Description
DEVICE AND FORMULATION FOR HAIR
The present invention relates to a device for grooming the hair and a formulation for use therewith.
The present invention concerns the problem of the deposition of a benefit agent, in particular high molecular weight silicone from a hair care device.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a device for grooming hair comprising a head, a nebulizer, a supply of energy accordingly and a reservoir containing a composition to be applied to the hair during use by the nebulizer, the The composition is an emulsified composition wherein the viscosity of the emulsion is less than 8 cSt at 25 ° C.
Preferably, the head is a holder of bristles or teeth, more preferably the device is a comb or brush. Most preferably, it is a brush.
The nebulizer is selected from those known in the art. Preferably, the nebulizer comprises a mist defined by a rigid ring, a reservoir for containing a composition to be nebulized and a circuit connected to the power supply. Such a nebulizer is commercially available from Aerogen®.
Preferably, the mist is convex with respect to the deposit. This improves the movement of the nebulized fluid on the hair during use.
Preferably, the nebulizer is located inside the head and the head also comprises an opening for releasing the nebulized fluid during use on the hair. Preferably, the opening is a hole or slot in the head. In a preferred embodiment, there is a plurality of openings.
Where the device is a brush, it is preferred that the opening be located centrally on the brush head. More preferably, the opening is surrounded by bristles. Where there is more than one opening, preferably they are symmetrically arranged in the brush head to provide uniform release of nebulization.
Where the device is a comb, it is preferred that there be a plurality of openings located uniformly in the comb head.
Preferably, the nebulizer is located in the chamber in the device and the camera is connected to the outside by a channel.
Preferably, the device comprises a handle which houses the energy source. Alternatively, the power source could be separated and the device energized through the power grid.
The benefit agents can be selected from the group consisting of fragrances, silicone oils, waxes, hydrocarbons, major fatty acids, essential oils, styling hair polymers, dyes, hair conditioners, hair cleaners, hair growth promoters , vitamins, hair straighteners, hair growth stimulants, hair growth retardants, hair loss inhibitors, antibacterial compounds, anti-fungal compounds, anti-inflammatory compounds, anti-pruritic agents, sebum suppressants, sunblocks and mixtures of the same.
A particularly preferred benefit agent is silicone. Suitable silicones include polydiorganosiloxanes, in particular polydimethylsiloxanes, which have the designation CTFA dimethicone. Also particularly suitable for use in compositions of the invention are the polydimethyl siloxanes having hydroxyl end groups, which have the designation CTFA dimethiconol.
The viscosity of the emus silicon itself (not the emulsion or the final hair conditioning composition) is preferably at least 1,000 cSt (5 ° C). The viscosity of the silicone itself is preferably at least 60,000 cSt (25 ° C), most preferably at least 500,000 cSt (25 ° C), ideally at least 900,000 cSt (25 ° C). Preferably, the viscosity does not exceed 3M cST (25 ° C).
The silicones emulsified for use in the invention will normally have an average silicone particle size (D50) in the composition of less than 1000 nm, preferably less than 800 nm, more preferably less than 700 nm, ideally it varies from 1 00 to 800 nm, more preferably from 150 nm to 600 nm.
Silicone emulsions suitable for use in compositions of the invention are available from silicone suppliers, such as silicones from Dow Corning and GE. The use of such pre-formed silicone emulsions is preferred for ease of processing and control of silicone particle size. Such pre-formed silicone emulsions will typically further comprise a suitable emulsifier, such as an anionic or nonionic emulsifier, or mixture thereof, and can be prepared by a chemical emulsification process, such as emulsion polymerization, or by mechanical emulsification. using a high cut mixer.
Examples of suitable pre-formed silicone emulsions include emulsions DC2-1766, DC-1785, DDC-1788, DC2-1865 and DC2-1870, all available from Dow Corning. These are all dimethiconol emulsions / microemulsions. Preferred silicones are DC5-7051, particularly preferred are DC1788 and DC1785.
Mixtures of any of the silicone emulsions described above can also be used.
The silicone level is preferably present from 0.1 to
40% by weight of the total composition, more preferably from 0.5 to 35% by weight, especially from 1 to 30% by weight. The level of silicone that can be deposited is dependent on the silicone used.
The compositions for use with the invention suitably comprise a carrier. Preferably, this carrier is water.
Preferably, the carrier levels in the total composition are above 60% by weight of the total composition, more preferably above 70% by weight, most preferably above 80% by weight.
The viscosity of the final composition is preferably from 1 cSt to 8 cSt at 25 ° C, more preferably from 2 cSt to 7.5 cSt (25 ° C), most preferably have a viscosity above 3.5M cSt (25 ° C) . When a silicone emulsion is nebulized, it is found that more silicone can be deposited at higher composition viscosities than if a silicone solution is used.
It is preferred if the products are left on the hair after application and not washed immediately (within 10 minutes of application). Such products are known as compositions that are left on.
The pH of the formulation is preferably from 2.5 to 6 at 25 ° C. More preferably, from 3 to 5.
Examples of suitable emulsifying agents include nonionic, cationic, anionic surfactants, or mixtures thereof. If such an emulsifying agent is used, it is preferably present at a level from about 0.01% to about 7.5% by weight based on the total weight of the composition.
The invention will now be described with reference to the following non-limiting drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a schematic section of a brush according to the invention and Figures 2a, b and c are plan views of a brush according to the invention.
In detail, Figure 1 shows a brush head 1 connected to a handle 2, which houses an energy supply 3. The head 1 houses a nebulizer 10, which consists of a support 5 for a mist 7 and a deposit 6 containing a composition for hair care. The brush head 1 also has bristles 8 depending on it and an opening 9 in the head 1 for releasing the nebulized composition for hair care.
Fig. 2 shows three embodiments of openings according to the invention. Figure 2a shows a brush head 1 with an opening 9, which runs centrally down the brush head and is surrounded on all sides by bristles 8. In Figure 2b, there are three separate openings uniformly and perpendicular to the General longitudinal axis of the brush (not shown). In Figure 2c, there are six openings arranged in two lines of three diamond-shaped openings.
The following are non-limiting examples according to the invention.
Approximately, 1 g of each aqueous emulsion was nebulized in a sealed container of known weight. The water was evaporated from the container and the amount of nebulized silicone was measured by reweighing the container.
The standard error of this experiment was calculated, which is equivalent to the error in the deposited value, which is 0.0014 g.
conclusively that there is no loss of transport of silicone with emulsions of the invention.
DC5-7051 (2% by weight in water) and DC200 350cSt in isododecane were applied using a nebulizer to TA braids of 2.5 g of dry hair, which were left flat. A sample of X-ray fluorescence was taken from the center of the braid and the silicone level was measured.
Material DC5-7051 2% DC200 350cSt 0.5%
Expected (ppm) 700 1 500
Delivered (ppm) 752 ± 272 550 ± 156
% expected 1 07% ± 36 37% ± 28
The above data show that the emulsion DC5-7051 at 2% exhibits better deposition (in relation to the expected value) than a solution of 0.5% DC200 in isododecane.
