The folds can be positioned to cover certain parts of the support unit. Accordingly, such bed cover devices can be made of lighter fabric.
The bedspread device may be positioned to have a certain flexibility in its coupling so that it is suitable for use with the base units of set beds of various sizes. The support units may have different depths, or widths or lengths. The cover device can have a width that allows it to be adapted above and below the support unit with a variant amount 4 of cloth complement depending on the depth, width and length of the base unit. The upper and / or lower elastic edges / tabs retain the wrapping device coupled on the base unit of bed sets of various sizes.
Preferably, the cover member has a foot end portion extending from said foot end portion. The foot end portion is adapted to substantially cover said foot end of the mattress support unit. The foot end portion may include an adjustment arrangement to adjust the width thereof. More preferably, the foot end portion is formed with one or more openings each bridged by one or more adjustment means which may be elastic, Sailboat, and so on.
In another aspect, therefore, the present invention resides in a bedspread device for a bed having a mattress support unit with an upper surface, a lower surface, opposite sides, head ends and footboard ends, and a mattress to position itself on the upper surface of said support unit. The device comprises a cover member configured to be positioned to substantially cover the opposite sides, and a retaining arrangement adapted to retain the cover member on said top surface. The cover member has opposite side panel portions adapted to cover said opposite sides, a top edge or tab configured to extend inward from each of said side panel portions, and a bottom edge or flange. The upper flange or flange has opposite side portions, said portions being configured to be positioned between the mattress and the support unit and to be retained therein by means of engagement with the support unit and the mattress. The retaining arrangement has a stretchable head end element that extends between and attaches to said side portions opposite to or adjacent said head end, and a foot end element capable of stretching and extending between and it is fixed to said lateral parts opposite to or adjacent to the foot end. The bottom edge or flange is configured to engage the bottom surface of the support unit or extend down to the floor level.

The elements 38 and 40 will be stretched so that the cover device 10 fits to beds with different widths.
The retaining arrangement for the cover device shown in Figure 3 has an elastic band 30A which extends around the opening 32. The band 30A helps to maintain the side portions 20 and 22 in position on the upper surface 14. The wrapping panel 12 has an upper edge flange 14 and a lower edge flange 16.
The embodiment of the bedspread device 10 shown in Figure 4 is substantially similar to that shown in Figures 1 and 2. The same reference numbers are used for the same or similar characteristics. This device 10 has corner folds 42 and 44 formed in the respective corners between the side panels 14 and 16, and the foot bed end panel 18. The corner pleats 42 and 44 are positioned to accommodate the legs 106 at the end 12 of the footboard.
The embodiment of the cover device 10 shown in FIG. 5 has a bed foot end crease 46, as well as side panel pleats 48 and 50. The pleat cover device 10 may be made of light or heavy fabric. In this embodiment, the legs 106 are hidden behind the folds 42 and 44.
The cover device 10 shown in Figures 1, 2, 4 and 5 has attachment corners 52 formed between each of the side portions 20 and 22 and the end portion 24 of bed. The connecting corners 52 can be fixed by means of stitches or with releasable fastening means such as hook and loop fasteners or tacks. These can simply be folded. When fixed, the connecting corners 52 are held in place, and these can be pulled up when adjusting the level of the lower edge 54 of the side panels 14 and 16, and the footboard end panel 18. . When pulled, more fabric is placed under the mattress 1 18. If they are not fixed, the lower edge 54 can extend towards the ground level.
The cover device 10 uses less fabric than a traditional skirt and is much easier to place on and remove from a mattress support unit. The cover device 10 is made of only one piece of fabric and does not gather. As such, it is less likely to become entangled with the sheets when the bed is made. Also the lack of gathers gives a more contemporary appearance.
While the foregoing has been provided by way of illustrative examples of the present invention, many variations and modifications thereto will be clear to those skilled in the art without departing from the broad scope and scope of the invention as set forth in the following claims. .
